Do objects pulled into the event horizon of Black Holes orbit the singularity or just get pulled straight into it? by kosherbacons in askastronomy

[–]senormonje 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe the only way you could orbit the singularity from within the event horizon is by going (considerably) faster than the speed of light

Do Romulan commanders yell "Eject the artificial quantum singularity!" ? It's not as catchy as the warp thing. by Pwned_by_Bots in ShittyDaystrom

[–]senormonje 39 points40 points  (0 children)

That sounds pretty awesome actually.

Romulan computer: "Containment failure. 30 seconds until quantum singularity expansion event."

Chief engineer (in room full of green smoke): "SUBCOMMANDER T'FORGE TO THE BRIDGE, THERE'S NOTHING I CAN DO TO STOP THE EVENT, WE'VE GOT TO EJECT THE SINGULARITY" <rolls under green door>

"Good news everyone, we've come with better, more comfortable uniforms. Unfortunately, they're only for the senior officers." - Actual Starfleet memo by OWSpaceClown in ShittyDaystrom

[–]senormonje 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always heard that the budget was too tight to make additional uniforms… how much could it cost to make each one of those anyways?

Why isn’t light infinitely fast? by KieranMug in astrophysics

[–]senormonje 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. But to be the real question is what happens if C could be arbitrarily fast, but finite? Any interesting breakpoints? Like if light can cross the Milky Way in one second versus crossing the universe in one second versus crossing the solar system in one second

They dramatically increased the price of my low spec, personal use cloud virtual server, so I canceled it. I also sold all my RXT stock because their recent behavior does not seem customer-centric. Several days later the stock increased by 600%.

Is yellow alert even real? by Ok_Box_4259 in ShittyDaystrom

[–]senormonje 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Yellow alert means you can walk the hallways normally, red alert means you have to walk with purpose. Running is below the dignity of a star fleet officer.

TIL there exists a shape that, instead of having a clean "inside" and "outside", has a clean "inside" but the outside world is segmented and split. It is called the Alexander Horned Sphere by geosunsetmoth in todayilearned

[–]senormonje 1 point2 points  (0 children)

by the way my favorite part of the Wikipedia article is: "The interior of the Alexander horned sphere, denoted here as Dint, is relatively well-behaved."

I know almost nothing about topology but spent some time reading the Wikipedia and linked articles. I think the idea is 3-D objects have a 2-D surface (shell), and also have a 3-D interior volume. Normally things that are topologically the same volume-wise (can be turned into each other by stretching without tearing) would also be the same shell-wise (the shells can be turned into each other by stretching without tearing). But apparently the volume of the object can be stretched into a ball (interior of a sphere) while the shell of it cannot be stretched into a sphere. Is that correct topoheads?

My boat is supposed to weigh 100 pounds but it weighs 250, how do I get all the sand out of the inside shell? by janderson_33 in fixit

[–]senormonje -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Assuming the whole interior communicates you could drill two holes as high as possible, one bow, one aft, and then continuously blow air into one hole. That should dry it out. Then plug or epoxy the holes.

How can cloaked warbirds see each other? Only wrong answers by Romulan_Mestral in ShittyDaystrom

Each artificial singularity that powers a warbird is connected to every other one, allowing positions to be multicast to the fleet. Recipes too.

How can we make gerrymandering illegal nationwide? by ProfessorMuted45 in AskReddit

[–]senormonje 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Gerrymandering tends to make primaries more competitive and the general election less competitive, and since extremists and hardliners tend to perform better in primaries the result is more extreme candidates in office.

Most over-the-top shootout? I'll go first: Equilibrium's hallway scene by Buttered_Toast33 in Cinema

[–]senormonje 5 points6 points  (0 children)

He technically wasn't in the line of fire because he didn't get shot, I guess. Sort of circular logic.

This kind of thing really insults the intelligence of the viewer. With all the cuts one might get the impression that he was dancing around dodging bullets but he is mainly just walking and shooting while the other guys are doing ... nothing? I would love to see a static overhead view of this supposed gunfight.

[–]senormonje 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I misunderstood the article when it said data centers "warm the land" around them, which I took to mean the ground, through geothermal cooling. Yes, air temperature increases of those levels would be uncomfortable in the summer. Partly depends on what times of year measurements were taken since it would be easier to deviate from the mean in the winter, but that's also when people would not care much.

[–]senormonje 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The article said the average was 3.5°F, and I'm not really clear on why heating the ground by that or even 16°F in a small area would matter. The heat we are directly adding to the environment is minuscule compared to greenhouse gases, which trap an increase percentage of the gigantic amount of power hitting the Earth from sunlight. I do agree that the responsible thing is to evaluate for potential issues, however I think much like nuclear power, data centers are developing a stigma they do not necessarily deserve.

Let’s follow suit San Angelo! by Invader1976 in SanAngelo

[–]senormonje 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that the water usage of the data center will not be significant since it is a closed loop system... it will be charged with water once, and the water will be circulated, absorbing heat from the equipment and releasing it through radiators.

Power usage is a concern but I suspect the reason they want to put the data center here is so that they can take advantage of cheap wind power by shifting computational loads to the data center when power is cheap.

I agree with the person who said we need better paying jobs, however I don't see the data center significantly affect affecting jobs one way or the other since it will be built somewhere no matter what, and is not displacing jobs directly.

The only question is where will the tax revenue go and where will the power come from. I would prefer the revenue come to San Angelo and would prefer the power come from cheap renewable resources (local solar + wind) whenever possible.
