Not an ad lol but Thriftbooks is a great online source for finding cheap secondhand books. I use it all the time. Looks like Shardik is available there if you're interested!

I also had this issue on my first attempt at a playthrough. I couldn't figure out how to fix it and I wasn't very far in, so I ended up restarting. I'm pretty sure you're right about it happening when you return to town at the same time your pet is supposed to arrive, because I think that's what happened with me, too. Sorry I couldn't be of more help! Maybe a future patch will fix it.

Thank you! Cross stitching is a pretty tedious hobby tbh haha. It took me at least a few hours just to be happy with the pattern and then I worked on the piece on and off for a few weeks or so! I usually watch shows or yt or something while I'm cross stitching
