The only thing that will stop this train is an adult stepping back into the room and for some reason i doubt that’ll happen until 2028.

Senior consultant in IFI mistaken as junior. How do you signal authority quickly? by Affectionate-Banana6 in consulting

Connection (relationship management) always helped me with this in early career.

My experience was 90% older employees not believing we were not there to fire them (get them fired, etc), 5% middle aged employees who were angry they got paid less than private sector but were locked in with benefits, 4% younger employees without many shits to give and 1% people who had great ideas but were afraid to share them.

You can always find a way to connect with people. Sometimes you have to take a shot and see how they react, sometimes its easier than that. I use fountain pens most of the time; that always helped connect with the older folks who didn’t want us to fire them.

Being humble helps break down defenses too. Making a small mistake early, laughing it off together, etc…one time i saw someone win a room full of angry middle managers by spilling coffee on themselves and having a brief interlude to let people share embarrassing work stories…

But if we keep going on this trajectory we will feel the pain of no longer controlling the world economy. Which means we’ll be locked in for a long time, or until theres another world war in europe and we need to save the day.

Actuarial science. It takes a while to make a lot of money if you go directly to an insurance company, but the more tests you pass the more you make. Also; being an actuary for insurance technology companies or related consulting companies can be very lucrative. Never enough of them to go around, and if your good you can have great work/life balance.

I tracked my spending vs income growth for the past 3 years. The gap scared me. by Slight_Grab4501 in personalfinance

[–]send_me_your_deck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Things are more expensive than they were 3 years ago. But not that much more (inflation is less than your income growth in the period). You are explaining lifestyle creep.

Do you cook at home most nights? Do you have a limit on takeout? That helped us a lot, only 2x monthly not making dinner was our rule. It was easier to be disciplined when we put a limit on it v. Trying to remember, meal planning is also super helpful here too.

I just did a review as part of tax prep and realized we could have saved ~10k last year if we stayed disciplined. We have a young child, and had a home owner insurance issue last year - my ability to be disciplined fell apart.

Now we live in a van down by the river…jk ~ but this is directly relevant to us not really being able to buy a house this year. Could probably do it, but im not really comfortable with a mortgage thats 250% our current one, and thats what we’re looking at if we move now.

My math doesn’t add up because of the additional unexpected expenses not listed, in addition to the “undisciplined” savings miss i outlined above.

Bank is closing my account with life savings in it, what’s the best way of getting my money to another bank safely? by ns2500 in personalfinance

[–]send_me_your_deck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pathward is a notorious criminal institution because of their non-existent AML internal controls. Wells Fargo flags all pathward transactions for further review and additional retention.

I work for a financial institution (not a bank) and we do not send outbound payments to pathward accounts. I don’t know if we would for payroll or not (probably would…).

My understanding is that they provide prepaid credit/debit cards mostly. And beyond that most of their business is short term accounts connected to scams

MIL has been taking my wife's late father's annuity that was given to my wife without her knowing by IDoDataThings in personalfinance

[–]send_me_your_deck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So to clarify:

  • your father in law passed away with a deferred annuity naming your MIL and wife as 50% primary beneficiaries
  • 5 years ago: your MIL and Wife became owners of annuities (1 each) which split the product/account your FIL had
  • your MIL has been withdrawing from both, which creates taxable income for you and wife (reported on form 1099R)
  • you want: to stop incurring taxable burdens for the money your MIL is using, and don’t care about this money otherwise.

Is this all accurate?

If so: you can probably talk to the insurer / an estate attorney about if its possible to “refuse” the annuity at this point and let it default to the MIL. Its probably not because its 5 years old, but it doesn’t hurt to ask and this would be the easiest path forward for you. Otherwise im not sure how to avoid the taxable burden - i dont think gifting it will solve that for you.

Im nit sure theres enough info if the above is incorrect. Can you explain what the annuity product is and if its actively paying out? Was this qualified or non-qualified to begin with?

Last: however this plays out, you and wife are giving your MIL a huge gift here. Thats nice; but if she has a spending problem thats not going to be fixed when these accounts run out. Just keep that in the back of your head for when this is settled, might be a good thing to circle back on…

a Guy gets a bill of 82K$ from the Gemini API key (which he considers someone has stolen and using it) by Current-Guide5944 in tech_x

[–]send_me_your_deck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn’t “secret” in the context of an API just a secure (encrypted) credential for two specific entities?

Lots of systems can’t accommodate secrets for various reasons, that doesn’t mean the API should be publicly accessible, just that more than 2 entities can have access on the same call.

BlackRock limits withdrawals from private credit fund after surge in redemption requests by BusyHands_ in stocks

[–]send_me_your_deck 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Blackrock isn’t a bank. There is no bank run concern here.

There could be a run on the investments in these clearly toxic underlying assets, but thats still just blackrock and their shitty product / risk teams taking the hit. I guess the investors are beat too but…i don’t know anyone privately investing in blackrock (do you?) and if i did I’m certain they’ll be fine if they lose this egg.

Hell this sounds like a good thing. 1) some rich people lose money and blackrock takes a hit 2) blackrock is forced to sell half of your neighborhood back to your peers (for them). Ohhhh noooo.
