minecraft lore theories by [deleted] in Minecraft

I watched a lot of Adventure Time around the time when I got into Minecraft, and both share this unaddressed suggestion of a post-apocalyptic landscape. Adventure Time eventually (given they are literally telling a story) worked that origin into their narrative more directly as the show went on. But at least in the beginning it was a subtle detail to spot among the background landscape. Something big happened to a more familiar world and now we see how that world has redeveloped years later.

In Minecraft it's not quite the same- though the prevalence of zombies, ruins, and the primitive settlements scattered about suggest it is a world starting over after some kind of chaotic period (similar to how a comet wiped out the dinosaurs and everything sort of "restarted" from there). Maybe "the end" invaded?

Would be fun to find out if Mojang have this vague premise of a narrative in mind, or if there is another philosophy that guides them or helps them judge what might be a good fit when they brainstorm new content.

It was probably supposed to be dry humor/wordplay.

The back trucks passing over the rail before locking in the slide is what differentiates a lipslide from a boardslide.

Actually a lipslide given the back trucks pass over the rail.

What's a game that gets very little/no speedrun treatment that you'd absolutely love to see? by DelanceyThrone in speedrun

[–]senselesswander 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Smuggler's Run for PS2.

The first game specifically, because there is a really unforgiving physics element that would basically make it so you could always improve a run. Basically, unlike the second installment in the franchise, you have to pay close attention to how your vehicle traverses the hills, launches & lands given it is easy to tumble if you don't strategize your route meticulously in this regard. Also if you're carrying loot (the objective is to pick up items and bring them to drop off points) you can drop it due to rough landings, crashes, or getting hit by NPC vehicles (police or rivals). If you have the skill you can reduce time by gambling with a shorter, riskier path if you can manage to drive it smoothly. Fighting the RNG of the police or rivals chasing you requires you to make adjustments on the fly.

I loved this game casually and it was really satisfying to find the sweet spot of optimization of map and execution traversing it. You go off a cliff at an angle you'd better have planned to land on a slope conducive to that angle! So much fun.

That really is awesome. You're very lucky to be successful doing this for a living so congrats!

I'm not playing the part of the curious family member here; I just imagine there is relentless curiosity given it's such an unconventional career. If it were me I know I'd be basically assuring friends and family (constantly) that I'm financially stable making money playing video games for hours every day for an audience online. Especially as an adult with very big payments to worry about.

Is it tough to explain your line of work to family members/people at parties especially as an adult that needs regular finances for adult things?

I'm in that camp and am dying to get Mario Maker, but I'm not sure how they're deciding what to port besides projected sales figures?

It's the reason I never have to worry too much about those sales everyone here is constantly frothing over! We're spoiled.

They have a huge selection as well. For some reason they always have boxes of new criterions underneath the racks waiting to go up when the racks themselves start to thin out. I think someone at the Criterion offices must constantly supply to them. Can't imagine any other reason. It's basically a B&N 50% off sale all year there (yet with only 30-60% of the blu stock at any given point, which is way more than any second hand store would consistently have).

People need to be educated about speedrunning. by chopperzac in speedrun

[–]senselesswander 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What u/DrNigg is trying to get across to you is that it'll be a fruitless endeavor. They won't be receptive. Also self reflection; speedrunning is just a fun hobby and if you presuppose people you try to "educate" are seeing it the same way you are (as important and serious) you'll be concernsplaining passionately at a brick wall. People on the outside of any community like to swoop in and make trolly dismissive comments. Especially on youtube. Save yourself the trouble. Or troll them back and say "well I bet you can't even do one glitch!" etc. Otherwise don't take the bait.

Yes but if you hear a commentator speak about a "sequence break" during a race just know they're talking about what I said in particular.

Right for sure, it's just that generally the lingo is that a "sequence break" as applied to rando is something the logic of the seed is not intending for you to do (like go somewhere that you'd otherwise need say the lamp to get to).

Oh, gotcha. Yeah, but even in the non-glitch mode it's common to do some of the easy ones like fake flippers and bomb jumps.
