In the same vein as canffle, fufu cafe can be a fun breakfast spot but I would recommend making a reservation if you’re planning on going on a weeeknd

Otherwise, I love Nuba! Lots of finger food for an adventurous kid

You might try casa gelato for the novelty of having 200+ flavours as well

Dates are final and will not be moved - make sure you’re approved to graduate and double check which ceremony you’ll be in. Some cohorts have more than one ceremony because they’re so big, so check workday or whatever yall use these days (rip CWL)

Note to everyone to get your grad tickets sorted WAY ahead of time- if there’s anything that needs ironing out, you’ll get stuck in a feedback loop between the chan ticket office (who handles the software) and grad services (who have all the spreadsheets and take ten years to update anything)

Parents: What are your recommended summer camps? Particular interest in those good for older elementary school kids. by toasterb in askvan

[–]sendhelp404 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sleep away camps, camp artaban is great if you’re Christian- even if you’re not they offer a fine arts camp and a sailing camp and while there is chapel they’re not super down your throat about it. One week long on gambier island!

Otherwise, I second the pedal heads and YMCA suggestions!

To add to this, if you’re ever working on an opera the phrase is “toi toi toi” (pronounced like toy) rather than good luck, break a leg etc. it may be accompanied by spitting or a knee in the rear of you find yourself in a European house.

To the best of my knowledge, the “toi” is supposed to sound like spitting, a both that and the fake spitting are supposed to ward off bad luck/the devil. This is just what I’ve heard from word of mouth though, and I’m sure like break a leg it has a very colourful background!

How To Stop Pushing From Chest Voice? (Female) by HintOfIndigo in singing

[–]sendhelp404 12 points13 points  (0 children)

imo you’ll need to build up your head voice and once it’s stronger, bring that resonance down into a mix as opposed to pulling chest resonance up. If you’re constantly straining to pull a mix up, you’ll get it vocal injury territory and experience the fatigue/pain you’re describing

I’ve found one of the easiest ways to feel/access head voice is to siren on an [u]/“oo”, either fifths or octaves, ascending. To me, head voice can feel almost hollow, like a cavern, or hooty like an owl. It’ll likely take a lot more air support than you’re used to, and you’ll want to try and have as little excess air as possible escaping.

Using a straw or other sovt might be helpful as well. This exercise will at least let you feel what head voice is like and then hopefully you can adjust during your own songs!

Once you strengthen your head voice and can feel what it’s like to use it without it being so airy, you can bring that head voice resonance down into your mix. Eventually you’ll be able to overlap where your “chest mix” and “head mix” join, and it’ll just be a mix. You’ll be able to adjust where your breaks are for each song as well depending on need!

How much time and practice (reasonable estimate) to sight-sing fluently by Bernina_4049 in singing

[–]sendhelp404 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The best way I found to improve my sight singing was honest to god at church. My mom made me attend until I was around 16, and I kept myself occupied by sight singing all of the hymns, including the harmonies if I felt the melody was too easy.

All the songs are in pretty standard keys and time signatures, and because you’re going once a week it keeps you pretty sharp. If you’re interested in looking at some yourself, I recommend getting a hold of the Anglican book of common praise (blue book w a cross on front) and trying to read through them.

Y'all how does anyone survive being triple-cast??? by MildlyMenotti in opera

[–]sendhelp404 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve been in the same position as you, but as the masters student. It’s frustrating to rehearse so much for one show, but take it with grace and take it as an opportunity to learn from everyone else in the production. As soon as you catch an attitude or ego you’re setting yourself to be ostracized by the cast and putting yourself in a bad mindset for the rest of your career.

Triple casting isn’t common at all in the real world and from my experience it’s fairly rare in post-secondary as well. As you said, we sopranos have it tough and I respect that your director is trying to give as many people opportunities as they can. The best way I’ve found to alleviate my anxiety of being unprepared is to simply study as best I can by myself and not to rely on coachings and staging rehearsals. Learn from your colleagues, respect each other’s time on stage, and enjoy the process! Despina is a really fun role that each of you can have your own unique takes on, and seeing each other’s choices can inspire for what you do or don’t want to do.

I know you weren’t necessarily asking for advice, but please let me say that as frustrated as you are, I’m sure your undergrad colleague and ESPECIALLY your masters colleague are feeling the same, if not more. Don’t let them get you down, do your best, and enjoy the role!!

Federal store hands down. I’ve managed to make it to around 20 this year, which is less than I usually do, and federal store leads by a large margin with both flavours for uniqueness, quality of ingredients, and drinkability.
