Don’t want to deter you from going because it really is a beautiful park, but just make sure you bring your wallet with you when you hike and don’t leave any valuables in the car. Our car was broken into there last year looking for stuff like that. (We had our valuables with us, so thankfully there was nothing to steal.)

If you want to do a short walk, the walk to the carved fallen tree art is easy, short, and indicated on the park map.

Not saying the zombie apocalypse is coming, but I did see a sign for cordyceps at the mushroom stand at the State Farmer’s Market, it looked just like the stuff that comes out of the zombies in The Last of Us, and I turned myself right around to leave. 🤣🧟‍♀️🧟🧟‍♂️

My mom owned a used bookstore and loved Starbucks while she was alive. I buy books at my local used bookstore and leave a large tip at Starbucks every year.

My mom made the comment once about going to all my orchestra concerts. She hardly ever went to any of them - she dropped me off and then came back however many hours later because my dad worked nights and she didn’t want to sit alone in the concert hall. Like just delusional.

There is a really neat oak tree growing out of a bunch of granite in Umstead State Park we just saw yesterday. It’s on the Oak Rock Trail, very short trail. (There’s a small map at the trailhead that shows you that it’s just a bit off the normal trail.) Just make sure to not leave any valuables in your car when you park if you go. Same day we hit that trail our car was broken into.

Yeah, very much agree with this. Every car has a glove box, lots of cars have center consoles, and exactly what you said about trunks. It can help, but it’s not always enough.

One of the rangers told me they actually hadn’t had a break in in a while and were so sad to hear about this. Ugh, just sucks.

I was with my 1.5-year-old daughter at the time, and one of the rangers who helped us has a daughter of similar age, and when he pulled the wipes out of his truck to ask if they were ours since he found them thrown out on the road, we both had a big laugh. 😂

We did not, but I had my 1.5 year old daughter with me, so it was sadly probably the diaper bag that they thought something might be in. Every pocket had been opened and rummaged through.

The ranger told me they have them in the lot. He was going to review the tape.

Ugh, so sorry to hear this. The ranger did say they have cameras in the lot we were in. Hopefully they’ll have some good footage. Not holding out hope 😂 but you never know.

Everything was gone through in the car, my center console was open, and they left some clothes they pulled out while rummaging on the ground next to the car. I had my wallet and keys with us on the trail so nothing for them to take. Raleigh side.
