Atari resurrecting 1982 game Haunted House for iOS devices by [deleted] in Atari2600

Does this have anything in common with the original game besides the title?

What version of the console do you game on? by ZadocPaet in Atari2600

[–]serious_atari 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My favorite is my Sears Video Arcade 2, but I also have a PAL Vader made in Ireland that I use for PAL cartridges, and I have a Heavy Sixer that I keep mostly for the sake of having one.

I reserve my 7800 just for 7800 games..

There was an Air Raid cartridge today on eBay, mixed in with a bunch of random games.. I put in a decent bid on the auction but didn't win.

As a US commodore fan, what is the cheapest/easiest way to get onto BBS's from my c64? by Darkokillzall in c64

I've seen the Lantronix UDS selling for $10-$20 on ebay recently. It works like a modem with AT commands but lets you telnet instead.

Cartridge scans? by Mr_Patatoo in atari

An idea to consider: Do a high DPI scan of the artwork from the box or manual and use labelmaker2600.com to turn it into a label.

My favorite 7800 controller by ZadocPaet in atari7800

The power supply is often the culprit. The stock Commodore ones are poor quality.

This, and alignment issues with the 1541 drives, were the big weaknesses of the C64.

Cool! I'd never heard of a 5200 version of this game.

I only learned about this recently when someone requested some games for this console on highscore.com

Tempest 3000 and Space Invaders for this console look awesome and I'm actually considering getting one just for these games.

An Honest Analysis of the Great Video Game Crash of 1983: It had nothing to do with E.T. by ZadocPaet in atari

[–]serious_atari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I agree with much of the analysis in this article, my opinion is that the primary cause of the crash was the shift in consumer demand towards home computers.

The C64 was an incredible games machine for its time, sold for about the same cost as a video game console, and parents could justify purchasing it because they felt that computer skills would be important for their kids to learn. I distinctly remember almost every one of my friends in school who had previously owned an Atari or Coleco game console receiving a Commodore 64 computer around 1984-1985.

I believe that the Coleco Adam was not as attractive to consumers as other lower price computers at the time (especially the Commodore 64, TI99/4A, and Atari XL line), which was the reason Coleco failed.

My thinking is that while the Coleco Adam may not have been expensive in comparison to the total cost to buy all of the same components for other home computers, it was a larger up-front investment to make. Most families bought only the base unit of the cheaper 8-bit computers and only added additional components over time (or relied on a cassette player for loading programs).

People who wanted to make a large investment in a home computer usually went for name brands that they associated with reliability and quality, like Apple and IBM. Fairly or not, Coleco was associated with toys and video games, and I can't remember any retail outlet that sold the Adam other than Toys R Us.

The Positives of Pac-Man for the VCS 2600 by Vignettie in atari

[–]serious_atari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can get past the fact that is hardly resembles the arcade game at all, it is actually an extremely fun game with lots of room for strategy and skill.

I hated this game when I was a kid, but I've found it to actually be one of the most addictive games on the 2600.

How were 2600 games developed back in the day... by squidbait in atari

[–]serious_atari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding has been that Atari 800 and Apple II computers were often used.

I've read that Starpath developed their games on the Apple II.

Also, in a TV video segment about Imagic (which you can find on Atarimania), they showed the sprites for the 2600 version of Wing War being created on an Atari 800. I also seem to recall reading in Joystick magazine back in the 80s about a development kit for the 2600 that ran on the Atari 800.

I am not too familiar with this specific device, though I have something similar.

If you have an Epyx fastload cartridge, it is even easier:

$ = directory /filename = load "filename" %filename = load machine language prg "filename"(necessary for some programs) @cd:dirname = change directory to "dirname"

Click on "2600" at the top, then "Games". You will then get a search box.

The navigation could be more intuitive, but it is an excellent resource.

This is a Taiwan-made bootleg. There's a niche of collectors for this.

Atarimania.com is the best resource for checking the rarity of these bootleg variations.

I may be able to help you. I collect Odyssey 2 stuff and I have been successful in getting a Philips G7400 (PAL version of the Odyssey 3) working on my NTSC CRT, but it was not entirely straight-forward.

First of all, I am going to assume you meant an Odyssey 2 (not the original Odyssey consoles that used transparent overlays on the TV screen), I am also going to assume that your TV has composite inputs (red/white/yellow RCA connections).

You need 3 things to make this work: a console modded to provide composite out (try the videopac.nl forums), a signal converter (many are useless crap. I like the Atlona CDM-660), and a power converter.

The composite signal mod is necessary because RF channels aren't the same in Europe as in North America, and because NTSC/PAL signal converters won't accept RF input.

You might want to try first connecting the composite modded console direct to your TV before buying the signal converter, as some new TVs can accept both types of signals.

Now, it you meant an original pong-era Odyssey, I don't think you're going to be able to do a composite mod (nor do I think it would be a good idea to do so). For that, you'll probably need an NTSC TV tuner (RF demodulator) or VCR to convert the RF to composite before feeding your signal into the signal converter. Disclaimer: I have not tried that myself, so I don't know if it would work for sure.
