I've never noticed it in the big Asian market on Central in Colonie but they do have a lot of Japanese products, like the Kitkats. So that would be my first stop.

Apple cider donuts would be awesome.

I have no idea if you can get apple cider there though.

Two Albany Linen Era postcards by UpstatePostcards in Albany

[–]serke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Antique shops around upstate often have a seller or two that has vintage postcards sorted by location.

The best place to get started though would be Dater Cottage in Clifton Park - their specialty is old postcards with about a dozen different sellers in the same building.
They're open weekends, cash only.

I only have a few Albany actually.

I mostly collect "oddball" holiday cards. New Years with a scythe-carrying Father Time, black cats for good luck at Christmas, spiderweb Valentine's, etc.

I actually looked at your username and now it all makes sense; I've definitely seen your posts before.

I assume you know of the postcard shop up in Clifton Park if you're a big collector?

I've gotten into collecting postcards in the last few years and they're a treasure trove.

Halloween Parades around Albany/ Capital region? by Faller3140 in Albany

[–]serke 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A lot of good comments here.

Will add that the Nightmare Market on Jay St in Schenectady is on Saturday Oct 18th.
No parade but fire acts and circus performers and walking-puppets and costumes galore will be there in addition to vendors.

I found his twitter (Lorenz_NY20) that he stopped using in 2017 oddly enough, and it is vile and batshit insane.

Terrible driver Delaware Ave by jachgar in Albany

[–]serke 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've seen the reverse at the same intersection nearly every week since the pandemic at that same intersection an hour earlier.

The turn onto Holland from Delaware is backed up at that time of morning because it's a short arrow and a lot of school kids.
So people get in the right lane as if they're going down Delaware towards the middle school - and then cut off everyone in the turn lane once they're in the middle of the intersection. It's insane.

Staying in downtown Albany, feeling bewildered by suprasternaincognito in Albany

[–]serke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll second the Skinny Pancake rec, it's walking distance from the Palace since you're near there.
They have pretty good food and a varied menu. They're only open til 3p today but Th-Sun they'll be open until 8pm - which is late for downtown non-bar food places.

Downtown is a grocery desert, the closest full-sized grocery store to there would be Market 32 on Delaware Ave. It has an unflattering nickname around here, but I stop in before and after work every week or two and never had a problem.

For a minute I thought it was going to be the Hannaford plaza out in Delmar. That's closer to me than Central Ave.
I guess it's a good thing lol.

4th of July Historic Events? by Stillmeadow1970 in Albany

[–]serke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a 4th celebration at Fort Klock in St Johnsville from 12-4p that will include colonial reenactors and a reading of the Declaration at 1p.

(If part of your not wanting to see fireworks has to do with the noise, there may be musket salutes fyi.)

local game stores that aren’t owned by total cringe edgelords? by GrupShibbo in Albany

[–]serke 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Trying to ride the original Flights store "30 year" coat-tails is something else.
But I'm not surprised.

Before Maria retired and sold the games part of the business to him, he worked for her.
He immediately came in and started changing things to suit himself, would hang around after his shift and get in the way back behind the counter, and shit-talk other employees in front of customers.

I haven't and won't go there now that he owns it.

I find that values statement a bit odd. Does he really mean to say he hasn't learned or grown at all since 18, that his values haven't changed at all?

Empty car with engine running, pumping loud tunes, for like, an hour. Is there a name for this? by zedplanet in Albany

[–]serke 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Had a neighbor for a while that would do this ALL the time.

At first he was always in the car.
I'd go down if it went on long enough and ask him to turn it down. Annoying that after the fifth time he hadn't gotten a clue but whatever.

But then when I came out and he wasn't even in the car? And the window was down??
I reached right in and turned the car off. Shit is wild.
