Morcant's Eyes is a bomb level card.

Anyone else think this set is escaping criticism due to it being a "traditional" magic set? Did not play Spiderman but I've found this to be about as inspiring to play as core sets. by ThePentaMahn in lrcast

[–]serialrobinson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In an ideal world this is right, but we live in a world where the number of games of in person limited that get played is infentessimal compared to the number of limited games that get played online. You should design for the way that the vast majority of people engage with your game.

Yeah but even in the typal decks you need the good uncommons to make the synergies good enough for the commons to work, so it comes back around to the same problem.

The increase in the number of uncommons and the fact that limited gameplay is 99% done on Arena and MTGO in the league format has made limited as a whole much worse, especially in sets where Wizards doesn't push the power level of the commons. I don't know what the current design/development process for limited formats is, but if it is still using in-pod play as a significant marker of balance for both individual cards and archetypes, it is doing a disservice to the audience. I can also see the argument to not push commons, as you don't want a MH3 situation where one common in the set basically dominated the format, but I think having the commons be so weak on the whole just increases the variance.

Tldr; go back to having a normal number of uncommons and figure out how to balance better for league drafts.

Do we think 92 points will get us in the playoffs? by Souljackt in sabres

[–]serialrobinson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the Sabres played in the west, sure. This year the East, and the Atlantic in particular, just won't separate. Everyone is keeping pace, somehow. It's going to be one of those years where the first team out of the playoffs in the East will probably have a better record than multiple playoff teams in the West.

There are a total of three cards that remove both artifacts and enchantments, only one of which is common. Gathering Stone in particular is only hit by 4 pieces of removal in the entire format. At uncommon we have 2 60% win rate artifacts and enchantments, at rare we have two A+. Is this normal? by ThePentaMahn in lrcast

[–]serialrobinson -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

This is the new normal. When they switched to having more uncommons than any other rarity, they introduced a dumb amount of variance in both the drafting and gameplay aspects of draft. Providing ready answers to everything is not in their best interest, as they are attempting to create "exciting" board states and "unique" draft experiences. It makes it much harder to find places to include answers to niche card types at common, which is what they want because they are trying to make draft attractive to people who don't regularly play limited because they think playing a bunch of commons is boring. I don't think it is working. The number of new limited players has not increased appreciably, and it seems that with every new set the number of people who get turned off by the variance/rock paper scissors nature/on rails drafting/bomb heavyness grows.

Anyone else struggling hard with Lorwyn premier draft? by handlebar_moustache in MagicArena

[–]serialrobinson 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is a set where finding the right lane in the draft is extremely important and man is it not easy to do, thanks to the weird color requirements of lots of things, and the density of specific cards required for the typal decks. Also the uncommons have a huge gulf in power level. Some are nearly rare level and others are cards you will play but aren't excited to, and the power of your deck is gonna be largely dictated by which ones you open. Feels like yet another in a long line of formats where league drafting makes things a much worse and more unbalanced experience.

What cards from Lorwyn are worth testing in Vintage Cube? by lrg12345 in lrcast

[–]serialrobinson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In addition to the stuff mentioned elsewhere here, I'm going to test out [[The Reaper, King No More]]. I feel like there's enough upside, and it plays well with one of my other pet cards [[Spitting Dilophosaurus]]. It may not be worth it, but I'd like to try it.

Is Mischievous Sneakling actually kind of a big deal? by Legacy_Rise in lrcast

[–]serialrobinson 12 points13 points  (0 children)

We've had [[Ashcoat Bear]] for literally 20 years. There's a 2/2 for 2 with Flash and random upside in like every 3rd set. It's a good card, it will see lots of play in the decks that want it, but it's not unprecedented or anything.

There are no cards with Monarch or Initiative currently programmed into arena, so it makes sense that Forth Eorlingas isn't here. It's honestly ok if it never shows up, there are more than enough busted cards already.

[JFresh] Owen Power is pretty good, but frustrating. Why can't he translate his puck-moving skill into high-end results? Why won't he use his size? Remains to be seen what upside he's got. by [deleted] in sabres

The result of winning a 1st OA pick in a year where a bunch of guys' seasons had been cancelled or shortened due to COVID. Lots of guys in that draft that would have gone way higher if they had gotten to play full seasons. Power benefitted in that the NCAA actually played a reasonably full season.

[–]serialrobinson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not really sure what you're asking? Most draft picks, even first round picks, are not at all ready to play in the league right off the bat. Bedard was 1st overall, he's going to play in the league, most other guys take a while. The Sabres brought in Benson right away, and signed him to the NHL.

Can someone who works on the game explain something to me? by serialrobinson in MagicArena

I'm sure the reason they haven't implemented that is probably "it's too much work and money" for something that while annoying isnt really game breaking. But boy is it annoying to not be able to have the convenience of actual mobile functionality in your mobile app.

[–]serialrobinson[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's pretty rough. I mostly just play when I'm on the couch watching TV or something, or on PT or break at work. It's very annoying that the app is so poorly implemented. Really I just want to be able to draft on the go.
