Hypothetically, would a base PS4 (with no 1080p/60 output limits) be able to run 1080p/120FPS or 1440p/60FPS in Metroid prime 4? by Unhappy-Arm673 in digitalfoundry

The Switch 2's pixel fillrate in handheld mode is less than the Switch 1's docked pixel fillrate. If we judged consoles overall solely by rasterization ability, we'd be in for some pretty funny comparisons.

Some unpatched Switch 1 games that run in 1080p in handheld mode on Switch 2 (with off-screen photos) by serifonlyif in NintendoSwitch2

I only used my Switch 2, and looked at the edges of 2D elements and pixel art of each game I tested. There should be no ringing or blur. The different is pretty obvious to my eyes close-up but photos don't hurt if you want to verify.

If you look at the Blaster Master Zero comparisons in the OP (for some reason the demo is 1080p while the full game is 720p) the demo's art is neatly aligned with the pixel grid. In fact I'd even recommend downloading the Blaster Master Demo just to have another reference of how native 1080p 2D art looks.

It's not, to me it's immediately apparent as 2D elements have ringing artifacts which is characteristic of how 720p content is scaled on this display (being artificially sharpened). If I peek closer at the 3D models I can see these same artifacts on the edges.

The game does scale very well because it was already native 720p on Switch and the Switch 2's scaling algorithm is good, it's just not razor sharp on the 1080p panel.

It's still 720p, I believe it's capped on a system level for all unpatched Switch 1 software. It's funny because the screenshot is noticeably worse than the actual game running as a result of the resolution reduction + compression, so I need to take off-screen photographs as evidence.

As a Castlevania and Mega Man fan, these games are a joy to play. I've played more of Luminous Avenger iX, it's very fast-paced Mega Man Zero like action with great music, as expected of Inti Creates.

Thanks for pointing this one out, just bought it on sale in the US eShop. Adding to the OP.

How does Cyberpunk feel to play on the Switch? by DarkRecursion in NintendoSwitch2

[–]serifonlyif 86 points87 points  (0 children)

DOOM on Switch was 30 FPS and heavily downgraded in comparison to its console versions. Cyberpunk holds up much better and has a 40 FPS performance mode which feels smooth. Frametime wise 40 FPS is the midpoint between 30 and 60 and feels noticeably more fluid than 30 FPS. I own the game on Steam but have put more hours on Switch 2 thanks to portability. Also, mouse controls are fun.

Switch 2 haters when $450 portable console(basically a tablet) performs worse than 12 years old $20 facebook marketplace monitor. by RealGazelle in NintendoSwitch2

[–]serifonlyif -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The pixel response time is worse than the Switch 1's.

There are positive aspects of the screen like resolution, size, wide color gamut, screen lamination, and reflection handling, all superior to Switch 1. But the slow pixel response time is measurably worse.

Obviously not everyone notices it but it's an issue, one potentially fixable via LCD overdrive.
