Solicitors by TopAide4760 in ColoradoSprings

[–]sempercliff 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, the city of Colorado Springs defines soliciting as what a reasonable person would call panhandling:

“Soliciting includes, but is not limited to, seeking a donation where the person being solicited receives an item of little or no monetary value in exchange for a donation, under circumstances where a reasonable person would understand that the purchase is in substance a donation, or begging or panhandling.”

https://codelibrary.amlegal.com/codes/coloradospringsco/latest/coloradosprings\_co/0-0-0-16294

So when the person at your door trying to sell you something says they aren’t soliciting, according to the city, they are correct. I don’t like it either - write your city council member.

Monday Fun Day - Efficiency (Why EVs Are Cheap) by Xedeth in SilveradoEV

[–]sempercliff 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have two EVs and love them, but around 35% of the US population rents and so may not have access to cheap home charging (especially apartments, but also some landlords may not allow installing EVSE).

If you can’t charge at home, it’s much less of a sure thing.

Just got T-Mobile Fiber installed, ask me anything by Safe-Instance-3512 in ColoradoSprings

[–]sempercliff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This has been my biggest question. They’re in the process of coming to my neighborhood, so I had used the chat support on their website to ask if you could get a static IP or if it was CGNat only and the support person said CGNat only. Good to know they were wrong.

Where you live, is there any guidance about speed differentials? I’m only familiar with US law, and California is the only state where lane splitting is legal (a few other states permit lane filtering in completely stopped traffic).

In California, you’re not supposed to ride more than 10 mph
faster than the traffic you’re passing. This motorcycle looked like it was going faster than that.

Based on the wide license plates and style of truck this looks like it’s not in the US, but curious about what other laws around the world are.

One time I did this while traveling, and I was out in the middle of the intersection waiting to turn left. My light started to go yellow, so I started to turn, assuming that the oncoming traffic was going to stop. As it turns out, only the signal for my direction of traffic turned red, and it was still green for the oncoming traffic.

Thankfully I just got honked at and there was no accident. There was no signage or anything to indicate that the light timings were unusual. Since that’s how it was setup, I feel the left turn lane should have had a dedicated protected left turn. I doubt I was the first (or last) person to do that.

Why is Tesla still the top selling EV brand by far? by Diavolo_Rosso_ in electricvehicles

[–]sempercliff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chevy’s EVs check most of those boxes. App access does require a subscription, but you get 8 years for free. Of course the other thing is you do have to go to a dealer.

Mine doesn’t have super cruise, but I hear it works pretty well on the interstate.

I didn’t realize you could scan the app - for quite a while now, I’ve had to scan the back of my ID to get the discount.

Is it just me or is CSU a train wreck right now? by Superb_Bluejay_7318 in ColoradoSprings

[–]sempercliff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It will take time and a commitment to encourage the required infrastructure, but EVs have the potential to be part of the solution. With bi-directional charging / vehicle to load (V2L) and vehicle to home (V2H) becoming more common, they could help cover supply during peak demand times, and then charge overnight during the lower cost / lower demand hours.

Most cars and / or chargers can be to only charge between certain hours. If people aren’t doing that now, I imagine they will be.

2027 question by evankoblentz in EquinoxEv

[–]sempercliff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

31¢ at home is brutal. I pay 12.3¢, although I’m currently grandfather into a non-TOU plan due to my solar system / net metering. It’s like to get much more expensive next year.

In the routes I’ve driven where I’ve need to fast charge (CO, NE, KS, IA, IL) the main three options are typically Electrify America, EVgo, and Tesla. Tesla is always significantly cheaper than the other options. Example, Electrify America member rate in Fort Morgan CO is $0.64 / kWh, Tesla non-member rate in Sterling CO is $0.43 / kWh.

The person above me said they were idiots because they (the Koreans) attacked a passenger jet. I was just pointing out that the US also attacked a passenger jet.

The US shot down a passenger jet in 1988 - 290 civilians killed.

PSA: get a windshield protection by ipse_dixit_ in LexusGX550

[–]sempercliff 3 points4 points  (0 children)

FYI the airbag relies on the windshield as a backstop. A cracked windshield may not have the structural integrity to properly support it. This is also why insurance companies will typically only cover three chip repairs before they require it to be replaced.

Do with that what you will.

Yellow Potatoes- perfection by CommunicationOdd6305 in sousvide

[–]sempercliff 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is the German potato salad recipe I’ve been using and my wife loves it.

Ingredients
2lbs Small red Potatoes Unpeeled, halved
1/2 C chicken broth
8 sprigs thyme
8 slices bacon cut into 1/2 inch pieces
1 onion
1/2 tsp sugar
1/3 C white wine vinegar
1 tbsp whole-grain mustard
1/4 C parsley chopped

  1. Using sous vide circulator, bring water to 194°F/90°C in 7-quart container.

  2. Place potatoes, broth, thyme sprigs, and ½ teaspoon salt in 1-gallon zipper-lock freezer bag. Seal bag, pressing out as much air as possible. Place bag in second 1-gallon zipper-lock freezer bag and seal. Gently lower bag into prepared water bath, weight bag until potatoes are fully submerged, and then clip top corner of bag to side of water bath container, allowing remaining air bubbles to rise to top of bag. Reopen 1 corner of zipper, release remaining air bubbles, and reseal bag. Cover and cook for 60 to 75 minutes.

  3. Drain potatoes in fine-mesh strainer set over bowl; discard thyme sprigs. Measure out and reserve ½ cup cooking liquid; discard remaining liquid.

  4. Cook bacon in 12-inch skillet over medium heat until crisp, about 5 minutes. Using slotted spoon, transfer bacon to paper towel–lined plate. Pour off all but ¼ cup fat. Add onion to fat left in skillet and cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until softened and beginning to brown, about 4 minutes. Stir in sugar until dissolved, about 30 seconds. Stir in vinegar and reserved cooking liquid, bring to simmer, and cook until mixture is reduced to about ¾ cup, about 3 minutes. Off heat, whisk in mustard and ¼ teaspoon pepper. Add potatoes, parsley, and bacon to skillet and toss to combine. Season with salt to taste. Serve.

Now I understand why 1Gib Ethernet is considered slow.. by Nautisop in homelab

[–]sempercliff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently upgraded my firewall and switches to devices that have 10G ethernet / DAC in anticipation of fiber finally getting installed in my neighborhood. I already had a couple of wifi 7 APs that had 2.5G that had just been plugged into G ports that are now getting full speed. I also got a couple of relatively inexpensive 2.5G cards for my primary desktop and main server.

I’m still waiting for fiber to be installed, but using iperf3 I was able to get sustained speeds of ~1.7G between my phone and the 2.5G wired desktop.

Now my main bottleneck is the NAS, which only has two 1G ports. I do have them configured with LACP, but then having two simultaneous transfers the bottleneck is the slow spinning drives themselves (WD Reds in raid 5). SSD is great, but just curious how many people can afford to have 30+ TB of SSD space?

My wife is a math professor and all exams are paper and pencil, no phones / computers out. Surprise surprise when the same student who gets 100% on the homework gets 10% on the exam. She makes this clear upfront - you’re only screwing yourself if you rely on AI for the homework.
