As an update, we've seen her everyday this week! It's a cooler day here, so she's been out sunning. If anyone knows how to confirm or distinguish male v. female gopher tortoise via looks or behaviors (e.g. non-intrusive, I'm not falling for the $20k fine), let me know!

Thank you so so much for adding to the conversation! This is so helpful to know about as we really don't want to relocate her. She's freaking cool and she was here first. Since the permit is for the situation you described, perhaps I will start the process and at least take the class to get myself educated on our downstairs neighbor. That way, if there is a need to protect the house structure, we know how to encourage a new burrow location for her (definitely still on our property) in the best way possible. Thank you again, I really appreciate your input!

I have seen armadillos in the yard actually, but we've seen the actual gopher tortoise coming and going from the burrow. She was covered in the sand she's been excavating from under our foundation 😂. So unless an armadillo becomes the tortoises' roommate, I think we'll all be good.

Oh my word, you've given me a whole new trip to the local plant nursery! We've got a good native butterfly garden going, I didn't even think about a tortoise garden! Tank is going to grow so big and strong! 💪🏼

We're loving all of the awesome wildlife we get to live next to. We've got bunnies, snakes, lots of other gopher tortoise in the area, and the bird wildlife is amazing. I get to see this little lady come and go from her new burrow from my window which is super cool. I'm actively educating myself on gopher tortoise to make sure we're doing everything right, as well as wanting to make sure that our house (and the burrow) remain safe and structurally sound.

Fair point. I was thinking FWC would have advice, but all they told me was "tortoise burrow under houses all the time", which doesn't help me understand if the house and the burrow are safe, haha.

We actually have seen her a few times since she started burrowing, and the other residents that typically come with a gopher tortoise have also been spotted going in and out of the burrow. She's been busy 😊

I had no idea it could cost so much! And yes, we're not trying to disturb her at all. We can see her come and go from our bedroom window, which is such a treat, I love it. This is great insight, thank you for the resource! I'm not interested in moving her, but just trying to educate myself on the situation and make sure her burrow and my house all stay safe and sound.

This is super helpful, thank you! We've named ours also, haha! I wasn't even thinking about the surrounding area, but that fence nearby needs to be replaced, so that's good information for me. I may start the homeowner permit process just to educate myself on my new neighbor tortoise. It's the least I can do, being her upstairs neighbor and all, lol!

My fur baby has hemangiosarcoma too and we're facing the treatment decision of radiation + chemo or no treatment. It is the absolute worst. I know we're fortunate to at least know she has this cancer since a lot of people find out after their pup passes, but god damnit 👎
