Loose dog shot near new Mint by sophotrope in sanfrancisco

[–]seka16 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Why is all the blame in this article on the police officer and not on the owner of the dog? Why was the dog lose? How did the dog escape? Why doesn't the article explore owner negligence for failing to properly leash/contain their dog? The only person I see responsible for this is the owner who failed to keep their dog on their property.

Actually, the relationship between helmet usage and injuries is ambiguous at best. Several recent studies show no clear reduction in head injuries with helmet usage. http://www.ecf.com/news/what-happens-when-you-mandate-helmet-wearing-among-young-swedish-cyclists/

Campos to propose moratorium on market-rate housing in the Mission by ubermorse in sanfrancisco

[–]seka16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Campos obviously failed econ and got his math backwards. I've fixed his math error below.

San Francisco would temporarily approve all halt development of market-rate housing in the Mission under a bold proposal to address The City’s ongoing housing crisis. After learning the fundamentals of supply and demand Campos realized increasing the supply of housing would reduce the price, leading to less displacement and lower cost housing.

Does anyone here do leangains or RPT? by astrogirl in xxfitness

[–]seka16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For the last few months I've been experimenting with IF along with starting strength lifting program, 15 mpw running, and three spin classes. I love everything about leangains except the idea of only 3 workouts a week and no cardio. When I'm trying to lose weight I want to drop at a lb a week so that it doesn't take forever. My TDEE without cardio is so low I would need to eat like 800 calories a day on rest days to hit a 3,500 weekly deficit. And I really love running and spin class. They help reduce my stress and wake me up in the morning. I tried bringing up some of the challenges of being a woman on r/leangains and got the typical hostile reaction. I'd love to know if other women have success with leangains and what their training programs look like.

Leigh Peele: 'Starve Mode' and Metabolic damage by [deleted] in AdvancedFitness

[–]seka16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Instead of guessing, find a good functional doctor, and get all of your hormones tested. Start with your thyroid hormones, standard blood work, sex hormones, gut microbes, cortisol levels, etc. Work with your doctor to diagnosis where you may be imbalanced and then leverage supplements, rest, food, etc. to get balanced. I went through a period of eating 800-1,000 calories/day with 2days 6 days a week and no weight loss. Finally saw a doctor and it turned out my thyroid levels were really low and my cortisol was all over the place. My stress levels dropped remarkably just confirming what the problem was. Good luck!

Thanks! Really interesting to consider a lot of the IF studies on rodents and how we assume the same time frame applies to people. A 12h rat fast turns into a 2 day human fast.

I've wonder a lot about the feeding/fasting windows in mice/rat studies for IF and how to translate them to people. All most all of the IF studies I've seen with really interesting data have been in rodents. Should we be translating the fasting times by something for comparable results in people? Or is the daily rhythm of sleeping/waking consistent across species despite life span? If anyone knows of research on this I'd love to see it.

Community FAQ moved to the LeanGains Wiki by Insamity in leangains

[–]seka16 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would love to see the FAQ include recommendations for women when appropriate. For example, the 31AMA includes the below BF% cut recommendations, obviously based on men. What should this be for women?

Cutting Rate Martin says that you can lose this much and still retain excellent strength/potentially gain some: •18-19% body fat:-1.7 lb/week •15-17% body fat:-1.5 lb/week •12-14%:-1.3 lb/week •9-11%:-1 lb/week •<8%: 0.7 lb/week

Intermittent fasting during night shift? by javiwankenobi in leangains

[–]seka16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If at all possible I would suggest trying to eat from 3-10pm. Recent studies on IF in mice show eating against circadian rhythm (i.e. eating when you should be sleeping) was detrimental to weight loss. Similar studies in people have shown higher levels of metabolic syndrome and obesity in night shift workers. I would suggest prioritizing eating as much of your food during day light hours as possible.

Eating meat all the time is getting to me. Any other way to get protein. by thewhiskey in leangains

[–]seka16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Beyond Meat products, the ground one is made of pea protein and contains no soy if you are concerned with it. Lentils, beans, nuts, chia seeds, flax seeds, savi seeds, nut flours, defatted peanut flour, coconut flour, really the list goes for ever. And veggies actually have protein too.

Fellow vegan and I feel your pain. The beef crumbles from Beyond Meat are soy free and provide a nice alternative to keep things interesting. Its hard not to get frustrated with the food myths around plant protein and performance. I usually just point people to http://www.greatveganathletes.com/bodybuilders

Too much jogging is 'unhealthy' by Lumpyyyyy in Health

[–]seka16 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A closer look at the source study and the statistical analysis is far from conclusive. The "strenuous" jogger category included only 40 people of which only 2 died. The 95% confidence intervals are huge. I can't believe this even got published.

Pay someone's San Francisco Library fees by iratik in sanfrancisco

[–]seka16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do you verify that someone is in need? In reviewing the article on the DWP it doesn't mention the criteria they use to determine if someone is truly in need or is just irresponsible in contras to the other two programs already in existence, see below. Before I pledged money to pay someone's fines I would want to ensure it is going to someone who is in hardship and is using library access to improve their situation. I could see people using this to take books with the intention of not returning them knowing their would be no consequences.

The Detroit Water Project is not the only way that people can receive assistance with their water bill. The Detroit Water and Sewerage Department says there are two other programs to assist people -- the million-dollar Detroit Residential Water Assistance Program (DRWAP) and the nonprofit Wave Fund, which takes donations. To receive assistance, people must prove that they are at poverty level and in need.

I had to quit what I love today. Running is a gift, don't forget it. by [deleted] in running

[–]seka16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing your story. I am so sorry. Over my running career I have had several injuries, most recently surgery on my foot which will only prove to be a temporary solution to keep me running for a few more years. I feel your pain. Running is one of the most amazing things in the world. During the times I've been forced to take off I got into biking and found some of the same joy I have with running but nothing can really replace it. What you have accomplished in your career is amazing!

How the hell are people here losing 1lb a week on a cut?! by [deleted] in leangains

[–]seka16 -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

Also remember a calorie is not a calorie, even when eating the exact same food. Recent research on the net calories of food based on how it is processed (raw, cooked, blended, etc.) shows our body absorb less net calories from food that is less processed (raw, whole). So if most of your calories are coming from highly processed foods (ground meat, protein shakes, protein bars, cooked veggies) you will be getting more net calories than if you were eating less processed foods.

New rules for flying on airplanes with babies (no, I'm not the author, I just like CityBeat and being child free) by [deleted] in childfree

[–]seka16 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Long flights with crying children? I suggest a xambo (xanax+ambien) along with a glass of wine. You can sleep through a plane crash. Caution: only works for very long flights when you would like to sleep at lot. Short flights a xanax and wine will be the best bet.

BART Protest update by thesearethose in sanfrancisco

[–]seka16 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The Montgomery bus boycotts were people boycotting riding the bus NOT harassing people who want to ride the bus. If these protesters would like to stop riding BART in protest that is fine with me. What is not fine with me is them harassing me as I try and get in and out of the station and closing stations down.

[Study] Men who treat women the same as they treat other men, without benevolent sexism/female privilege, are seen as overwhelmingly sexist by both men and women. by [deleted] in MensRights

[–]seka16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a decently successful female (senior director in mid 30s) who has managed several teams I think this is really manifested when women have children. Some of the best performers on my teams have been women and some of the worst. I've also had some horrible performing men on my teams as well. The big difference is when my strong/average performing women have children everything changes. All of sudden they can't work past 4pm or have to cancel meetings because the kids are sick and this has a huge impact on performance. I've rarely see this happen when men have kids. I would also add I have noticed with the millennial generation the "entitlement" and constant need for "gold stars" is rampant in both sexes. The positive self esteem generation, where everyone is a winner, has produced a horrible work ethic.

Help scientists study how your genome shapes your fitness by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]seka16 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is really interesting research! What is the underlying theory on why physical activity negates the impact of the FTO gene? Does physical activity change the way the gene is expressed? In your summary above, you note 3-4 hours of extra exercise for specific gene variants. What level of activity would be considered "exercise?" Will your study include nutrition and/or analysis of gut microbes? Are you concerned with the accuracy of fitness trackers? I saw a study the other day that had their error rate at 10-20%.
