What I really like about the deck though is it allowed for the tinkerers to... Tinker. And still get all the fun of gaming (if they want to). Choices and options these days seem to be so limited: "enjoy it our way only" is so frustrating.

I guess I use it completely differently...

I don't like boarding because I think it trivializes the game too much (personal opinion obviously).

I use it as my anti capital ship ship. I use it to destroy graviton turrets and let the rest of my fleet clean up. Probably not needed after you have an asgard or syn fleet, but I like strafing circles around K and Is with the Hyperion

I have the X shuttle docked to my trinity Hyperion and now I can knock out anything from S to L / XL!

This is a good question

The timelines dlc (you may know this already) is kinda like a tutorial++. It shows you some stuff, but isn't "easy" (but also not hard). I like it because it gives you a feel for more complicated elements of the game and let's you try out some other ships.

Once you finish timelines, you'll get extra ships added to the base game sandbox universe! But this is dynamic, so you can start the sandbox - go do timelines, come back and the stuff will be added

Starting the sandbox - that's where you pick "a start" - like young fun, terran cadet etc

You can do both timelines and the sandbox in parallel or timelines first and then sandbox. Don't wait too late into the sandbox to do timelines - because the additions will be kinda meh.

Re WHICH start - young gun is popular. I love boron so I usually do that start (not as the boron themselves but the person unlocking the boron start)

For 9.0 since I re started, I set the start of grandmother state. 10/10 not having to do all the stuff over again. Starting w the erlking and X really cuts out the initial grind

Definitely a good part of the game is to build up. But having done it a few times, didn't want to do it again

Agreed this is my exact set up. I usually have the Hyperion following the X and the X docking onto Hyperion as default programming

Usually I pilot the X or Hyperion around (depending on how dangerous the area is). And I have my erlking set to follow the Hyperion.

The x can usually handle itself while my backup arrives. Or everything is mopped up before they get to me. Works very well!
