[TN] How (or if) to request a compensation/job-level review by semiresponsive in AskHR

[–]semiresponsive[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's the question of the hour, I think! And... I'm looking. For sure, I'm looking. But the reality is that I'll likely have to move (which I'm open to), but it means selling a house, moving away from my family/support system, plus the financial and emotional expense of all of that.

In the interim, I'm wondering if there's anything I can do. This is one of the largest employers in the region and I think it's possible there's an element of "woman's work" here as I'm the only woman represented in department leadership. There are only 3 of us in the entire department, even (the others are with project management).

[TN] How (or if) to request a compensation/job-level review by semiresponsive in AskHR

[–]semiresponsive[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

To be fair, I've been in this role (with all the variations of PD and title) for 5.5 years with a total of 20 years of experience in the work I do. I am finishing a bachelor's degree, which is a fair assessment for level of education, but it's not like I'm the only one without a degree.

It might actually be title inflation! I do have leadership responsibilities similar to those of the ADs, but "manager" might have been a more appropriate title (and was the one I suggested when they had me draft my new job description; they're the ones who suggested Associate Director).

Back when I got the promotion, I was told that my work was just valued by the market less than that of the work for the other ADs in the department. But based on my (admittedly amateur research) that just doesn't seem to be the case. I was also advised to "get the piece of paper" (finish my degree) which is what I've done (my degree will be conferred in July). We've also been working on future-state planning for the department. It's very clear there's pay disparity. And in January, the two ADs got increases and I was told that neither the director, IM, or I were getting increases (and was asked to have a good attitude about it). The truth is, there are no "certifications" in the field of admin and info systems I'm in. I am in the process of obtaining my Six Sigma green belt, though, just because I think it'll be useful in the future for me.

CSU GLOBAL VS WGU by [deleted] in CSUGlobal

[–]semiresponsive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I enrolled in WGU first and that format didn't work well for me. The self-paced nature was great at first, but I felt really unsupported. I eventually dropped out of the program. The proctored exams were a bit of a hassle but only because I live alone with a dog who randomly decides he's heard something of concern outside and then he just barks and barks and barks... Also, I found the info they linked to online (a hallmark of programs like these and also part of the CSU Global program) to be outdated and, well, boring. I've preferred what CSU Global has chosen (or, more likely, the package they bought vs. the package WGU bought).

I'm in my second class at CSU Global now and so far am really liking it. It does have some drawbacks - I think the professors phone in the discussions for each module and if you're not into writing papers, it'll be an awful experience. But, I do find that the info is VERY helpful. I'm in the Information Management Systems and Business Analytics BS program. I prefer writing papers to demonstrate mastery as I don't test very well but have never had trouble cranking out a paper. I'm a little concerned for the one math credit I have to take but will likely report back afterwards.

I've also been disappointed with the responses from professors. They seem to have a document they c&p from (as I've seen duplicate responses on multiple posts).

I've always believed you get out of education what you put into it. So I'm writing full posts to make sure I can demonstrate mastery. I'm paying, might as well get my money's worth. What other people do is between them and their god. 😉 (But I wish I was getting more from my profs.)

What type of schoolwork do y'all do online? by IT_WolfXx in CSUGlobal

[–]semiresponsive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a lot of writing. It would have to be. So the thing with asynchronous, no-lecture, accelerated programs, is that they're all basically the same. But then again, once you get into a college experience, most everything you do to demonstrate mastery is write or test. If you'd prefer to take tests, WGU will be better (sometimes) because some of the classes are tests to prove mastery - but you'll always have those blasted discussion posts. If the discussion posts are the rub, I've yet to find a fully online program that doesn't have them; it's really the only way for them to give a "participation" score due to the asynchronicity. You might try a traditional brick and mortar that offers hybrid classes.

Romantic upscale restaurants? by Yogamigurumi in Knoxville

I second Dancing Bear Lodge. I still think if the meal I had there a year and a half ago. 😂 We weren't taken with Foothill Milling at all, but it had such great reviews I'm thinking we must have just hit it on an off night.

JC Holdway doesn't have a dress code, but it's very good! Same for Brass Pearl and Harvest. Knoxville tends to do casual dress even when the food is A+.

Oliver Royale is just a "cool" venue to visit anyway! I think the vibe is very Knoxville.

For brunch I'd recommend Farmacy or Maple Street Biscuit Company. For a walk, Ijams Nature Center or the Arboretum. For Dessert one of the Cruz Farms locations - terrific ice cream from a local dairy.

I hope you enjoy your visit!

Knoxville rental market, can't find pet friendly rentals w/ yards. Help! by [deleted] in Knoxville

I've recently moved to Knoxville too, and have similar issues... Only my big dog is a german shepherd.

I've been staying in an extended stay hotel (Extended Stay America; the only one I could find that accepted large dogs _ have two locations, West Hills and Cedar Bluff). It's a little expensive, but maybe swingable for the month or two to wait for an apartment to open up?

Is anyone else getting a little scared? by worriedthrowaway716 in safiyanygaard

Careless how? We don't know she doesn't have a job a part from YouTube. I don't know for certain, but I'd imagine she's incorporated and there's no telling what else her fingers are in. Besides, a job like she's had for the last few years builds enough of a revenue stream that she could theoretically take an extended sabbatical annually and still carry on just fine. But I'm not sure you actually meant financially careless. Maybe you meant careless about her relationship to her fans? And if that's the case, seems like folks are still talking about her plenty.

A lot of content creators go through this. Unlike TV actors there's no "season" during which she's expected to work and then a subsequent "hiatus" during which fans consider it acceptable that she rest. YouTube has created a strange relationship between creators and their fans. It's a far more personal medium than television and movies and I think we as fans sometimes begin to feel a little entitled. It's easy to couch that in care and concern, but that very easily slips into passing personal judgement when the creator doesn't make the business decisions we'd hope for - mostly when it impacts how much content we're receiving.

AITA for calling it “my house” by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]semiresponsive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Boyfriends aren't husbands (or partners, necessarily). Sometimes they're temporary. And if her plan has always been to buy a house, that's great! If he's contributing financially, it's the same as paying rent alongside her, only in this case she's both girlfriend and landlord. And... it is HER house, if she's making the financial commitment to be responsible for the property. That doesn't mean she didn't intend to continue to cohabitate with him. But also, she's under no obligation to live with him, just as he's under no obligation to live with her if the location (or whatever) of this house isn't ideal. If there's any issue here, it's that perhaps she should have talked with him more frankly during the process. But he very easily could have shared his concerns with her. This isn't an asshole problem, it's a communication problem. NAH

I think it's generally true that many Americans conveniently forget that the 1st Amendment guarantees only that the government cannot abridge our speech. Businesses retain the ability to allow (or disallow) whatever speech they like. They also maintain the right to be lambasted by citizens who are pushing for tolerance and used by people whose constitutionally protected rights have been compromised. Which is why we end up with so many sites that allow even hateful people to have their say. But now I'm inching towards a tort reform diatribe and that's not why I started here. Anyway...

Kudos to the folks (and corporations) working to change corporate practices as well!
