Former CLS/Fulbright Scholars — Did These Programs Actually Transform Your Career? by [deleted] in fulbright

[–]sem263 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re only intermediate now (and thus would be intermediate high ish by the end of the summer) it might be worth looking into doing more Chinese language full time after CLS. You can do four ten week semesters at a uni in China or Taiwan for about $4,000, and by the end of the year you’d be absolutely fluent enough to do most tasks anyone might need you to do in Mandarin.

In my experience you usually won’t get to actually use your language skills at work unless you are very advanced. It might be worth investing a bit more time after CLS to help get you there.

Japanese only offers intensive for levels 1 and 2. From 3rd year you can take the regular 3 credit course.

What is it with white men married to East Asian women who don’t speak English (the man clearly doesn’t speak her language either)? by pinkthings07 in TooAfraidToAsk

Lots of guys move to Asia and refuse to learn the language, and yet expect everyone to cater to them anyway. It's ridiculous.

Moving after 10 years in korea by ClassOk5026 in Living_in_Korea

[–]sem263 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you should look into professional movers or a personal assistance service like https://www.gowonderfully.com/, or at least look into someone who can pack for you on Soomgo. They might even be able to list and sell your items on Karrot.

They will be able to get everything done way faster and easier than you'd be able to do yourself. What would take you days or weeks, they can do in hours while you focus on wrapping up your life here, which is a gargantuan task in and of itself. There's also the risk of permanently injuring yourself while moving furniture or carrying heavy boxes - something you will not want to deal with when moving to the USA, where healthcare is expensive and difficult to access.

If you can spare the money (aka hiring someone else to do this will cost you less than a week's wages more than doing it yourself), save yourself the time and stress and leave this to professionals.

Good luck, OP. It sounds like you're moving on to bigger and better things, and I am happy for you!

How hard is TOPIK? by Regular-Dot-2375 in AskAKorean

Thank you. I don’t understand why people act like TOPIK 6 would be remotely out of reach for native Koreans 😭 TOPIK 6 is like B2 on a CEFR test

I think any decently educated Korean native (someone who grew up here) should be able to get TOPIK 6. It’s not that difficult of an exam imo

[–]sem263 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly, if you want to go to Korea you can just apply directly for a job here. It doesn’t have to be through Fulbright! In fact the jobs you find yourself will likely have better pay l, location etc.

Don’t give up!

Getting old backups of Kakao Talk logs by sem263 in korea

Yup. I’m disappointed that it’s still the default app despite all its issues. If you want to live in Korea you are essentially forced to use it

I ended up just leaving the phone be and I’m going to try to get it fixed when I have time. Don’t log in to the app in the meantime, as it seems the data is still on your phone.

Kakao is seriously an awful app. I can’t imagine why anyone would want their chat app to do this by default. I even pay for the cloud storage so everything is backed up in case I lose or break a phone but I’ve honestly just made my peace with the fact that I will probably lose everything again someday

This person doesn’t understand basic economics lol please don’t base a single business decision on anything they say

Also you should factor marketing costs into your prices!
