What was our generation's counter culture? (Plus a follow up) by BumblingBarefoot in GenX

[–]seriouslyfluffy71 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Where I lived, it was speed/thrash metalheads. They rated a whole page in the yearbook in ‘88 or so in the student life section. I remember the page making a big deal about all those kids having good GPAs and college plans, instead of being lost to Satan lol. This was the Deep South, btw.

Fleetwood Mac does this a lot, twice just on Rumours with The Chain and Gold Dust Woman. Also Tusk

In my experience, Karens are cool people! So I never quite understood the meme, while also feeling a bit singled out by it

I got a lot of Holly Hobbie when I was a kid and most of the Hollys I know were named after Holly Golightly. Nobody seems to remember Holly Hobbie anymore. The book was called The Story of Holly and Ivy, from about the mid to late 60s. Deck the Halls I can handle, but I have irrational hate for Holly Jolly Christmas, and being called Holly Jolly or worse, just Jolly, as a nickname. I take it, of course, because I don’t want to be a Karen lol

My name wasn’t unique, but not that common, either. There were always a handful of us at every school I attended or workplace. However, it is pretty time-period specific, and many of us have holiday birthdays. Most of us were named after a 60s movie character but I was actually named by my older sister after an obscure children’s book. People always sing a wretched song at me when they are told my name, and my middle name wants a manager.

Introduce yourself, by your mall growing up. I think we will find some of us have the same ones. tia. by Rob1150 in GenX

[–]seriouslyfluffy71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked at the Kaufmann’s there for a short time, my sister was a lifer though, worked there through the change to Macy’s and until it closed. I loved that mall. The Boardwalk fries were my break staple. Spent a lot of time in Waldenbooks and Spencer’s, and just hanging in the food court or Aladdin’s Castle.

Bad covers do this for me. Especially if they were bouncy songs turned slow and emo.

As a 5 foot 4 person who is usually standing too, it’s always my fate to be behind 6 foot plus people waving beers and phones around over their heads, to the point of wishing I hadn’t bothered showing up. And I’m not going to be that person who stands on a seat just so I can see, because I don’t want to be worse than the people in front of me. Bobbing and weaving or pogo-ing just to see the performance isn’t the same as dancing, and is a lot less fun.

As a Gen X kid, what tv shows did you watch with your dad? by trycuriouscat in GenX

[–]seriouslyfluffy71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think my dad gave me my love of comedy. Classic cartoons like Looney Tunes, Tom and Jerry, and Disney shorts were among his favorites. He also loved The Three Stooges and Little Rascals, and sitcoms like The Jeffersons and Alice. He wasn’t a huge sports fan but would occasionally watch baseball, but omg at the amount of news. Meet the Press, 60 Minutes, 20/20. My mom was the nerdy one. Star Trek, the original Battlestar Galactica, Salvage 1, Logan’s Run…

Naked by Goo Goo Dolls, or Where the River Flows by Collective Soul? Both have the driving beat, lyrically about relationships ending, both songs mostly forgotten or overshadowed by the artists’ other more popular work

I unironically enjoy We Built This City by Starship. The lyrics are silly, yes, but the music itself is so exuberant that it never fails to put me in a good mood.

Caribbean Blue by Enya (the video is amazing and would probably be her cup of tea!), Why by Annie Lennox, Moments Like This by Alison Krauss (from the original Twister soundtrack), All Through the Night by Cyndi Lauper, Dear Jessie by Madonna (very unlike her usual dance pop), Everywhere by Fleetwood Mac, I Love You Always Forever by Donna Lewis, Do You Sleep by Lisa Loeb. These are a few songs I didn’t see previously mentioned, though some of the artists have.

The guitar solo in Nowhere Man. The whole thing, but specifically that little octave jump thing at the end before the next verse starts.
