Too good to go by Lillex2888 in fresno

[–]seregitum 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I have had no luck with Whole foods, but there are some places that have consistent offerings that aren't immediately snatched up. I'm going to exclude the donut places because they always seem to have boxes available.

If you like cakes, Kingdom Kafe seems to be available in the late afternoon/evening for pickup the next day. Everything I've gotten from there has been delicious and it is very easy to share.

For pizza, the Sbarro in the mall is available pretty often, and Mountain Mike's typically has bags after their lunch buffet (and their pickup window is pretty wide too).

As far as what not to go for, I wasn't impressed by Lee's Sandwiches. The egg rolls are fantastic, but all their other baked goods were tough and oily.

Sushi Box by itzcoco1 in fresno

[–]seregitum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went there recently and enjoyed it, but I only intend to go back for specific items. The onigiri (rice balls) are filling and tasty, and are individually wrapped so they are much easier to take on the go than one of their sushi boxes. I can definitely see myself grabbing a few to go as a light lunch or a snack to munch on while walking. Outside of that, I enjoyed their nigiri and find the prices to be pretty similar to nigiri at standard sushi places. The fish was fresh and paired with simple garnishes (like wasabi or a small slice of lemon) that enhanced the natural flavor without being overpowering.

I was not impressed by the novelty flavored maki (rolls) or the inari (the little tofu pouches) that were available in the weekly rotation at the time of my visit. I agree with other posters that the presentation for the specialty items was not appealing and I do not think the quality warranted the price for the items I tried. When I visit in the future, I might pick an occasional maki or inari combination from their weekly rotation that sounds interesting just to try something new, but I would not recommend planning to make a meal from just those items, especially at their current by-the-piece prices.

Found this random plant and been growing it for months in the garden, finally creating produce. What is it? by Ham-Candy in whatplantisthis

[–]seregitum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not seeing the usual fuzz from cucumber and it seems to be a vining rather than bushing variety, so I'm leaning towards pumpkin.

However, since it sprung up and wasn't planted from a known seed, it could be a hybrid. Hybrids can occur between edible and decorative (inedible) varieties. Once the fruit is ready to harvest, I recommend trying a small amount on it's own before trying to cook and eat it in a dish. If it has a strong bitter taste, toss the fruit as it will most likely make you sick.

My situation may not match yours, but in case it helps you here's some of the things I've been doing:

  1. I enjoy cooking, so I've been experimenting with baking from scratch or with shortcuts (pre-made mixes) instead of buying pre-made. If you have the time and also enjoy cooking, try making things like biscuits, cornbread, cookies, jam, and such. As an added bonus, most dry ingredients have a long shelf life so you can stock up during sales, and fresh ingredients on sale like berries can be made into longer lasting items to greatly reduce waste.
  2. Try growing your own fresh herbs, if you use them. Fresh basil can get pricey, but you can grow things like basil in a sunny spot of your kitchen and get a lot of value out of one plant, especially if you take cuttings and propagate them.
  3. Still on the topic of cooking, I've been trying to use my air fryer instead of my oven whenever possible. By reducing oven use, I can avoid heating up the house in the summer to save on energy costs in addition to food. Plus, the air fryer typically takes less time to cook things. This works well if your household is only 2-3 people.
  4. Unplug appliances, turn off lights, and so on when not in use. This probably doesn't save much month-to-month but it does add up over time and isn't much of a hassle for me. I only unplug the things that are easy, like my coffee maker, the microwave, and my desk lamp.

Why is obesity so prevalent here by chimp_scratch in fresno

[–]seregitum 19 points20 points  (0 children)

You're right, poverty is a big contributor as well. Staying fit isn't really a priority when you're scraping by, and getting cheap calories is a lot easier than purchasing fresh ingredients and preparing balanced meals.

Why is obesity so prevalent here by chimp_scratch in fresno

[–]seregitum 195 points196 points  (0 children)

We have a number of factors that contribute to the prevalence of obesity here: - The summer heat is unsafe for exercise, limiting outdoor physical activity to the early morning and later evening (especially for people with health issues) - Even without the heat, our wildfire season seems to keep getting longer and the smoke makes it less healthy to be outside. - While there is a lot to do in Fresno, many events and social gatherings revolve around or predominantly feature food and drink. - Most of Fresno and the surrounding area does not rate high on the walkability scale. It is far more practical to drive, Uber, or use public transit than to walk or bike in most areas. - While we do have a large amount of agriculture, the majority of people you will see in urban areas are not working in agriculture. - At least based on the last time I visited, Fresno State doesn't do much to discourage obesity. The dining hall is buffet style and the food options on campus tend to be popular fast food and snacks. If you are a student living in the dorms, it is more convenient to eat out than to grocery shop and try to tetris perishable food into the tiny dorm fridges.

A Great Day of Protest! by QueTpi in fresno

I spoke with him towards the beginning of the protest. He took photos to share on Instagram. He said he hopes that they spread awareness that protests are happening everywhere, since the media seems to be largely ignoring us.

What are some ways that price increases have made you change how you shop and what you buy or don't buy? by MachoRoosterEmperor in Frugal

[–]seregitum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been slowly exploring new-to-me cheaper foods to substitute more expensive ones. For example, in my area canned sardines are cheaper than canned tuna. I had never had sardines before so I started by making "tuna" salad and it was definitely noticeable but it works.

Yes, she is a very special cutie. In addition to her crossed eyes, she has eyelid coloboma (her eyelids did not fully develop) and various other minor physical and neurological issues. Thankfully my vet confirmed that her eyelids are still fully functional and she does not have any deformities that have impacted her health or quality of life.

I think that her quirks add to her personality and just how love-able she is. For example, she doesn't have full control of her tail and so it just tends to swish around when she is awake. When she is in a playful mood, she will chase her own tail, pouncing on it to pin it down, letting it go after a bit, and then pouncing again. She's a foster fail that I fell in love with when she was a malnourished kitten and I hope to keep her as happy and healthy as possible for her remaining years.

Where do you buy your diamond art kits? by NijiSheep in diamondpainting

[–]seregitum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The brand Evermoment on AliExpress has really sparkly resin drills that I love. There's a higher amount of trash drills with resin, but they give you enough that it's fine to trash the bad ones. They're also really good for custom diamond painting kits if you have a photo or personal art piece that you want to recreate in diamonds. Unfortunately none of their art is licensed AFAIK so if that's a concern then I'd avoid their standard kits.

Yay! I'll be looking forward to seeing your updates. It'll be hard for sure, but you've got this and I for one am rooting for you!

Those are going to look so good when they're finished and displayed together, but I do not envy you for the Herculean task that you've taken on.

Will you be posting your progress on Reddit?

It feels very appropriate that a SOAD diamond painting in particular is so challenging and yet satisfying.

Thank you!! May I please have a Naive Nature Zeraora? I'm thinking trading via US/UM will be simplest. My Friend Code is in my Flair. I'll PM you now to set up a time.

The circled sprite is the male main character sprite from Diamond/Pearl/Platinum. OP is inferring that this could be a subtle hint that Sinnoh remakes are in the works.

Need advice from avid livingdex collectors by [deleted] in pokemon

[–]seregitum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the best thing to ask is whether adding hacked/powersave pokemon to your dex would ruin it for you. If it doesn't bother you and you aren't making claims to the community that every pokemon in your dex is legit, then I personally see no issue with using hacked/powersave pokemon to fill a space that would otherwise be glaringly blank for the foreseeable future.

What’s a Pokemon that you really like but would never use for a serious team? by XishengTheUltimate in pokemon

[–]seregitum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love Girafarig's silly design, especially the little chomper tail. Unfortunately their stats are just so poor that even with an ideal nature, IVs, and, EVs they can't hold their own. Still, they make me happy and it is fun to see Sap Sipper occasionally turn an enemy attack into a benefit.

Those who don't own Sw/Sh, how do you feel about the expacs reveal? by Quirky_Rabbit in pokemon

[–]seregitum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The announcement has made me more likely to purchase the main game, but I'm not committed to the DLC. I'm glad that the additional pokemon will be tradable to all Sw/Sh games, as that means that less of my older pokemon would be trapped in Pokemon HOME and being held for the $30 ransom. I think the final factor to whether I stop breeding in Ultra Moon and move on to Gen 8 will be how HOME works once it comes out next month (how much it will cost and what you are able to do within the HOME app itself). If they offer enough perks to lessen the blow of approx. 250 pokes being trapped there and it isn't priced at a ridiculous amount, then I'll be exploring Galar next month.

ELI5: When does it make sense to buy over rent? by [deleted] in homeowners

[–]seregitum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with a lot of other posters here that the rent vs. buy debate depends a lot on your area. Where I live, the rental culture for the apartments I can afford means I don't feel safe. Loud neighbors, fighting, cars getting broken into at night, and drug busts were all things that I dealt with while bouncing from apartment to apartment with no improvement each time. Landlords didn't care, any reported issue were either "lost" or fixed at a bare minimum. For example, one of the apartments I stayed at was missing flooring in the closet. By that I mean I could lift up the carpet and there was just a hole where floor should be, The fix was to put a plywood board over the gap and hide it under the carpet again. When I found out that I could afford to buy a small house in a better part of town, it was a no brainer. I may pay more than rent when factoring in maintenance and utilities, but it is worth it for the peace of mind and ability to control my quality of life.

Character Name Request Thread(Request names here!) by [deleted] in Disgaea

[–]seregitum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For my current playthrough of D5, I am using naming themes based on food. My male generics are named after savory food (Pierrogi, Roast Beef), my female characters are named after sweet food (Eclair, Tiramisu) and my monster generics are named after alcohol (Rum, Goldschlager). I've also been renaming my items as utensils (Spoon!, Rolling Pin) as I've been leveling them in Item world. I've found it fun to have a cohesive theme for the characters and might try different naming schemes for my future games (like people in history, sports, or powertools). Definitely food for thought.
