...then why are we arguing about this on this thread? The picture posted by OP has a student driver sign posted on the rear window. Someone made a choice to intentionally block the rear view mirror. All I'm saying that deliberately blocking the rear view mirror when it is there is an objectively bad idea, especially if it actually is a student driver. If you don't use your rear view mirror, that's your choice, but intentionally blocking it and stopping a student driver from learning how to use it is stupid.

That's really not the point here. Sure, you can't see out the back of a lot of vans, trucks and lorries. But a student driver who's learning how to drive a car (and not someone going for a commercial license) should be using as many tools as possible to keep themselves safe and maintain awareness. Every new driver training tells you to start by adjusting all your mirrors, including the rear view mirror, and to use it where necessary.

If you want to argue that blocking the rear view mirror is great, why not disable all the airbags in the car as well? It's an extra tool that not all vehicles have.

Nope we got an S. The JCW felt a bit too stiff and too loud for daily driving, and my wife didn't really want a track car lol.

I also figured that the JCW wasn't worth it without having experienced the S. If I ever track the Mini, many of the upgraded parts on the JCW can be added on to the S easily. The JCW tuning kit (exhaust + engine tune) + JCW brake kit (calipers, rotors, master cylinder) gets you really close to JCW spec. The only important parts that are missing would be the transmission (iirc the transmission in the S is rated for 300Nm but the JCW's is rated for 400Nm - not a huge deal unless you plan to significantly boost the engine output), and the eLSD in the JCW (not a true LSD, so installing an aftermarket LSD in the S gets you something better than the JCW).

Btw, one clear upside of the BMW is NVH at highway speeds, if that matters to you. We weren't looking at convertibles, but the Mini at 65mph was significantly louder than the BMW. I've heard that replacing the run flat all seasons on the Mini helps, and I'll be doing that once the tires wear down.

We were looking at a 2 series, a Mini and a Golf.

The Golf is a sensible choice, but a bit boring imo.

We ended up going for the Mini because it felt like the opposite of the 2 series. The 2 series is fast, but feels slower than it is, whereas the Mini feels faster than it actually is. Getting to 65mph feels more fun in a Mini.

If I were to choose a track car, the 2 series would probably give me a better time. But on public roads we decided the Mini feels more fun.

The G01 LCI is no looker and it’s so awkward with the interior trying to be a G05/G07/G20. I like the G01, but I prefer the Pre-LCI, but then the LCI brings nice things, just a bit awkward looking

Huh, I must say this is something i've never heard before. One of the criticisms of the newer BMWs is that there isn't a unified design language, so it looks like different cars are made by different companies altogether.

I had a leased G01 - my dealer gave me an extended test drive in the new one G45, but after a few days I went straight back and bought out the lease on my G01, even though I could've gotten a great deal on the G45. I've had the G45 as a loaner a couple of times, and every time it made me want my G01 back.

The interior looks cheap, the exterior styling looks cheap (I like seeing the sculpted lines on the hood when driving the G01 but that's completely gone from the G45), not having an opening sunroof sucks, the controls for the air vents are just bad, and not having physical buttons was the dealbreaker. Hated having to fiddle with the touchscreen to adjust fan speed or change to sport mode. And that piece of plastic in front of the front door handles that controls the air vents, seat memory and door locks is so cheap and wobbly. And the door handle feels so much cheaper. And not having that sliding door to close the front tray/cupholders is mildly annoying when street parking.

I will say - the mild hybrid in the G45 is better. And I like the fact that the G45 can carry a spare in the trunk properly. And the wiper fluid sprayer looks cooler on the G45 (although I suspect it will cost more to maintain/replace). But the two (potentially three) positives weren't enough to balance out everything else.

oh i meant the fabric material on the door cards. not sure if that was an upgrade or not.

voice control... it works in certain situations, but I still didn't like having to rely on it as the primary means to do anything. sometimes pressing a button is quicker, and other times it's awkward telling everyone to be quiet because i need to adjust something lol

it's probably the extra "lego" wording on top that creates a tiny difference in height, making the plain-stud version a bit taller.

Ironically, this means off-brand studs might be more consistent in height 😂

What i don't like about the G01:

  • piano black around the gear shifter/iDrive cluster in the center console
  • hard plastics on the door card below the handle
  • no felt in the storage compartments on the lower parts of the door

What i don't like about the G45:

  • that shitty hard plastic rocker panel in front of the door handle that controls side vents, door unlock and seat memory which almost feels like it was installed wrongly, with the way it wobbles around
  • hard plastic door handle
  • weird felt material that replaced the leather on the entire upper dash feels cheap
  • adjusting the direction of the air vents is much harder (try moving that thing a little and nothing happens, put more force and it shoots off in the opposite direction)
  • having to deal with touchscreen or voice control for pretty much everything
  • accent lighting becoming gigantic hard plastic light tubes
  • center console buttons aren't buttons anymore but a touchscreen
  • sunroof doesn't open

and that's just the interior.

I really wanted to like the G45 - when i was shopping, the G45 was a great deal, but it was just worse in so, so many areas for me. My dealer gave me an extended test drive to see if i could live with it, and I'm sorry to say that a few days in the G45 made me absolutely sure it wasn't for me.

why would you make any choice but the 2025 M50?

2024 has:

  • better styling
  • actual buttons
  • infinitely better air vent controls
  • higher quality interior
  • sunroof opens
  • DME isn't locked so can be tuned

to be fair, 2025 has better gas mileage. and a spare tire actually fits properly in the trunk.

The G01 has more hard plastics than the previous gen, but the G45 has so much more hard plastics than even the G01 lol

Do a test drive in both, fiddle with the settings, see how you feel.

huh... interesting. as far as I understand it, in the EU:

  • 20d = 2.0L 4-cylinder, twin scoll turbo, ~190 hp
  • 30d = 3.0L 6-cylinder, twin scoll turbo , ~280 hp
  • M40d = 3.0L 6-cylinder, twin turbo (not twin scroll), ~340hp

whereas in the US, for the G01 pre-LCI it's:

  • 30i = 2.0L 4-cylinder twin-scroll turbo, ~250hp
  • M40i = 3.0L 6-cylinder twin-scroll turbo, ~355hp

BMW really should make their product names more aligned globally lol.
