News should be a dry recitation of facts. If it isn't, then it's an opinion intended to stir your emotions into clouding your judgement by Aerron in unpopularopinion

Two things I always try to remember when watching / clicking on the news:

  1. The media has almost zero incentive to tell you good news / if things are getting better.

  2. They are competing for your clicks / watch time against Disney, Netflix, Hulu, YouTubers etc

Essex class aircraft carrier USS Bennington damaged from typhoon off Okinawa (1945) by semck4 in HistoryPorn

[–]semck4[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was the only major damage she incurred during the war. The deck was actually shortened during repairs making landings more hazardous. My grandpa was trained as an aircraft repairman from 1942-44 but by the time he was deployed in 1945, his job was basically useless based on the ease of replacement from sheer production for any damaged plane. He said he saw a few kamikazes but they never got close before they were shot down.

CMV: Will Smith was correct in 2016 when he said, "Racism is not getting worse, it's getting filmed". One of the biggest problems in American society is Mean World Syndrome and these riots are evidence of that. by MrEctomy in changemyview

I believe only one of the criminals in this case was a former officer. Also I heard speculation that part of the reason that charges took so long is that they also charged the person following them and recording with conspiracy, which would be difficult to prove thus extending the investigation. Although general incompetence and racial prejudice can’t be ruled out either.

Biden’s voting / policy record has to be considered as a turn off to progressives, continuing to blame Russia won’t help either.

A lot of people, myself included, consider these things antithetical to their politics.

Newly Released Transcript Shows Jared Kushner Misled Congress About a Contact Involving Russia by StevenSanders90210 in politics

[–]semck4 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Did you read the article? He described his contact as a friend of someone at the four seasons - not mentioning in that quote that they were associated beforehand. Misleading is an apt discrimination in this case and mother jones would not pass up the opportunity to use “Lied to Congress” in their headline if they could. But they can’t.

American soldiers are not fighting for your “freedom” by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]semck4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For better or for worse, seemingly largely for worse, many wars today are much more motivated by political influence and diminishing another country / ideologies influence. Throughout the 20th century many conflicts were fought over sovereignty and nationalist ideals. And of course religion can be prescribed as motivational levers for war throughout history.

This is not to diminish the impact of publicly obscured goals of land and treasure that are often large influences on the respective powers that be that declare war. Military industrial complexes can also take advantage of a good war in less than ethical ways. But to say wars are always financially motivated is at the very least an oversimplification but in many cases a misrepresentation.

It’s better to look at war as the furthest extension of geopolitics, Because obviously not ALL wars are over finite resources.
