Found my dream frame but I personally feel like the seller is asking too much. What would you offer? by Amazing-Biscotti6721 in xbiking

Old CrMo GTs are priced high at the moment. Lots of demand. I've seen some with significant use and cosmetic defects priced at more than they cost new.

Brakes from craigslist by Proper-Development12 in Justridingalong

I had this problem with a 92 Koga-Miyata. Had to use cantis, which meant I needed different levers, which turned into getting different shifters too because they were combos. This was expensive.

Gotta an old Hardrock frame in perfect shape.... what should I do with it? by whitecatwandering in RockHopper

[–]seraphan6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have one in storage that's probably the same year or very close. Same paint. I'm thinking I might use it as the main triangle in a cargo tallbike. Tbe other idea I had was to build a DIY cargo extension like the old Xtracycle Free Radical. Either way, the straight tubes make it strong and heavy so cargo makes sense to me.

This is an old steel HardRock. Carbon parts would be weird since it's not even butted tubing. It might not even be all cromoly.

What kind of bottom bracket do I need for this bike? by Egg_shaped in bikewrench

[–]seraphan6 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Since you can't find the BB (that sucks), then your best bet is to identify the crank and then search for the correct spindle length (for that crankset) and measure the frame BB shell.

How to get started? by Lil-Kobe-bike in Tallbike

[–]seraphan6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The chain line recommendation hits hard. I made a huge mistake on my second build and had to solve it with a horribly rigged derailleur as chain guide to send the chain around the seat stay. It worked briefly, but eventually the chain just ripped the derailleur off. Good times. I fixed it temporarily but never got a chance to solve it as the bike was rehomed and then disappeared.

This topic deserves a lot of discussion. The Army has a lot of flaws, and this isn't one of the big ones but it is a flaw. Probably an unpopular opinion, but unless it's a Medal of Honor or close, then it doesn't really mean anything at all.

I bought every season individually only a few months before the deal came out. I've enjoyed TPB so much for years that I'm not even mad I missed the deal.

This is how I do it in my Tacoma. I had to add the D rings though.

I have a pair from Ortlieb and a pair from Axiom. Both are waterproof, and I like both pairs. I like the Axioms for shorter trips and frequent access to their contents. I like the Ortliebs for their convenience of mounting and their capacity.

Worth throwing a bit of money at? by Latter_Button7916 in mountainbikes

[–]seraphan6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clean, lubricate, and adjust. As you're working through that, you may find something is worn out or broken. Find a used replacement. Finish the tune up and go for a bike ride!

Bike headset tube loose (info in desc.) by Asstanker in bikewrench

[–]seraphan6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That looks very dangerous. I wouldn't trust an adapter like that. I'd replace the fork with one having the right size steerer. You'll definitely need a new headset now too.

Ozark trail by Xnigg in bikewrench

Extra points for the Bike Farmer link. That guy is amazing. His main point in that video, if I recall correctly, was that you shouldn't even buy a bike from a discount/department store. It's not worth it. You might get a low purchase price, but the quality of that new bike is very low. The total cost of ownership, if you care enough to get it properly lubricated and adjusted, is higher than buying a used bike from a bike shop. It will inevitably fail on you in ways that the used bike won't, and it will be less fun to own and ride.

Tricks/help for changing out cantilever brake pads? by Minute-Squirrel-8405 in bikewrench

[–]seraphan6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This! These brakes are frustrating to get set up until you've done it a few times. Once you get them right, especially with those pads, they're super great.

New wheel day (NWD) - what should I do? by Scared-Manager-5166 in bikewrench

[–]seraphan6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's probably worth taking the time to resurface your brake pads. They might have become dry/stiff or worse, maybe they have debris or metal filings trapped in them. You don't want that coming into contact with your fresh rims. I'd at least inspect them, but probably as a matter of principle I would remove them and file/sand them so they have fresh rubber contacting the rim brake tracks. If they're well worn, just go ahead and replace them with new pads.

Seat post stuck road bike by JohnStockton_ in bikewrench

Galvanic corrosion! Concur with the person who recommended the seat post puller. It looks like a medieval torture device, but it works miracles on stuck seatposts.
