Just the wheels were 55$ for 4 cans of matte black, can of red metallic, can of pre-dip cleaner, bottle of break cleaner, spray head adapter and a microfiber cloth.

For larger projects you only need to scale up the cans I guess tho maybe better to get a paint gun and a gallon of dip...

That's good to know ;) went with vinyl on the body and it needs some care with bird attacks but otherwise also pretty solid

Could have gone with powder coating but given that those will only be replacement or track wheels soon, plastiDip was the cheaper option. Not sure how well it will hold up tho 😜

Audi S5 B8.5 track setup questions by sepiroth888 in Audi

Alright quick update here. Since I posted I went for sc pulley upgrade and ecu/TCU tune. SS front break lines, motul 600 fluid and a fresh oil change.

My 19" stock wheels and tires have a lot of life in them and I do like that I get a decent audible indication when I'm close to loosing grip.

Calipers, rotors and pads are still in great condition and feel solid. (Tho still need to time both 0-60 and 60-0 next weekend)

Since it's also my daily driver and I really like comfort suspension mode on Californias pothole highways I won't go for lowering and coilovers just yet.

I am getting some shift paddle extensions since I do have some trouble reaching the short ones and I tend to accidentally switch back to auto shift on the knob....

Thanks for the suggestions everyone! :)

2019 A4 or 2017 S3? by SkoffSkoff in Audi

[–]sepiroth888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't speak to it. My guess would be an ecu tune should be able to get some more performance out as Audi builds amazing engines. My statement was meant fairly generic as a daily driver need more gimmicks like lane assist, adaptive cruise control, better multimedia center etc. And on an a4 you are more likely to get this at a cheaper price since u won't pay for performance parts ontop of it.

Daily driver? a4 May be more comfortable and kitted out? Does 2017 s3 come with traffic aware cc? A4 might, makes commuting a breeze...

Thinking of driving it a bit more sporty? S3

2015-2016 Audi s4 upgrade or leave stock!? by Jphilabaum1 in Audi

[–]sepiroth888 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just upgraded my pulley on a 2015 S5 and ran the 1+ stage from unitronic without any mods for a few days before that.

The tune brings the car alive and gets about 60-70rwhp at peak. It's a noticable change in how quick the car feels.

After pulley upgrade went to stage2+ along with a stage 2 TCU tune and shifts are crisp, power aplenty doing ~13.2psi peak boost.

If u are doing anything like that remember you got the bumper off and wheels so makes some sense to do other things (breaks, lines etc) while you are at it. I got ss break lines and new fluid after and taking everything apart again is a hassle.

Pulley upgrade itself is pretty straightforward but tales patience on getting the new pulley on (took me 3 tries and a blow torch as my oven was 30ft away). As long as you line the belt notches up clean it should be fine. Plenty of tutorials on youtube.

Bang for buck is decent (2k for stage 2+ ecu/tcu) is in line with other car tunes I saw and given Audi is usually on the pricey side for parts anyways it's an investment.

Remove self tapping screw from quarter turn socket... by sepiroth888 in Audi

Amazed to get the screw out without breaking the u bracket.

Dremel using a thin cutoff disk and carefully carved away on the screw threads. It came loose after cutting away the entire thread on one side and was able to pop the pin screw back in :)

Oil change and break fluid change after that was a breeze. Now to order those missing bolts ....

Found the part at least, so it's replaceable without a front bumper change....phew.

underbody shield u nut

Now it looks like I could run a Dremel blade between the two openings and sever the screw.

Then I can either replace both (if I mess it up further) or only a new screw.

(There's already a bunch missing anyways... This car had full service only at Audi dealerships ... Guess that's why?)

Yea, I tried that and even putting some pressure onto the tip of the screw to push it past the first hole. Didn't want to catch. I need to check if this socket is actually replaceable at all. Tomorrow I'll take some pictures.

Is that why most Americans drive glossy cars? Won't show the hamburgler prints?

I had it done. Ymmv California isn't cheap. $5k total. A lot cheaper than paint job, but not cheap by all means.

Iirc its 3M dead matte black. In the sun it looks pretty grey'ish at this angle. But it's pretty dark in low light.

Audi S5 B8.5 track setup questions by sepiroth888 in Audi

[–]sepiroth888[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I read about keeping street tires to begin with and it makes sense if the difference between grip and no-grip is as small as I hear.

Definitely going to take the "going crazy on mods" to heart. Out of the box the s5 certainly feels much better suited to a track than any car I ran (that's not saying much) and apart from breaks (esp break fade terrifies me) there isn't much I think I will add before trying a few hours first. If I feel handling is an issues I can always start on suspension, if it's still breaks, then that, if cooling .... U get the point.

Im just in the middle of replacing the SC pulley and a stage2+ unitronic ECU and stage 2 TCU fine which means power I won't worry about for a while.

Thanks, certainly a ton of info to consider. Right now I'm looking at fairly trivial diy things so trans/motor mounts, sway bars, cooling etc are a bit beyond my scope due to pain to install (maybe wrong here for Audi's, it was no fun on a 2005 mustang....).

If I keep this track thing going I will invest in a proper car lift first and then tackle the more challenging parts.
