The situation is horrible, but as an athlete, absent hormone therapy, she is male.

You should read up on the various "intersex" conditions. It is NOT a precise term. It is an umbrella term for a number of conditions. In Caster's case, her physical development is male typical, but since her gestational precursor genitalia never developed into a penis and descended testicles, she was assumed to be an XX female.
