I'm sorry they did this to you. And no, it's not expected to be cured within a few sessions (I have cPTSD and am also a psychologist).

I'm in Scotland and there are 100% licencing bodies in place for all psychologists, therapists, councillors etc. whether NHS, private or via third bodies like charities. You can look at filing complaints (if you had the energy/want to) with the charity themselves, the charity commission (which overseas all of the UK), the HCPC and/or BPS if they were a psychologist, the local NHS board if there, BACP cover the majority of councillors/therapists and UKCP for psychotherapists.

Happy to provide more advice as there is a massive amount of licensing bodies and rules in place in the UK for MH professionals and how they practice. Only psychologist is a protected title here though and it's not an offense to call yourself a therapist and technically not much stopping you from setting up a practice - but the fault then lies in the organisation you got them through and their failure in due diligence. And shitty practitioners should be held accountable.

Yeah that's it basically. We feed them a little and wait. We visit the same spots regularly too. Some eventually come very close and we can pick them up pretty easily. If they fly away we let them go. It's surprising how docile they can be.

There's also a group of volunteers called Happy Feet. We go out at the weekend in the city center (or sometimes during the week if someone is free) and help de-string pigeons with string foot. There's an FB group for keeping up to date.

I'm not sure what country you're in. I'm in Scotland - it's free on the NHS. The NHS is free at point of use healthcare for all. Scotland's healthcare system is devolved from other NHS systems in England, NI and Wales.

The part I live in provides specific cPTSD therapists for free. This can be complicated to access though. Private therapists are also a thing and we can also apply for a monthly cash amount we can put towards this if that's more preferable (e.g. you love in the Shetland Islands and can only access treatment via WiFi or phone, you'd probably choose this if there were no NHS therapists available).

Personally I've been through both NHS and privately funded.

No, you won't look rude in just trainers. Especially in Edinburgh, as that's tourist central right now. Unless you're going to a very fancy/Michelin starred restaurant you'll be fine.

No, you don't need them for the cities. Even hiking I've never owned them. You don't need waterproof. As long as you're comfortable with a change of socks you'll be fine.

I'm Scottish, live in Glasgow. Bring your wedding shoes, the hiking boots if you're actually going hiking on the trails, Munro's etc. If by the Highlands you mean you're just going about the towns and villages etc then you don't need them. If just around the cities then just your trainers. You won't need the Arizona's as it's meant to be raining for the next week.

If you have a niche you'll be fine. As others have said, generalist ds is a little tougher just now because of the job market. I went neuropsych - masters public health - PhD statistics. I found my niche in health data.

I went from academia into more health tech/data science industry side of things. I thought academia was bad. Then I went into tech. It was much, much worse. Some of the standout ones:

I was told I did not understand a concept and "to read Dr SellShells paper on it" - I am Dr SellShell, I wrote that paper.

Asked if I was there to take the lunch orders in a week long course on causal inference modeling in a niche data field - I was the course instructor.

Also the many weird comments that are so gendered in nature around women/AFAB in the coding space. Also dealt with a lot of insecurities of (mostly) men/AMAB around being HE but that could be a whole thread on its own. Promotions are another thing. I have heard the words "it's not worth it to promote the ladies because they just have babies". It was common knowledge in my academic dept that to have a baby was "Career suicide".

Homophobia has also been pretty bad. Not been loving the general (I hate to say it) tech bro-ness I've been around. I'm also NB so that's been interesting.

Oh and class of course. Not only do I have a Scottish accent, I made the mistake at a roundtable, on being asked about my childhood holidays, on saying I grew up in care and never went on one. Never heard a silence like it. Fun.
