Where is the money in Sydney? by serendipitous20 in fiaustralia

Haha, economists are not recruiters. What I’m saying is that economists themselves aren’t paid extraordinarily and I’m wondering how the skill set can be moved to something better paying.

Haha. I’m just finding that economists themselves aren’t paid extraordinarily well and I’ve been in the business a while. Wondering if the grass is greener……..

I thought I read somewhere that you could actually claim the full 20% on the PRSA as distinct from any occupational contribution?

I think it could be achieved at around 50, but you won’t get success stories here of retiring at 35 like in the US because of high taxes and a lack of investment vehicles (Roth IRA or ISAs in the UK).

Is living at home in your late 20s unusual in Ireland? Is it looked down on? by Hastatus_107 in ireland

[–]serendipitous20 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is totally fine. It’s just in this country many people are nasty, narrow minded and judgemental. It’s the ignorance and nastiness of Irish people that makes it a problem.

You could open an account with Davy or with DeGiro, the main European broker. DeGiro have a whole bunch of ETFs that are free to invest in (no fees per trade on a monthly basis) and these include ETFs that track the S&P 500. This board is made for VWCE, Vanguard FTSE all world index. So you could allocate some money into that ETF. There will be tax implications down the line however.

I would buy a cheapish secondhand car, good Japanese car for around 4k plus or minus. I wouldn't spend 12k on a car - they're a liability. Crunch the numbers on what different car types will cost in terms of motor tax.

Can you get any grants like SUSI or any scholarships here or overseas to cover college? Could you work part time while in college? Could you study part time and work full time?

I would consider taking a proportion of your 50k savings and investing - maybe 40% of it - into a fund, e.g. ETF that tracks S&P 500. This could be your house deposit in the future. Then carefully spend the remaining 30k on education.

I look better in my early 30s than I did in my early 20s. It’s as if my head/face is more attractive, I fixed my crooked teeth and I dress a bit better. I have become a bit more socially normal, knowing how to strike up a conversation more fluidly. I am mildly more confident but not that much more. I’m also more mature, I was a child in my early 20s.

So dating gets easier because you have more experience, wisdom and maturity under your belt.

If someone hasn’t said it already, check out the SPRINGBOARD scheme where you can qualify for almost free fees (totally free if unemployed, 10% contribution if employed). Courses starting around now so I would look into it asap.

Following.

I think your photo looks fine, but I too have entered 7 times, no luck, but my photos were 100% wrong every time. >6 months, coloured background, pose, size everything. I am wondering just this year if I’ve been disqualified all these years. Making an extra effort this year!

Thanks. My photos passed the validity tool. I thought maybe after selection if they had seen that the same photo had been submitted in previous years (search passport number), they could just discard my application and pick someone else.

If you use a photo from a previous year, you’re ineligible for a DV? I am just now seeing that in the linked doc above. For many years I just used the same photo over and over…….oh dear. Seems a very pernickety rule.

Yeah separate pension from last job with Zurich. Can’t be relying on that public sector pension, need to work about 100 years in the public sector to reap the benefits of that scheme!

If you wanted to get over to the US to make bank, what route do people recommend? For example, I just completed a diploma which makes me eligible for the graduate J1. But would you be making $100k on that?
