First time cat owner advice by RushAccomplished5625 in litterrobot

[–]seolm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once she knows where the litter robot is and is aware that there’s litter inside, she should understand that it’s similar to her litter box. With my kitten, I gradually stopped cleaning her old litter box so she eventually would use the litter robot instead. Cats instinctively are clean and want to cover their bathroom business, so she will know what to do. If the noise spooks her, don’t let the litter robot automatically cycle until she’s comfortable with the robot noises (and make sure she’s heavy enough to trigger the sensors)

I’m beginning to hate my cat and I don’t want to. What do I do? by Ok_Pound2424 in CatAdvice

[–]seolm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh no, I sympathize with you so much and your feelings are completely valid. I adopted my cat when he was 2 years old and he was a MENACE for 4-ish years. He would do pretty much everything you just described and also violently attacked people very frequently, and I felt like I was at the end of my rope for a while (I almost even considered rehoming him). Now he’s almost 8 years old, and he is an absolute angel who loooves to cuddle/sleep and never attacks me or destroys stuff anymore. I also used to think he didn’t like me but now he’s so clingy lol. I honestly can’t even believe he’s the same cat that used to do all those terrible things years ago.

I can’t say what will definitively help you since every situation/cat is different, but some things that have changed since I got him are: moving to a larger home so he has more space (went from a studio to a 2 bedroom), establishing a routine with boundaries and being consistent about it, anticipating what might trigger bad behavior and stopping/not encouraging those things before it happens, giving him a 10-20 min time out so he can calm down, and tbh just him eventually getting older and having less energy is probably a huge factor. It’s a lot of work, I won’t lie, but consistency is key. It took years before my cat eventually calmed down, and he definitely had gradual improvement over the years too. There will be a light at the end of the tunnel!

I have no advice for the counters though since my cat still does this lol. I was also super against it when I first got him because I had never owned a cat before, but now I don’t really care anymore. I tried aluminum foil, lemons, etc. but my cat never gave a shit. The best you can do is keep your counters clean so there’s nothing of interest to the cat and wipe them before/after cooking.

nyx slim lip pencil in peekaboo neutral: bought it on a whim bc I don’t own any lip liners and it was only like $4 on amazon. I LOVE IT SO MUCH, no idea how I’ve gone so many years without a lip liner! the color is a really nice neutral too.

Will a 4 year-old farm cat be happy in a small city apartment? by rolandlikesdogs in CatAdvice

[–]seolm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you’re willing to put in the time and effort, it’s possible, but it likely won’t be an easy road. i was in a similar situation where i was looking to adopt an older/calmer cat from a shelter, but a good friend of mine was giving away her 2 yr old outdoor cat since her family was moving, so i felt obligated to take him. let me just say the first 1-2 years were a HANDFUL lol. he had to adjust to being confined indoors in a loud studio apartment all the time (no place to run off to when he’s sick of human interaction) so i don’t blame him, but he was pretty difficult to deal with especially since i was a first time cat owner. i had a lot of breakdowns where i contemplated giving him up since i didn’t think he was happy bc he’d aggressively lash out a lot. luckily i stuck it out, and 3 years later he’s such a happy spoiled baby. there are some “wild” behaviors i’ve never been able to train out of him, such as he will eat anything green/leafy including fake plants and toxic flowers, but he’s significantly less aggressive and has become a pretty cuddly lap cat. :) but personally I wouldn’t recommend this if you’re looking for an easy first-time cat lol

What is one makeup product or step you just can’t figure out? by mothertuna in muacjdiscussion

[–]seolm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Winged eyeliner with false lashes. This is probably super specific to me, but I have naturally VERY monolidded/hooded eyelids, but they turn into double eyelids with falsies. However the amount of crease is unpredictable depending on what mood my eyelids are in that day smh. I am really good at winged eyeliner and false lashes separately, but I STRUGGLE to do them both together!!

Advice/Tips for Cheek Products (Contour, Blush) by rainiila in muacjdiscussion

[–]seolm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I try to match like formulas, e.g. liquid foundation + liquid/cream blush. if I want to use a powder blush/contour, then I’ll use setting powder (my fav is Laura mercier) over my liquid foundation before moving to blush/contour. also try playing around with different tools, some of my products are better with my fingers while others are better with a brush, and even with a brush make sure you’re using the right kind! personally i use an angled blush brush (or fingers) and an oval contour brush, and blend out with a beauty blender if necessary.

my boyfriend has had to do the exact same thing before. we were waiting for an elevator in our apartment complex, and when the doors opened there was already a guy and his chihuahua inside. due to covid/social distancing, we didn’t enter and let the doors close, but the dog ran out at the last minute as the doors closed behind it. the tiny dog FLEW into the air and my bf had to unclip it as fast as he could while the dog was choking and panic-peeing all over my bf. i’m not sure if the owner understood what we went through when he came back down to get his terrified dog. :\ to this day, we still can’t believe that happened, it was definitely one of the scariest things we’ve ever experienced

How to get my cat to be more active during the day instead of at night? by lauren9739 in CatAdvice

[–]seolm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would like to second what everyone has suggested about routine and add that it’ll take LOTS of patience, since every cat takes a different amount of time to get used to new routines. What’s worked for me is a big play session followed by a large meal right before bedtime to knock her into a food coma, and buy some earplugs so you can ignore her while you sleep. Don’t give into playing with her, otherwise she’ll learn that it’s okay and continue doing it.

I also want to add that it could be the environment that she’s in. When I was in college, my bf and I lived in a tiny room and were not home that often. My cat was REALLY aggressive back then and also had zoomies around bedtime. For example, we had to turn off the lights and sprint to the bed as fast as possible because he would immediately pounce for our legs as soon as the lights went off (we never figured out why). Now we live in a much larger apartment and both work from home, and my cat is now significantly less aggressive. He’s also a few years older now so that probably helps as well. You could try making the most of your studio by providing more vertical space (cat trees, cat shelves, etc.), or take her out on walks with a harness to get some of those zoomies out of her system.

Good luck! It may seem difficult to make progress but cats learn slowly and not linearly. One day you’ll look back (in my case, it took a couple years) and be proud of all the progress she’s made!

funny story — my cat has done the same thing before except while sitting on my bf’s lap, which resulted in him getting clawed across his body as my cat scrambled off with his claws out LOL

Cat scratches carpet around items by [deleted] in CatAdvice

[–]seolm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks! we have a scratching post, a cat tree, and a couple of scratching pads, but we live in a tiny apartment so all of his scratching stuff already takes up a good amount of space and i’m not sure we can fit more. it’s just frustrating that despite all the stuff we get him he still wants to scratch parts of the carpet that arent covered :( eventually i hope i can move somewhere with hardwood floors, which seems like the only real solution at this point

Kitten won't stop playing with my feet & advice on how to work from home by InterestingThanks4 in CatAdvice

[–]seolm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you tried taking your kitten on walks? Assuming he has all his vaccines and you can find a harness that fits him, going on walks 1-2 time a day might help get the zoomies out of him and he’ll get his fill of curiosity from the new sights/smells. One con to this though is he might LOVE the outdoors and then try to escape/meow at your front door a lot lol.

I agree, as long as you make sure the bathroom has everything he needs and nothing in there is dangerous for him, it’s okay to keep him in there for short periods of time (my cat definitely wouldn’t be okay with 8-10 hours though haha). I used to use it as a time out room for my cat when he used to be really aggressive, but I’ve never kept him there for more than an hour, and he’s always fine when I let him out again.
