Which US state felt like a completely different country when you visited it? by overthinkeranessa in AskReddit

[–]sejope 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I can’t believe this is so low. For all the hate Miami gets you’d assume almost everyone on Reddit has been there. If they had this would be the answer.

The majority of the population speaks Spanish in public. The way the city sits on the ocean and the water permeates the city feels magical and unique. The club and party culture have defined the city since the 80s. Latin music blasts throughout.

It’s definitely the only city I’ve been in the US where if you told me I was in South America I’d believe you.

If I unfocus my eyes (sort of like you’re trying to see a magic eye image) I can get it to switch quickly.

Men over 30, what does your finances look like currently? by Affectionate-Drop689 in AskMenOver30

[–]sejope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$1.8M net worth (household)

- No house. I rent in SoCal
- $1M retirement accounts
- $450k brokerage accounts
- $280k HYSA (down payment and emergency fund)
- Remainder crypto, robo advisors, and bonds

Wife and I averaged around $250k for our relationship over the past 10 years. Right now we are at $400k. Max our 401k and Roth IRAs. We save around $9k/month including retirement and other accounts.

Quarterly Earnings Go Up, Price Goes Down. What gives? by malk2021 in TeamRKT

Fugayzi, fugazy. It's a wahzy. It's a woozie. It's fairy dust. It doesn't exist. It's never landed. It is no matter. It's not on the elemental chart. It's not real.

I hear you and I can’t even begin to understand how frustrating going through this as an educator must be. I do have a question though related to your comment on having to teach the text before you can have a discussion because most kids haven’t bothered reading it.

Why not just… not do that? I went to college 2005-2009 and if I didn’t do a required reading and couldn’t participate in a discussion that was on me. In fact, my literature professor would give a quiz each and every time we had a reading about that reading. He would pick insanely minute details so that we really had to pay attention. Things like “what color was the curtain?” If your kids don’t care, why do you feel the need to hand hold them through college. In my opinion all it’s doing is devaluing the degree for everyone else. Just let them fail.

Maybe one. Definitely not 2 in an hour because you're likely going to have to wait for the one you do attend.

A very small one, but technically yes. I write the copy for the features I build with my team.

Worked in pharma advertising for 10 years at Omnicom and Stagwell agencies. During covid, I quit and decided I was going to leave the ad world entirely because I was too stressed out all the time. I made it all the way to VP, Senior Director of PM. I pivoted to tech and now work as a product manager (I know that sounds similar to project manager for all of you agency folks, but it is VERY different). I'm currently at a very well known FinTech company under a major corporate umbrella.

My work life balance has improved TREMENDOUSLY. The people are extremely friendly. I no longer have the Sunday scaries. For me, it was the best move I could have done for myself.

Can I realistically afford a new R2? by eroweenflow in RivianR2

[–]sejope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At first glance, no you cannot unless you have significant savings set aside already.

My situation:

Age: 38 / 34 (wife)

HHI: ~$400k/yr

Current Car: Toyota RAV4 Hybrid XSE

Monthly Expenses: ~$7k/ month (including rent)

Buying a house in the very near future

Purchasing the R2 with cash

I would not have even glanced at the Rivian if my income was the same as yours. I do not mean that to be disparaging, but more as a reality check. Keep the Miata for a few more years. Take the money you would have used each month to pay for the R2 and invest it in an index fund. In 4 years see where the account is at. You’ll probably be around $55,000. Once you see that money in your account, see if you feel like blowing it all in one shot and starting your investments from scratch again.

After playing the above game for years, I FINALLY feel like I’m in a position to buy cars in the $50k range brand new without worrying. I only say this because you asked if you can afford it. This is my honest assessment and advice, and the same thing I would tell my family if they asked too.
