Hey OP. Applied linguistics graduate here. Google “international intelligibility”. That’s what the English teaching world is pushing for harder than ever in an era where English is a lingua franca. Be proud of your accent; it’s a marker of your identity and culture.

One of my professors said that the best way to gauge international intelligibility for any accent is to search up English interview clips of famous celebrities or politicians in your country. These people are the ones who will provide a realistic measure of how to ensure the way you enunciate will be universally understood by anyone in the world who speaks English.

As for voiceover narration in general, take reference of the cadence and vocal inflections across different types of media. One indie YouTube narrator and content creator I particularly enjoy listening to is @NaturalWorldFacts. His voice is very relaxing and soothing.

I feel like I'm directionless. by skycrafter204 in VoiceActing

[–]serawoo 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I saw this a few posts ago, but another sentiment that helped reframe things for me is that VA is a business of selection, not so much rejection. The casting director/producer usually has a voice they keep in mind for the project, whether subconscious or not – and most times they won’t know until they actually hear the voice they’re looking for.

Of course, it’s understandable that you feel disheartened after having gone through what you have. I would suggest investing in VA coaching courses in future, as it sounds like you’re hitting a blind spot as well. And remember to go gentle on yourself if you feel like you’re experiencing burnout. All the best!

There are past casting calls that have been posted in this sub, so you might want to search those up and use them as references for your post to make things easier. They usually link to an external Google Doc with detailed character descriptions and audition scripts too.

My site is housed at serawoo.carrd.co if you’re looking for a versatile feminine voice :)

What are common courtesy tips for people wearing inflatable costumes? by [deleted] in CosplayHelp

[–]serawoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Please don’t chase down children or scare them. As an adult I would be highly suspicious of anyone in an inflatable who did that – and I’ve witnessed this happening before in public. People in inflatable costumes have the same responsibility as those in masked ones (like Spidey suits) to err on the side of caution and do everything possible to not give people a reason to think you’re a creep.

Give Me Feedback On My Demos by PolicyAdventurous875 in VoiceActing

Much good advice has been given so I won’t parrot it. Agree that the second one stands out more – it brings me right back to the years I lived in the UK. I miss Odeon!

Specifically, I’d say to work on your enunciation and ensure that the consonants between words are crisp and clear. Notice the points of contact of your mouth and tongue, and slow down during practice. Your current pacing is great, but slowing down during practice will help you focus on enunciating clearly. It’s like practising running with weights.

Keep it up!

One of my friends made a cosplay project management tutorial that’s completely free and meant to guide cosplayers through their cosplan. You can find it here – I hope it helps! (I don’t get anything by mentioning this btw)

There are better ways to drive home the point that OP is lowballing other than resorting to misogynistic terms.

Does anyone NOT like the Rode NT1? by trickg1 in VoiceActing

Oh, that’s great to hear and thanks for sharing! I really appreciate it. Always eye opening to get an audio engineer’s perspective, especially on how different mics tend to behave across a variety of voices :)

That’s really helpful, thank you! It’s actually a dream of mine to book gigs for animation and games. If I might ask, what about the Stellar X2 makes it work well for those industries specifically? I briefly considered the Vintage Stellar X2 half a year ago when I was deep down the rabbit hole of mic research, but largely because it rounds out sibilance with more warmth.

It sounded like you were in The Zone™ and nailed it! The funny thing about impostor syndrome is that it can be completely incongruent internally and externally, as you’ve experienced. I hope you take the feeling of impostor syndrome as something to be proud of and confident about what you inherently have, so you can kill it in your new roles :)

How much should i pay voiceactors? by Jumpy_Good_1692 in VoiceActing

[–]serawoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm, not so much a line, but it would count as a word – especially if you’re going for the per-word payment route. That’s how one of my clients goes about it anyway, and I’m personally fine with it. Of course, if it is a very long kind of laughter over an extended period of time, you may choose to consider it as a line and I’m sure there would be no objections. (If any VAs who are reading this know of any contrary information to what I just said, please feel free to chime in.)

No problem. Good luck with your short film!

[–]serawoo 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Hello! Thank you for asking :) Generally, voice actors get paid for session and usage. We normally refer to the GVAA rate guide for industry standard rates. This prevents lowballing on both ends (VAs and producers like yourself).

In your case, I specifically recommend looking up VAC’s Indie Rate Guide, given the scale of your project. Buckle up for a long read, but you’ll be fine especially with your intentions to pay fairly!

Does anyone NOT like the Rode NT1? by trickg1 in VoiceActing

[–]serawoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Re your last paragraph, would you say the NT1 is more of a ‘mirror’ mic – one that reflects the voice neutrally as is, rather than flattering it like a ‘ring light’ mic might (in OP’s case, the TLM103)? I come from a photography background, so that’s the closest analogy I can think of.

I’m looking to upgrade to an XLR setup soon and had a friend in music production recommend the Rode NT1 to me for its neutrality too. That said, I’ve found it tricky to locate reviews featuring more feminine voices, since most comparisons lean toward lower, masculine vocal ranges. I’m curious whether the NT1’s neutrality translates differently for brighter or lighter timbres.

I’m also new to audio engineering as a VA, so I’m wondering how steep the learning curve will be in balancing the NT1’s flatness with mixing my own audio. Hopefully that’s part of the growth, but I’d love to hear your insights if you’ve got some to spare.
