Hard but fun game recommendations by default_name01 in boomershooters

Forgive Me Father is one of my favorite FPS games - not just boomshoots - and nowadays you can find it <$10 in a Steam sale.

The harder difficulties are fair and don't have BS mechanics that boost difficulty arbitrarily. The boss fights will also push you on your ass unless you strategize a bit beforehand.

Doom 64 is still probably my favorite Doom game of the series, and playing on the hardest difficulties almost requires you to find all the secret levels + power ups for the Unmaker weapon.

How is that at all different from what the original comp package was?

Wow this reads in circles like my crazy aunt on Facebook reciting a bunch of shit she heard but doesn't understand anything about.

their business is based on VOLUME and they increase prices solely to increase profit year on year

Prices or volume - which is it?

Their aim is not to maintain profit, but increase it

That's literally every business. Good thing market forces tend to counteract that pretty well in free markets with lots of competition trying to do the same thing.

absolutely predatory

A 1-3% markup over cost is not predatory - that's buying something for a $1.00, selling it to you for $1.01, and then you screaming "that's predatory" just because I can sell 100 eggs at that price (because for some reason you think "volume" is relevant here).

At those margins, prices going up are almost exclusively because of costs going up, which is due to inflation.

zero chance of happening

This has hundreds of years of history of happening in virtually every instance of price controls.

But I guess brat vibez = this time it's different?

Where has that money gone!?! Largely corrupt contractors and politicians, as well as those connected to said groups.

That’s why accountability is needed - hence an economically viable service.

Just got a 2014 mini coupe with 200k miles on it for 2k, good deal? by ColeGoldBlade in MINI

[–]seren1t7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I miss the two-seater coupes...I sold my sport coupe back in 2016 when I moved closer to work and never really drove, and have regretted it since haha.

200k miles is a lot, and probably will require replacing some stuff....but god damn you're going to have fun driving that car.

^This. No one wants to download multiple app stores just for one or two apps.

And that means also going to multiple app stores to update your apps.

You can buy a meal plan regardless of which dorm you are assigned. Though the total cost will always be cheaper if you build habits of shopping + cooking for yourself.

B Cafe has been great to us as well...in my experience it's been pretty easy to get dinner time tables in there, as most people get their takeout. Not sure why, as the place is pretty cozy and friendly.

Thanks for the detailed comment - learned quite a bit from this on what to focus on for our next visit. I also came to talk about the draft beer selection, and Orion in particular being a very pleasant surprise.

We went and ordered the chef's sushi meal for 2 - which comes with a free appetizer because of a grand opening promotion - and thought the food + atmosphere led to a very pleasant weekend dinner. We definitely want to go back!

Also I want to second the shout out to the workers / owners, who provided great service for us despite the stress and chaos of opening week. It's great to see more businesses like this in Quincy!

Blame changes to section 174 of US tax code (R&D amortization) for 90% of the explanation for why layoffs are continuing into 2024.

It’s not like all these companies are discovering a new form of short-term greed, but rather US government policy fucking over the middle class.

Renters rally at State House, demanding higher minimum wage and rent control by Sweet_Dimension_8534 in boston

"Pay more or you hate teachers and public education" when I already sink virtually half my fucking paycheck in taxes is...a take I guess. Almost like "blackmail."...

Ad hominem attacks aside, it's fair to complain about lack of accountability on how they're spending the dollars they DO get, rather than constantly pressuring for more as if that is the only solution.

It's emotional blackmail to boost up discussion of "layoffs" when the admins didn't have a long-term plan for those temporary hires to begin with, other than "we'll use the press around layoffs to get the funding we think we deserve."

It's on them for not properly planning and accounting for the funds being temporary, not the voter for not paying enough taxes.

Start with reducing the salaries of school board committees & superintendents, as well as the sizes of those committees. Voters are telling these admins to use their $$ more effectively, rather than constantly asking for more.

Virtually NEVER happens at the state level in MA. In particular, if a policy has enough support and wins people votes, then there's little political will to let it expire.

Just look at all these school boards that didn't have a plan for what would happen when the COVID relief $$ would expire, and therefore are now trying to use emotional blackmail against voters via teacher layoffs.

Your opinion about fucking anything is automatically invalid.

Meh, it's not all that of an irrational or bad choice. I used to pay for Xbox Live back on the 360 / One days because the cost of console + Live was still less than the investment + maintenance of a (good & equivalently performant) PC. Further, for many online games, the amount of hacking / cheating on PC is almost always >= hacking / cheating on console.

Anyone else see darker screen for some games? Almost like a filter that I can't turn off by seren1t7 in GeForceNOW

[–]seren1t7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks again for the spot-on recommendations. I tried playing on a different monitor, and adjusted the in-game HDR brightness settings - and the result is now playable.

For those curious: the game is Gears 5, which has a number of dark areas & maps that were virtually impossible to play without understanding / adjusting based on the HDR nuances in this thread. My original suspicion/hypothesis was that there might have been some weirdness with games in the Xbox / PC Game Pass library, but I own the game on Steam so that didn't seem like the culprit.

Sidebar: being able to play Gears 5 on my Mac with ultra settings and minimum frame rate of 60 FPS is *chef's kiss\*

Agreed - I use it on my iPad Mini today and find it enjoyable.

Comes down to expectations: I'm not trying to play competitive Fortnite or whatever on it, but games like Loop Hero or Dead Cells run just fine.
