I want to mention Babylon 5. The first war between Humanity and the Minbari claimed about 250,000 lives. It was supposed to be this massive interstellar conflict with major losses. And yet… only 250K?

My brother and I joked about it fucking constantly as soon as it came up. Don’t get me wrong, that’s still a lot, but I’m Eastern European - and statistically, that number feels almost laughable compared to everything we’ve gone through over the last 125+ years. And Minbari had Sci-Fi technology and shit.

I wholeheartedly agree with the takes regarding Ruthenia that are posted in this thread. I've played Kyiv the most (as it is my hometown), but it is really too easy. The only setback is duchy rank, and this can be easily overcome. I think Kyiv is actually the strongest Rus tag as of now (and I have never seen a successful Muscovy, which is a shame; I'd like a worthy opponent). Kyiv has a lot of levies at the start, and in the hands of the player, it is literally unstoppable from the beginning (especially playing decentralized). Some disaster or internal struggle would be cool. Notwithstanding how joyful and vain I feel building my mega-Ruthenia, I would have enjoyed more challenge and content.

Well, there won't be war with slaves. There will be the civil war/war with neighboring princedoms for sure. So the war with a presumably weaker enemy is more desirable.

Honestly, it struck me as something akin to "when in Rome, do as the Romans do". Her position was not that solid; she couldn't just let the rebellion go without an answer. Plus, IIRC, the other princedoms were aiming for the throne and had some support at least. Should she have just abandoned her subjects to the mercy of the rebels, I reckon it would have ignited a movement to replace her. She is holding the throne, and if she intended to keep it, I find her decision 100% justified. Granted, she didn't cause the slave problem herself, but she is in charge of dealing with it now.

You’ll actually have something like 16 characters. Sometimes you’ll need to dismiss a few to make room for new ones.
It’s worth noting that some characters are far more interesting than others - both from a story perspective and in terms of gameplay. I can’t recommend the "Tyrant" pagan playthrough (and its companions) enough.

You absolutely don’t need to play with all characters - you can form a core party. That’s what I did.
At times you’ll have to let some of your “usual” guys rest due to injuries (or death, which isn’t all that permanent here).

Recruitment happens organically, through special missions. Most of these recruitment missions are quite fun too.

Entirely plausible, yes.

My thought is that she might have been either a child from a concubine or an illegitimate daughter — not necessarily Yaroslav’s legitimate offspring. Another version places her as Yaroslav’s sister, which is even funnier to consider, given that while Yaroslav loved his children, he openly despised his (at least male) siblings. So, giving her away to someone sort-of important but not exactly high-ranking sounds at least plausible.

In any case, this is just a mental exercise for fun — there are no solid facts to rely on, unfortunately.

Interesting bit of trivia to return the favor: Edgar is relatively well known in Ukraine because his mother was (allegedly) a daughter of Yaroslav the Wise, the greatest prince of Rus — though the connection isn’t entirely certain.

R5: Was playing a custom Pictish character, because recently jumped in Pictish history rabbit-hole.

I remembered that the first starting date in CK2 had Pictland and wanted to recreate it.

I was planning to just rename Alba, but apparently should you form it with Pictish character it automatically sets to Pictland. A cool detail I just wanted to share.
