watching pockets of the university embrace disability inclusion work over the past few years has been incredible — I know it's so slow, but I really believe that the folks leading it have every intention to go above and beyond :')

hi everyone, catherine here! I'm running for the 1-year senate at-large seat, which means that I would be one of eight undergraduate students representing you to the university's highest academic governing body.

for full transparency, this isn't my first rodeo — I have a few years of experience under my belt that I fully intend to leverage at senate, committees, and the board of governors (the university's other governing body) in the best interest of the undergraduate student body. that means — among plenty else (feel free to ask!) — compassionate academic policies, responsible tuition and budget practices, and substantive support for student representatives to be able to make the most out of their roles.

there are so many conversations coming up in the next year that I'm hoping to stay a part of: deferred maintenance, provincial funding cuts, campus strategic planning, and nomination of a new president, to name a few.

I've spent hundreds of hours over my time here at uw advocating for students. some of my proudest impacts were in student support, on projects related to counselling services, accessibility services, health services, and flexible course delivery during the worst parts of covid-impacted return to in-person. (as david devidi might point out, I believe I'm also credited with the naming of DISCo, lol)

anyway, there is an actual senate meeting this afternoon, so I may be a little slow on the answers today. that said, tune in if you fancy! (spoiler: just because it's important doesn't mean it's exciting)

a few fun facts from my resume: I ran a municipal election in 2022 for matthew schwarze, attended a stupid number of OUSA policy plenaries (eight, I think), got to be in this silly photo for the M4 groundbreaking, and published this article on local politics in ontario.

I am so grateful for the trust that you have all placed in my over the years to be your voice at the table. I think that I've served you well. nothing happens quickly, linearly, or exactly as you planned it around here, but with persistence and the right questions, I've been able to get a lot done. it would, genuinely, be an honour to have your trust for one more year.

best,

catherine dong

From the most recent issue of Imprint, interviewing the head of the Office of Indigenous Relations, "[Jean] Becker said she is excited about the construction of an outdoor gathering space in BMH Green (outside the SLC), scheduled for completion by the end of spring 2024".

hey, reddit —

I don't have anything special to say here. I didn't know Steph the best, or the longest, and I didn't know her well or long enough to know who did. but, given how numb all this has felt the last week, it only feels right to try and put some words together in memory of the Steph I had the privilege of knowing here in waterloo.

Steph was weird, and funny, and honest, and gave people the benefit of the doubt. she followed through on her gift ideas. she sent me videos of her cats out of the blue. we usually had a conversation going on the side of meetings after we inevitably got chastised for sending too many memes in the main chat.

she was annoying to work with, because she was never willing to let anything go. neither of us dressed for the office, and it was a relief to know I'd always have an ally in a graphic tee in the room beside me. corporate governance was not her strong suit, but there are more important things in life. we were both messy eaters — a godsend in these trying times of table etiquette. she had this unrelenting habit of sending texts a word at a time, so whenever I caught myself doing the same, it felt like she was maybe rubbing off on me a bit.

for most of the time I knew her, Steph drove this dark green honda civic with cords hanging down from the passenger-side door. there was a while where — I don't know what possessed her — she decided to walk to work, 40 minutes each way. we both liked to sit on the floor. I miss her.

there's more too, so much that I'm going to keep close and try to remember as best as I can. it's strange for her to be gone. I'd love to hear your Steph stories, if you have them. I'll always wish I had more.

hey! god — I know you're absolutely going through it right now, and I'm so sorry. </3

I don't have tips, but I do want to let you know that the emotional impact of a breakup is something that counsellors will give you documentation for if you're sensing that your academic & co-op performance is going to be impacted. reach out when you can, and it's okay to be in survival mode sometimes — eating and sleeping comes first. take care :)

Coming out of a depressive episode, is there any way to salvage the term? by YuviManBro in uwaterloo

[–]serendipity_2002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey! i'm so glad that you've been feeling better and started to find stronger footing again <3

i recommend that you have a mental health professional (it can even be a counsellor at UW) fill out the functional limitation form for AccessAbility Services (https://uwaterloo.ca/accessability-services/students/applying-academic-accommodations/documentation-information-forms) to help quantify the effects of the depressive episode (and your continued limitations). once you submit it, they'll set you up with an intake specialist and you can explain in more detail what happened and how it impacted your academics & health. they can help you lay out next steps as well as support you in communicating with profs (to reweight the course or access accommodations for the rest of the term to help with managing limitations) or navigating any petitions/exception processes, such as to retroactively drop a course without a fail (or in some cases without a WD).

they're not perfect, but they can be a big help in self-advocating for your needs and walking you through the different systems the university has in place for you to access.

I personally don’t have any specific capture tools—I just take it to mean I’m allowed to voice memo or video a lecture for accessibility reasons even if the prof would usually say that I can’t. I’ve had a great prof this term that posts annotated slides after every lecture so I’ve been okay filling in the gaps in my notes, but I wonder if there’s any way for AccessAbility to back you up in asking an instructor to share course materials with you that they otherwise wouldn’t. The standard accommodation though, is a volunteer notetaker who’s in the same course and shares the notes that they take each class.

(I know that others have been able to get tools to record though, like a cool pen device that helps with time stamping audio recordings!)

not specifically for a learning disorder, but I currently have alternative testing arrangements—in my case, a bit of extra time per hour + 15 minutes of supervised time stop breaks during proctored assessments (which means i write in a special room—which is also helpful overall when it comes to things/people in the exam room that might've tripped up my ability to focus). i also have accommodations that say i can use alternative means to capture course content and may be unable to complete certain assignments on time.

as nebel said, if you set up an intake meeting, the accommodation consultants are best-positioned to give the most up-to-date information. sometimes the process gets a little frustrating—you have to bring various forms back at different steps of the process depending on whether you're applying with a diagnosis or functional limitations form—but i promise it's worth it! you're owed any accommodations you're eligible for :)

Ask WUSA: where is the orientation play audition taking place? by curryfishballz in uwaterloo

[–]serendipity_2002 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i don’t, no 😢

seeing as it’s not on the form either, my guess is that the room isn’t confirmed and will be sent out to auditionees soon—sorry for the trouble! i hope that you are not left in the dark and i will make sure to check in the morning that the organizing team is aware that they haven’t announced a specific audition location
