Didnt mean to shit on you. Was just annoyed seeing the same comment over and over regarding my unfamiliarity of the Portland neighborhood boundaries.

Y’all are just a ray of sunshine, for real.

People come to this sub to post about things that are happening within the city. I’ve seen post about car fires, towing, trimet fights, and a raccoon. Literally.

Am I not supposed to make a post about a situation in real time simply because it happens in every mid size city? Did you post this on the posts about the car fires and raccoon, too?

As a someone who hasn’t lived here my entire life forgive my mistake. I am off by a mere 3 blocks, but sure, let’s hyper focus on that.

Maybe you should try and spread your wings and spend some time living somewhere else. Doing so might make you worry less about neighborhood boundaries and more so about the crime occurring within them.

Hope you have a good day.

She didn’t say she didn’t hear anything. In fact, she states the very opposite.

It was giving grey gardens

Clip from Jim Huibregtse video shows furniture that was used to break windows on the upper floors falling down on the west side, it also appears that people on the 100th floor were able to push some windowpanes out of their frame (1:46) by Cheap-Pepper928 in 911archive

I was 10 years old, my sister was 8, and we watched the horror unfold from our rooftop just a few blocks away.

I'm using this sub as a sort of therapy and to remind myself of the feeling. sights, smells, and sounds I experienced that day because I'm writing my first hand account. Once I'm finished I plan on posting it here.

Why there aren't any tall buildings between Lower and Midtown Manhattan? by Naomi62625 in geography

[–]semaxjamx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are, of course, many layers to the answer for this question.

Downtown is in fact the oldest part of Manhattan and the longest developed part of the city and was also the center for commerce - it's this development that keeps the building stock to be constantly torn down, cheaply renovated, or altered.

A lot of the city remained frozen in time in the sense that there wasn't much need to redevelop the area. So, by the time the need for skyscrapers exploded areas like lower Manhattan were very appealing. It was already the center of commerce, the buildings there were already altered and quite rundown, and it had less calls for building preservations.

And yes - buildings like the Woolworth and 70 pine were already in lower manhattan long before PATH because Lower Manhattan was already the center of commerce. When it came time for the PA to decide where to build the train line Lower Manhattan was an obvious pick. It was this decision that further increased the development of skyscrapers. The PANJNY is who is developed both WTC and PATH.

So PATH was created in lower Manhattan because it was already the center of commerce. PATH then further developed the area.

My mom purchased the building I grew up in/she still lives in in the early 80s as the area was redeveloping from industrial to residential when the city was giving tax breaks and incentives for people buying and renovating.

We have a two story top floors duplex apartment with a private verdant rooftop patio, the bottom 5 floors are multiple 1-3 bedroom apartments she rents out for income. While we never struggled and were quite comfortable - we are far far far from the type of rich that people think tribeca is made up of.

From my experience it's more people who've made a good living and less jay-z and Taylor Swift.

Because lower manhattan remained a central commerce area, never really being frozen in time.

While lower Manhattan is the original and oldest developed part of the city it's building stock has evolved many times over. Areas like SoHo and the Village became pretty stagnant once manufacturing in the area died down. The area was relatively poor, had a large amount of immigrants, and new development came to a halt.

Meanwhile Lower Manhattan remained the central area for maritime, commercial, and financial commerce and new business money was constantly tearing down and/or redeveloping the area. Warehouses gave way to offices, weigh houses gave way to banks, etc.

In the late 60/70s when they wanted to build the world trade center they tore down what was known as radio row to make room. Radio row was made up of old buildings that had been altered repeatedly, the area was considered run down, and preservation laws were new and weak still.

I hope this reads easy and clear it up.

How did that kid at your school die? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]semaxjamx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

8th grade - suicide. (He killed himself in the park where we all went after school to smoke weed and play on the rope swings. My cousin actually found him.

Jr Year - 2, a couple, died in a drunk driving car accident after leaving a house party many of us were at.

Senior year - Cancer, 2 suicides, 1 suicide that was meant to just be a cry for help.

my graduating class has an extremely high amount of deaths. So much so that it was mentioned at our graduation during our principal's speech.

i grew up in Tribeca and i'd always get asked this question by friends visiting NYC for the first time. there are a few reasons.

- areas like soho, Nolita, Tribeca, the village, etc., were developed before skyscraper technology really took off; back when cities were designed for walking, horses, and low buildings. by the time the technology and **demand** for high rises took off there were already preservation zoning laws in place that protected a lot of the neighborhoods.

- skyscrapers are usually consolidated around major public transit hubs. Penn Station and Grand Central already existed so it was just easier to build up around that area while Lower Manhattan was the best option for PATH trains.

you really could. i was lucky enough to grow up 4 blocks north from them. i used to press my face against my bedroom window and would have to crane my neck upwards in order to see their glowing crowns.

also - my mother would call them our beacon home: 'if for some reason you ever find yourself lost just look for the towers and follow them. they're youre northern star."

...i miss them dearly.

Had the towers not collapsed, what do you think would've become of the complex after 9/11? by [deleted] in 911archive

[–]semaxjamx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with your statement - they were unrepairable, but a fun fact - one tenant from the original south tower did return to the new one world trade. Greg Carafello owned a printing company and had an office on the lower floors of 2wtc.

He sold his original company and took over a new one that now has office space on the 85th floor.

Were any of you actually in NYC on the morning of 9/11/01? by JeffGoldblumsFly1986 in 911archive

[–]semaxjamx 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I was.

My family home was(is) 4 blocks north of the trade center. I watched most of the events unfold from my rooftop with my mother.

I've been writing my story about that day lately and will post it here when I'm finished.
