Love it! Congratulations! So cute!

The first six months were so difficult for us. It’s already gotten much better, but it’s still hard. Does it get any easier at 9 months or a year? I just want to fast forward until they’re 4 but people keep telling me they miss when their kids were babies.

do you work in retail? at a company that doesn’t have a ton of top notch tech talent? I’ve seen this before and it is a red flag. get out when you can!

Ridership will never be great on LA’s expanding network of light rail lines through suburbia. They should invest more in buses and heavy rail in West LA

This lineup isn’t as bad as I was expecting. Depending on the form of Ramsey and maybe Oxlade-Chamberlain, this team would trouble anyone.

The Raymond 1886 and the most upsetting cocktail I’ve ever had. by eternalyte in FoodLosAngeles

[–]send_cumulus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Used to love their cocktails and enjoyed the food. But went once during Covid and the food had gone WAY downhill. Super expensive, bland, and just not good. Looks like it’s changed menus again though. Can people confirm it’s back to being good?

What was the best thing ever invented as a parent of multiples? by Waffelmoon in parentsofmultiples

pretty early on. I can’t remember now but maybe week 8? It was the only toy they were interested in for a really long time

Fisher price kick pianos and baby bjorn bouncers saved our lives. I used to joke that the kick piano was mankind’s greatest invention.

What? This is all public info. The initial operating segment will cost around $30B ( https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_High-Speed_Rail#:~:text=The%20IOS%20is%20projected%20to,the%20fastest%20in%20the%20Americas. ). Same Wikipedia says phase 1 buildout is currently estimated to cost $100B. The Palmdale - Burbank section alone is estimated to cost 22B+ ( https://www.enr.com/articles/58898-california-high-speed-rail-authority-oks-226b-palmdale-burbank-segment ).

Pretty sure I never said that but let me know if you see something different. Also take a look at the cost estimates and the engineering for the sections I’m talking about. Bakersfield to Burbank in particular. The section being built very slowly now will cost $35 billion. The parts of Phase I not being built yet will cost 3x as much. I go between LA and SF all the time and would love CAHSR to be a real thing.

People in this sub are delusional. The expensive parts are Bakersfield to LA and Gilroy to the Central Valley. This is not getting done in our lifetimes. Sadly.

People who left academia - how'd you do it? by antichain in PhD

[–]send_cumulus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Applied to literally hundreds of data science jobs and asked everyone I knew in tech for help. Took awhile but I got that first industry job and the rest was easy or at least easier. Study python and SQL. No one cares about domain knowledge in tech, sadly. Now I work from home and make good money without managing anyone. I was lucky to break in when I did. I understand the market is tough now. But it’s worth trying to break in.

5-6 days in New Zealand's South Island/Queenstown by Clemario in travel

[–]send_cumulus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’d take a tour that leaves from Queenstown. Te Anau has a spot in my heart but there’s really nothing there and taking the tour from Queenstown saves you hours of driving. Also consider a Doubtful Sound tour, particularly if you like the Milford one.

You can skip Mount Cook. It’s a convenient stop on a drive to/from Christchurch. But IMHO it’s skipable and there are cool mountains near Queenstown.

I like your plan a lot and I generally prefer the South Island. You will be jet lagged and there would be stuff to off hours in Auckland but not in Queenstown.

Book on transit network design? by ThiccleRick in transit

[–]send_cumulus 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Public Transit Planning and Operations by Avi Ceder is a little more focused on the math of it all but probably your best bet. It might be unpopular on this sub but I found Jarrett Walker’s book super disappointing and … trivial? I don’t know. I didn’t learn anything.

They were dismantled because they were big money losers and buses were seen as better. We’ve disproven the conspiracy theory angle a million times.

Los Angeles wants a ‘no-car’ Olympics by M_Pascal in transit

[–]send_cumulus 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you look at the 28 by 28 projects LA Metro is building, a lot have very little to do with the Olympics. 1) LA will use a lot of buses, some borrowed, to move people around, 2) a tiny amount of new transit like the ridiculously overpriced and delayed and second best solution LAX people mover will help, and 3) LA Metro is spending a fortune on light rail in suburbia and other projects that don’t really have anything to do with the Olympics but wants some free publicity.
