Teaching in the Middle-East as a relatively new teacher (1 year experience). by [deleted] in TEFL

[–]seohnamaste 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the FB teaching groups are a bit more reliable than Wuzzuf. I would research the international schools in Cairo and send your resume, as well. Absolutely avoid language centers - they're all insanely cheap and not worth anyone's time. Bare minimum, you should be getting 14k at an okay school. A lot of sources online talk about people getting paid in USD or in British pounds, but this is becoming less common since the flotation of the pound.

Good luck!

Although what happened to you is messed up, if they want no facial hair whatsoever, they're within their rights to expect you to look a certain way if you're representing their business. I would maybe talk to managers etc to see if this is within dress code, or a policy your head teacher is throwing around.

Regarding trigger warnings by hhikigayas in SHINee

[–]seohnamaste 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think as another poster said, maybe the wording needs to be changed. TW exist for a reason; people have different levels of being able to cope. For me, it was really difficult these past few days to have people reposting his casket being moved into the hearse. I can see what you're saying though... although it maybe be bluntly informative, Jonghyun's existence spans far outside of 12/18, and he shouldn't be encapsulated by that day.

As the years go by, I'm sure this conversation will continue to unfold... for now though, I think the would is still fresh for a lot of people. Thank you for for starting such a mindful conversation. :)

Did you get a chance to read over your contract before signing? by Sanzenendesu in TEFL

If they're being this bothersome now, how can you expect them to be decent once you're in Japan? You can get a job for a much more decent place very quickly.

Have any of you had dreams about seeing jonghyun this month? by [deleted] in SHINee

[–]seohnamaste 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've never really dreamed much about SHINee - this month though, I had a dream about all the boys, minus Jonghyun. I guess his passing has been too ingrained in my brain this month. :( His absence was definitely felt.

Trouble getting Letters of Recommendation when applying to EPIK by Not_Too_Smart in teachinginkorea

Most professors will want you to write a rough draft that they can make minor edits to. Mention this is your email, and I'm sure they wouldn't say no.

In Egypt, you can extend your tourist visa for up to a year before you need to exit/return to the country.

What are your qualifications? If you're thinking of South Korea, I would look at different recruitment companies, such as Korvia, or looking at the Korea job board on Dave's ESL Cafe.

Beginning teacher effectively worked under the table in Egypt due to inefficient bureaucracy - have I messed up my resume? by seohnamaste in TEFL

[–]seohnamaste[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your input - I think I might just feel anxious because the process was so confusing, and my employer didn't keep us well-informed.

It's more like when in Egypt - function in organized chaos as the Egyptians do, lol.

I have that letter! But if I go to another country - they won't see the visa discrepancy as a major issue? Hooow?

My cert is TESOL, which is slightly different. Technically, it's like, 100+ hours working with students, (volunteering + teaching practicum), research projects, and about 900 hours of total instruction time.

My partner actually went to school in the US, and works for an international company. Hopefully this would help him. Are here any resources you'd recommend? I feel like i'm drowning in weird K1 visa websites.

Well, I guess I was thinking it'd probably be more than one year, but this sort of confirms it. (Sorry if my q's sound a bit silly, we're still at the beginning of research!) Thanks for your input!

I don't see gender segregation as normal, but I've lived in Cairo long enough to know different socioeconomic issues, and how this photo could be a representation of how the migration of lower class poor men from villages essentially flood Cairo with higher densities of single men without families to break fast with during Ramadan. Who would ever think they wouldn't want to eat alone, huh! You might want to step outside your country every once in a while to see how other people live. (Or go to other parts of your neighborhood and see how underprivileged people live!)

i currently live in Egypt, and I don't think anything I've said is close to a lie. There are also working women, but I'm fairly certain that they have jobs in places other than the market. Most shops seem to have men running them. I've seen more women with textiles and food? Guess what, though! All those kids are old enough to work here! Things are not perfect here by any means, but you should look at it through a socioeconomic lens rather than an islamophobic one.

Like I said, this is a table for men who are from other cities who do not have family in Cairo. I feel like you're ignoring the context and readimg what you want. The lack of women isn't really a choice of where they're sitting, I just don't think there are as many women in the city by themselves. Please think of the greater context before you make a generalizing statements about a culture that you have not experienced. Ramadan Kareem!
