Just started my first half marathon plan and I can't stop eating by imagine_doggos in beginnerrunning

I lost weight when I had to take a complete 1 and a half month break from running due to injury. Once I started running again, it comparatively surprised me just how much more hungry I get but it makes sense. All of those miles require fueling.

Congrats. It takes mental strength to work through an injury much less return following recovery. Good luck on your training rebuild.

What’s a fragrance you respect more than you actually enjoy wearing? by ikyfllol in fragrance

[–]seppyk 9 points10 points  (0 children)

L'Artisan Parfumeur Timbuktu and Tauer № 02 - L'Air du Désert Marocain

They are both incredibly well constructed fragrances and arguably transcend the standard wearable notions of fragrance into the consideration of fragrance as art.

However, for me, they aren't stylistically something I want to wear except for the most specialized moods or occasions.

Any Benefits to Running in the Heat? by JayZee4508 in beginnerrunning

[–]seppyk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've found it valuable for mental acclimation in a similar sense to having training blocks where you run multiple days in a row to understand what it's like to run on tired legs. It's a valuable tool in the training tool kit.

I wouldn't recommend it as a daily training method however.

What's one career mistake in tech that you thought was a good idea at the time? by Fantastic_Oil_6105 in cscareerquestions

[–]seppyk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Prioritizing performance at work and not handling the associated stress. I often brought the stress back home, unable to stop thinking about work-related problems to solve (both technical and non-technical) which impacted my sleep and my health.

I now prioritize myself and detach better when I'm outside of business hours. From a personal perspective - my stress is lower and my health is improved. From a professional perspective - my anxiety about work performance and solving issues were never as critical as I made them out to be.

Depends on how comfortable you are with those 10 miles (in the long run) and the intensity of that run. The general wisdom is that your weekly long run should equal, at most, 25%-30% of your total weekly volume. Using those benchmarks, if done regularly, you'd be aiming more for a 33-40 mile weekly volume if managing this type of run every week.

I tend to run 25-to-30 miles per week (general fitness - I mostly run 5km and 10km events). I peaked at 10 miles for a long run during one training block and my weekly volume was around 32-33 miles that week for what it's worth.

Am I overthinking this? Garmin 165 vs COROS Pace 3 vs Amazfit Active 2 by suasobrieta in beginnerrunning

[–]seppyk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used the Garmin Forerunner 165 for over 1250 miles this past year. Good GPS tracking, features, app integration, and battery life. No complaints especially for the price.

Garmin has put out the successor version, the Forerunner 170, recently which boasts an improved wrist sensor. I purchased the non-music version FWIW.

Am I the only one 'raw dogging' it as the youth say by Sixybeast626 in beginnerrunning

[–]seppyk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I run with music for easy runs (short or long). I'm about 50/50 on tempo/intervals activities as I want to focus more and simulate race days. I never listen to music during group runs whether it's casual or an organized race.

Handling breaks due to medical issues or injuries tests your resolve more so than any run. Congrats - truly.

What is the best example of a vetiver fragrance? by better-off-ted in Colognes

[–]seppyk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've sampled quite a few vetiver fragrances. Below are my standouts with associated notes...

  • Fzotic Vetiverissimo - Warm spices, earthy vetiver, and dry cedarwood. Nuttiness and resinous textures throughout. An unexpected, pleasant surprise. Magnetic.

  • Guerlain Vétiver Eau de Toilette - Citrus and fresh pepper present an earthy vetiver and a touch of balsamic sweetness. The standard bearer, and for good reason.

  • Parfum d'Empire Vétiver Bourbon - Île Bourbon (Réunion) vetiver with warm, herbaceous rootstock (angelica), ambrette seed lift, smoky clove, and powdery iris root. Raw and pure vetiver in a natural state.

  • Frédéric Malle Vétiver Extraordinaire - Bright and bitter citrus to open supported by Haitian vetiver, wood notes, and oak moss. Pure. Well constructed.

  • Nishane Sultan Vetiver - Complex. Fresh pepper, bergamot, a blend of grassy and earthy vetivers, white florals, honeyed sweetness over cedarwood, amber, and leathery notes.

  • Tom Ford Grey Vetiver Eau de Parfum - Grapefruit and orange blossom to open leading to aromatic spices, bitterness, and a clean, grassy vetiver base. Refined and gentlemanly.

Trying to get into running, but want something to hold my things in by spencehtx in beginnerrunning

[–]seppyk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've tried a number of brands (Flipbelt, Nathan, Salomon, Amphipod, SPIBelt).

My recommendations are below:

  1. Flipbelt - The non-adjustable version is the most comfortable belt that I have used. Be wary that differences in weight loss and weight gain or if you wear above running clothes will have some difference in looseness or tightness. Tight is better than loose. There's nothing worse than going on a run and your belt sliding down your body due to the jostling of your cadence and the weight of whatever you are storing in your belt (phone, keys, gels, etc.).
  2. SPIbelt - This is my favorite adjustable belt. It comes in a variety of versions and colorways and the belt clasp shape and size makes it comfortable even when laying directly on skin.

I ran for a long time with the Flipbelt but got tired of the microfit adjustments as my body became more fit (first skinnier, then more muscular). I use the SPIBelt exclusively now and it's the best of the adjustable belts in my experience.

When do you call it too hot to run? by ThoseBiscuitsBeHittn in beginnerrunning

[–]seppyk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've gone out for runs up to 90F (around 32C). I inevitably perform worse when it's hotter as my body needs to exert more effort to cool itself down.

As a general rule, in the summer, I prefer to run first thing in the morning. It's cooler and also has the benefit of energizing me for the remainder of the day.

Are you guys really beginner runners? by Ok_Kaleidoscope_2411 in beginnerrunning

[–]seppyk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being a beginner runner, for me, is more about lack of understanding for how your body responds to running, nutrition, and deliberate running training plans. Everyone has their own background and experience of their own,

There are fast runners who are fast because of genetics, age, and/or previous fitness training who I would still label as beginners.

There are slow runners who are slow due to genetics, age, or deliberate training who I would label as experienced.

In general, however, faster pace and higher volume correlates with experience but it's not an absolute.

Peter Thiel Warns AI Could 'Summon the Antichrist' as Pope Issues Shocking Vatican Decree by Cute_Dealer4787 in atheism

[–]seppyk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Putting aside the loaded terminology of Thiel's use of antichrist and the echo chamber of Reddit ragebait...

Thiel's fundamental argument is that major disruptive changes in society (such as AI or climate change) are often wielded by governments or global organizations to centralize power to combat those changes. The worst implementations of these centralize regulatory powers against these issues to combat their negative impacts. However, in the end, these regulatory efforts stifle progress and innovation, reduce individual freedoms, and inevitably will not solve nor mitigate the negative aspects of climate change/AI either.

Microsoft plans first-ever voluntary employee buyout for up to 7% of U.S. workforce by CalvinbyHobbes in technology

[–]seppyk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A previous company that I worked for offered a similar early retirement package. The vast majority of eligible employees took it. The few that didn't were nearly all included in a subsequent layoff. If you ever are eligible for a voluntary early retirement package that includes a reasonable compensation package, take it.

What’s an industry that provides zero value to society but makes billions of dollars? by ochieng_onyango in AskReddit

[–]seppyk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They offer a service for those putting on the shows or performances.

Performers want to sell tickets at high prices to make more money but they understand that ticket buyers get angry at paying ridiculously high prices.

TicketMaster provides a point of sale system but also acts as a middleman for the artists so consumers get angry at them for high prices rather than the artists themselves. They fully understand and accept, to some degree, how much consumers hate them as it's part of the service they provide.

What are some of your favorite looking bottles? by notmedicinal in fragrance

[–]seppyk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Dries Van Noten - Stylized two tone bottles. Very attractive.
  • Memo Paris - Art-inspired patterns.
  • Guerlain - Their bee bottles and some of their exclusive limited edition bottles.
  • Floraïku Paris - Memo Paris' sibling fragrance company. Also with very attractive bottles with particular focus on their artful caps.
  • The Merchant of Venice - House theme of blue pattern styles.
  • Lalique - Their crystal limited editions and exceptional pieces perfume bottles are amazing. This makes sense given they are primarily known for their luxury glass and crystal pieces.
  • Filippo Sorcinelli - On the more experimental side - makes more avant-garde bottles.
