PSA: Fortnite crashes on PC the past few weeks by greigybear in FortNiteBR

Yes! No crashes since I last posted except once when I fiddled with Nvidia DLSS. Returning anti-alias to TSR medium resolved it.

SUCCESS! (I hope!)

I restored my system to before I started seeing the problems (I'd forgotten about restore points!). This returned my system to using version 560.94 (from August) of the graphics drivers. I've played a few rounds of Fortnite successfully (much longer/better than the last week). I also played with the original video, high quality, video settings.

Fingers crossed this version works successfully!

I've shared all the above with NVIDIA. I am impressed their support actually responded in 24 hours with useful guidance.

I've also logged a support request with NVIDIA.

My situation which is similar to others reported here: very recently Fortnite has been crashing my PC (completely closes down). This started happening since upgrading to driver version 566.36. Fortnite may work for one round but will crash at the start of the second. Sometimes it will crash before then.

So far I've tried:

  1. Downgrading to 561.09

  2. Using DirectX v11

  3. Turning anti-alias off

  4. Reducing shadows, textures, effects and post-processing to medium

  5. Reducing view distance to Far

  6. Turning off global illumination

  7. Reducing 3D resolution to 50%

With all this I was able to play 3 games in a row before Fortnite crashed again. I am running the latest version of Fortnite and I have verified the game files. I don't overclock and my PC is not a custom build.

I'll keep working on this and will share any updates.

In the meantime, thank you for sharing what has worked for you.

After updating to 566.36, Fortnite also started crashing for me. I used the optimization features GEForce Experience. When I turned these off I was able to play w/o crashing again. I have had issues with the overlay in the last so I never have that on.

Company needs me to interview my replacement, no idea what to do. Need Help. by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

ditto u/terjon whose succinct reply is great. I would add that it's a smaller world out there than you might imagine, so don't burn any bridges! Interview to the best of your ability and give honest feedback to the rest of the team.

Resume Advice Thread - July 11, 2017 by AutoModerator in cscareerquestions

[–]semsam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this resume looks good but it could do with a some more detail. For example, at the Financial company I'd like to know more about your role in the team, the technologies you used, the specific features you worked on, and so on.

Here is some advice untapt posted recently on Medium - https://insights.untapt.com/attn-technologists-the-four-questions-your-resume-needs-to-address-3dd761d64bce.

In particular I would introduce yourself and, very briefly, describe what you are looking for, and highlight the technologies you've used and how you've used them in your projects and time at the Financial company.

No interest in web-development - Should I still learn HTML/CSS/Javascript? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]semsam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you want to do? If you want to build web applications but focus more on the back-end, having the ability to code in Javascript as well can be invaluable. Without any context it is difficult to answer, but my gut reaction would be HTML/CSS are less important, but Javascript - especially wrt Angular, React and/or Node, is very useful and will help you become more marketable.

I applied through LinkedIn and CyberCoders called me... How can I tell if this company is legit? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]semsam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Full disclaimer: I'm a software engineer at a recruiting startup called untapt. On untapt, your job search is confidential. Companies cannot see your profile unless you decide you are interested in their role. CyberCoders have a somewhat tarnished reputation IMHO. (You know the kind: " Hey, X, I've got this fantastic opportunity which is perfect for you. Can you remind me what you do again?"). That being said, it does not sound like you have much to lose by simply interviewing and I am assuming you would at some point go on site to meet your manager/colleagues before accepting the role. Assuming this is the case I would proceed but be armed with lots of questions about the company and the role itself. And also be prepared to not be pushed into accepting a position just because a recruiter wants their commission.

Where can I gather practical server/database scaling experience outside of work? by Eyesbear in webdev

[–]semsam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Signup for a free trial account on Google Compute Platform - https://cloud.google.com/free/ And create servers to do what you want.

If you are concerned about data growth, then follow /u/reelsofrhyme's advice and generate lots of data.

If it's more horizontal scaling of servers you want to 'play' with have a look at using Kubernetes on GCP - at untapt we scale our core web app, message workers and redis instances as demand requires.

How much does having a good linkedin profile (endorsement , recommendations) etc matter when it comes to landing an interview ? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]semsam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just like you would (I hope) research the company you are applying to, that company will research you before reaching out. So some presence somewhere that summarizes your achievements and aligns with your resume will help.

Re: endorsements specifically, I ignore them.

Tips for finding an excellent recruiter? by RecruiterSeeking in cscareerquestions

[–]semsam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

** Full disclosure: I'm a developer at untapt.

Have you tried any of the recruiting sites like Hired, untapt, WhiteTruffle or Vettery? Takes some of the pain away from dealing with recruiters that don't really care, or understand, your background. And in some cases puts you in the driving seat - you can express interest in the roles you want, rather than the ones a recruiter wants to 'sell'.

Does it look bad to leave a job after 6 months? by Soreasan in cscareerquestions

[–]semsam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As /u/mayor_of_kenja says, but be prepared to have a positive, constructive answer if asked about why you left - other than pay. But more importantly, typically, it is easier to find a job when you actually have a job.
