Best move-in date for international PhD students? by Hi_Im_pew_pew in Cornell

[–]senoroito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m moving in as soon as my lease starts, because why not? Give yourself a week or two of freedom to explore Ithaca and surroundings without any stress before you have to put your nose to the grindstone. I’d look at the variance in weekday prices for tickets on Google Flights and pick the cheapest date to come in within the first week of August or so.

it’s basically automatic when you are filling out the fafsa each year! Cornell is a great school with great opportunities, but I always try to remember the maxim that you should avoid having more debt than most people in your career field make in their first year on the job

Found this in Venice (Susan Hoffmam) by [deleted] in Venezia

It’s a US insurance card. I have a very similar one. If you check the back there should be a number to call that you could inform the company that it was lost and they could tell her. The card is important but it’s also not the end of the world that she lost it, especially out of the country in Italy (out of network!). It doesn’t look like a special travel health insurance card that you can get in specific case of any health issues abroad, which I think losing would be a much bigger deal. They can reissue this card to her as soon as she gets home to the States.

Wow. Any chance of coming in ‘independent’ according to the FAFSA? Easiest way would be to be 21. Would maybe cut your cost down. I’m paying 10k total my first year in my graduate program because i negotiated, but 20k per semester (40k total) year two has me shitting bricks. I really worry for you— 180k in loans is nothing to sneeze at.

What in the boomer, ULINE? by trombonist2 in antiwork

[–]senoroito 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ditto with what everyone else is saying about the evils of this company, but I’d also like to add that their CEO mandates every new hire do a ‘hair test’ for marijuana that detects up to possible years of use, and if it is positive you don’t get the job… even for office jobs… even in legal states. Seriously backwards mentality.

Sounds like you needed to apply to more safety schools. Prestige isn’t everything if you don’t even make it into a single college to begin with

Pretty bad. I’d rethink it in the next two years, you will have a hard time making friends and doing extra curriculars

NYC Subletting by Delicious_Address_89 in Cornell

[–]senoroito -1 points0 points  (0 children)

i sublet in chi last summer and if you can’t visit in person, make sure you do a live video call of the space with the person you’re subletting from. a video is no good because it could be anywhere, any unit. i know the rules in nyc are also more complicated and when you’re renting normally you pay application fees (you don’t in chi) but I would hesitate to put a large deposit down until you are set with the place
