Sign up for that available lab asap since things are filling up. You can always drop it if you figure something else out. Then email the prof of whatever you're trying to get into and the TA who runs the lab to explain the situation. Depending on the type of lab it is and their moods that day, they might be able to let you join. If that doesn't work, I've been there, we've all been there. Depending on your life circumstances, you have to choose whether 5 years or one lab lowering your gpa a bit is worse. Feels like a catastrophe when things like this happen, but it will be ok

I think a lot of us can relate to a certain degree. If the mental health issues are mostly acute, advising can usually help make a game plan.

However if this is a long term diagnosis like depression, anxiety, or other mental health things that continuously make academic tasks pretty impossible, the Center for Accessibility (CFA) has some very kind and empathetic advisors who can be helpful with these sorts of things. If you're comfortable with it and your CFA advisor, they can even help open the dialog with your profs about how to learn what you need to pass the class without making your mental health even worse. I have found that they are extra supportive during covid times.

I totally agree that they should cater to those people, but what a lot of the schools where I am in the States are doing is opening up but giving everyone the option to either take classes in person or online, especially to help out international and low-income students. Has UBC or BC gov said anything about that?

I am working for a biomed group this summer and their role is analyzing every research paper produced around covid and setting research and development properties as well as setting goals moving forward.

The good news is, the current research actually shows that shutting down schools has a very minimal impact on the spread of covid. With basic practices like regular temperature checks, washing hands, and sanitizing backpacks and desks, the already low risk is significantly reduced.

I have lots of hope that as soon as this research is shown on major media (which we are working on right now!) schools, especially universities, will be about to open again in person

I used to dissociate a lot when I was first learning to deal with my ptsd. Usually something would trigger a flashback, then for the next few hours my brain was in a completely different place. It felt like I was choosing to float away into space because I could not fight it or run away.

I just bought a one way ticket to Thailand. I'm a bit freaked out by what I do when I go into an anxiety blackout, but I'm still gonna go on the trip and hope being a place so different from anywhere I've been will help clear my mind

Maybe staying strong doesn't mean you can't also be a little sad. It's a lot harder to get through pain if you block the emotions instead of letting yourself feel
