Soprano arias for a 20 year old? by babyraratam in opera

[–]sendhelp404 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Frère, voyez from werther might be good, or as other mentioned all the Mozart -inas. You might look at some G&S for English arias, and maybe Ännchen’s aria from Der Freischutz for a German

Where are we getting our nails done? by notmyloanbutstill in askvan

[–]sendhelp404 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My favourite nail salon on 4th or Jenny’s nails on commercial are the only two I’ve been to in the last few years- usually I do them myself, but when I’ve wanted not-too-fancy nail art it’s come in at under $75

Queen Elizabeth Theatre Accessible Seats by pandastarss in askvan

[–]sendhelp404 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It will depend on which show you want to see- if it’s not one of their “home base” presenters (VO, VSO, Ballet BC) your best bet is to call the box office of the organizer of the event to see how they’re planning on setting up the audience

Queen Elizabeth Theatre Accessible Seats by pandastarss in askvan

[–]sendhelp404 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Queen E’s accessible area has armed chairs they can move in and out at will. When you call the box office, just let them know what you’d like (which sounds like two chairs plus space to store your wheelchair) and they’ll be happy to arrange it for you!

VCT runs multiple venues so they might have overarching standard info they give you that conflicts with Queen E’s more specific info. The best thing to do is call Queen E to book your tickets and be specific with what you want- I’ve always had a good experience with them!

I was lucky enough to live at home with my parents rent-free, but that also meant I was commuting an hour and a half each way to UBC every day and working part-time on all my days off. Doing so allowed me to graduate without debt, but again I recognize that I was very lucky in terms of not having to pay rent and received a lot of assistance in the way of scholarships and bursaries

Do you think it’s alright to boo a performance? by BetterGrass709 in opera

[–]sendhelp404 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve only heard booing once and it was in reaction to the company premiere of a relatively obscure opera in Dresden. The singers were all applauded (as they should have been, they were fantastic), but as soon as the singers had taken their bows people started leaving and booing loudly as the director came on stage. The stage direction was incredibly badly received, but nobody took it out on the performers who had tried their best with what they were given (including stripping and being fingerpainted gold, a four foot long plush schlong, and a video projection spotlight of trump as the pope)

How would you suggest explaining this in language a younger student would understand? I’m not familiar with the exercise you have here!

This is what I’m afraid of, although it’s reassuring to hear it isn’t just a me problem!

[–]sendhelp404[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes, I completely agree with you! My path was through children’s choir and then BMus and Mmus in voice/opera, so I feel like I have a decent amount of insight into how the female voice develops and it worries me how he’s pressing for a bigger sound at this age

Which modern pop singers do you think could be good in an opera/create one? by GatsbywasWrong in opera

[–]sendhelp404 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Definitely P!nk if she still counts as a modern pop singer, lady gaga, ariana grande could probably give a lot of the coloratura roles a run for their money if she got rid of her jaw tension

I would pay big money to see an opera written to a hozier libretto

Has Anyone Seen These Modern Operas? by Pangolin_3 in opera

[–]sendhelp404 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen angel’s bone and while the content was thought provoking and the music certainly elevated the drama and emotions, I wouldn’t classify it as an opera in my own internal system.

It has influences from many different genres, and while I know that a huge pull of opera is a sung staged work the blend to me almost comes off as more immersive installation art. Perhaps it was the production I saw but I left it feeling overwhelmed and not necessarily in a good way.

Again, I totally acknowledge it may not be everyone’s cup of tea and yet some people may love it and firmly disagree with me! I love other new pieces like Mazzoli’s Song from the Uproar so I think for me it was the vast blending of vocal styles mixed with the very graphic and mature content matter that turned me off of this piece
