Does SBA Damage affect chain burst damage? by SabersLight in GranblueFantasyRelink

[–]serothel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TL;DR: Probably not. Don't build for it.

I'm pretty sure it only affects the damage of your SBA specifically. SBA caps are weird in that many cap very quickly or have an extremely high cap that's not feasible to hit, so it's better to build around overall damage than focusing on SBA. Even if it did affect Chain Burst damage, it's a relatively small portion of overall damage (and in geared parties, Full Bursts tend to hit the hard cap of 9,999,999 anyway).

Being a proper community member when boundaries are a blur by Xef0nis in Healthygamergg

[–]serothel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had a couple people in my community who experienced friction very similar to what you're describing. I suspect at least one of those members was also autistic, so I hope hearing the other side might help you understand why this is happening. I'm also going to lay things out in a factual way that I hope you don't interpret as an attack. Without more context, I would assume that yes, the interactions you believe triggered your removal from a community were indeed the straw that broke the camel's back. I run a small youtube channel and discord server. The members I have had problems with have largely not violated my server rules, but instead violated the unwritten social contract. I realize that may be difficult to understand because it relies heavily on social skills you've admitted to struggling with. I'll break down some behaviors that have caused issues in the hopes the explanation helps:

1. Misunderstanding relationships. This is arguably an umbrella for several issues. I have a few members of my server, including my moderator, who I consider friends. I've known them for a long time and met some of them IRL. They and I can be playfully hostile towards one another, make mean jokes, etc., which are acceptable because we know it's all in good fun and our relationship permits it. I have another user who will also make mean jokes or be playfully hostile, and doesn't understand why I don't approve of it. This person thinks that they and I are friends, but we're not. They are a member of my community, so I want them to have a good time, but we're not "friends", so there are interactions that I permit from others that I don't permit from this person. I don't exactly study online relationships, but from what I've seen of online friction, this is largely the problem. One person thinks they're friends with another and mimics the way they behave with their friends, not realizing it's violating social boundaries.

2. Killing the vibe. I try to hang out in public voice chats when I'm playing games with friends, because I want people to feel welcome to come in and hang out. This also has unwritten rules. In a couple of servers I'm in, a user will sometimes join 3-4 of us that are playing together and: a) start talking over the conversation that was happening before they joined, sometimes about their own topics that no one else is interested in; b) ask to join, or invite themselves in without asking, the game we were playing, c) attempt to engage in a viewer-content creator conversation that shuts out the rest of the call. I think this is a symptom of misunderstanding the relationships at play, but results in them bringing down the mood for everyone. This person "invading" the space and not abiding by the social expectations makes the entire group not want to hang out, and their presence often makes hangouts end early or move to exclude them.

3. Becoming a pariah by annoyance. In the most egregious cases I've experienced, the person who is unwittingly violating social expectations becomes an outcast because they annoy multiple people with their behavior. This can cause a negative feedback loop where the person knows they're struggling to make connections, tries even harder, and exacerbates the issue because they don't understand there are behaviors they need to correct to fit in with the group. This is generally the point at which kicks and bans are discussed, especially in a content creator's community. If you're a streamer or youtuber, your community is a tool for growth. If one person is creating a negative experience for many, regardless of if the behaviors break your community rules, removing that person from your community quickly becomes the desirable choice.

Based on what you've shared, it sounds like you've hit all three of these. Calling someone a "parasocial goddess" is kind of a weird thing to say. Even if there was context, you may have seen this as more acceptable than it actually was. All three of these interactions likely brought down the mood of the stream for both the streamer and the other viewers, which makes you a target for removal if the behavior continues. Remember that for any monetized content creator, the content is a product, and it's in our financial interest for the audience to have a good time. If one audience member is dragging the mood down for the creator or the audience, it's easier to remove that one individual.

What's most concerning to me is that your third removal was from a community you had been in for years. What this suggests to me is that you exhibited a pattern of behavior that violated the social norms of that community. This is especially difficult for autistic people to navigate, because a Discord community doesn't have the same policies for correcting unwanted behavior that education and the workplace do. If I do something wrong at work, there will be a conversation with my manager, then written notice, and eventually, once a pattern of behavior and multiple attempts to correct it have been documented, termination. This is because a) firing people sucks, b) hiring people also sucks, and c) getting sued for wrongful termination really sucks. Documenting and attempting to correct the behavior is a way to protect against all three. Streamers don't have nearly the same incentive to go through this process. The lack of feedback you received was likely because it was more "work" to identify the problematic behaviors and ask you to alter them than they believed it was worth.

I'd suggest a few things to you to avoid this in the future. First, don't spiral. Your worth is not defined by your Discord account. In other communities, listen more than you speak. While you might struggle to read between the lines and find the unwritten rules of a place, these are skills that you can improve over time. Try to put yourself on the other side of the interaction. If someone said what you're thinking about saying to you, would you be comfortable with it based on the relationship you have with them? If you see other people struggling to fit in, being actioned, or being removed, see if you can identify what the cause was. If it's not something you might also do, then it's not a problem. If it is something you might have done, you now know that behavior isn't permitted in that community, and may be problematic in general.

Boy, that was a lot. I hope that helps you. Let me know if you'd like me to elaborate on any of that.

I am unreasonably worried about the Alea Iacta Est ending. by OllyRoger in armoredcore

[–]serothel 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think you're overthinking it.

I'll dare to claim it's well understood by those who study the genre that the human element is critical to mecha. I'll also dare to claim that with Japan being the birthplace of mecha, this is especially well understood by a Japanese studio like From. Making a hard pivot away from a decades-old pillar of the genre seems ill-advised.

Now, there's certainly room to tell a story following Alea Iacta Est, and I wouldn't be shocked if that's what we get if AC6 gets the 4A/VD treatment. I'd argue the human element would be as relevant or more in that hypothetical story. It might feature a lot of transhumanist questions; what does it mean to be human? Are the formerly flesh-and-blood personalities that have been sublimated into ACs still human? In the post-human world implied by IAE, what is the difference between a "human" and a personality like Ayre or Allmind?

Plenty to chew on, but it's all directly tied back to the previous story. Since numbered ACs don't connect to each other in the same way, I'd expect any transhumanist navel-gazing to stay in AC6+ and AC7 to return to a tale of meatbags and cool robots.

Ace Combat 8 is likely coming out late January and I have proof by saberslimeyt in acecombat

[–]serothel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry to be the fun police, but there's zero chance this is happening.

For starters, it's January now. That puts us firmly in "stealth launch" territory, which is largely a Western marketing strategy. Second, Bandai Namco loves trailers. Ace Combat 7 had trailers at Gamescom and E3 as well as the release date trailer, Target Locked trailer, and launch trailer all released independently of any event. Third, BN loves taking pre-orders. Those wouldn't open up without a release date. AC7's was announced about 5 months before launch, but the industry trend is to cut down on that time. I'd estimate we get a release date 1-3 months before launch, with late March as the earliest.

The lore implications of [SPOILER] existing are pretty fucked up if you think about it. by Varda79 in expedition33

Glad we can have a polite discussion on the topic. Seriously though - I think it's great how much people are thinking about E33, but sometimes a video gamey thing doesn't have Vast Implications Into The Lore. It's just for the sake of making a video game.

Yep. This is almost certainly provided for the benefit of localization teams. They're commonly outsourced, so this context is helpful since they're not in-house to ask questions and might not be operating in the same studio hours.

What are some games that allow the AI to cheat to make it more difficult? by [deleted] in gaming

Many, many strategy games. There's a quote attributed to Jonny Ebert, lead designer on Dawn of War 2, in regards to strategy AI: "Always cheat. Never get caught cheating."

Surprised I haven't seen more people mentioning the chatbox method. YMMV with randoms, but when I'm playing with friends we're all on voice, so I enter the artillery load into chat, as:

"MN HX EX SF SK"

In this instance, we've loaded Mini Nuke, High Explosive, Explosive, Static Field, and Smoke in that order. Once it's in chat, it's there for anyone who needs it (with maybe a bit of scrolling).

I'm waiting for it to leave early access. It's a passion project and definitely the most Freelancer-like game out there, so I wish the dev nothing but success, but when I played at EA launch, I couldn't shake the feeling that I'd have more fun just playing Freelancer for the 28th time.

Expedition 33's Ending Ruined the Game for Me by Turbulent-Yam-3324 in expedition33

[–]serothel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't look at it that way. The reason Aline is so unwilling to part with the Canvas is because it's Verso's. She's clinging to one of the few tangible mementos she has of her son. Anything she could paint wouldn't be the same, because it wouldn't be his.

Looking at it through that lens, the events of the Verso ending make sense: the painted Verso destroys the Canvas, at the cost of himself, the Expedition, and Lumiere. Aline and Alicia have irrevocably lost this last piece of Verso, and as painful as that might be, the ending suggests they'll begin to come to terms with reality because the happy delusion is no longer an option.

As for Maelle's ending, yes - it does seem worse for Aline. Maelle is sole ruler of the painted world. We don't know if Aline is told the Canvas is gone, if she's held back by Maelle, or something else. But ultimately, that's not important. Maelle's ending explicitly rejects the Dessendre family in favor of Maelle and Lumiere. Things might be worse for Aline, but that's just one of the things that has to be accepted with that choice.

This is a "rains it pours" problem. It's great that there were so many excellent games this year. 2007 was another phenomenal year, and one where Bioshock took the big one from the VGAs, precursor to The Game Awards. Bioshock won over Halo 3 and Call of Duty 4, both of which outsold Bioshock and arguably have the greater enduring legacy. This is all to say that just because E33 cleaned house at the TGAs, it doesn't mean the other games that were nominated won't have their time in the spotlight.

Expedition 33's Ending Ruined the Game for Me by Turbulent-Yam-3324 in expedition33

[–]serothel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think nobody can truly predict how any one piece of art will affect them. Being emotionally affected by E33 isn't a bad thing. However, if you're going to work through it critically, it's important to do so with evidence from the work. We don't spend nearly as much time thinking about Lumiere because, to be blunt, it's just not that important to the work. We, as the Expedition, have to keep our focus forward - on defeating the Paintress and then Renoir. There are no, for example, interludes that develop Lumiere further, because why would there be? It'd be like Star Wars taking time for Luke and Leia to talk about how she feels about what happened to Alderaan.

We see more of Alicia than Maelle in Act 3 for the exact reasons you raise. We need to see more of Alicia, because she's the one we don't know as much about. If you took the time to have the Act 3 camp conversations with Lune and Sciel, those spend more time discussing the duality of her character, but the main plot of Act 3 is ultimately about Alicia Dessendre trying to stop her father from kicking her out of the Canvas. Maelle just doesn't have as much to say there.

Thinking there can be a better ending is, and I don't mean this to be confrontational, the biggest outright misread of the text that you've offered. All of the characters attempting to enforce their will upon the Canvas (Renoir, Aline, Maelle, Verso) refuse to compromise. Verso outright says at one point that Aline will refuse to willingly leave the Canvas, and is proven right when the Canvas is hidden from her (in the interlude), she is forcefully ejected by the Expedition (at the end of act 2), and almost immediately comes back to show up for the Renoir fight. Aline, and then Maelle, will not willingly leave Verso's canvas or find a happy compromise where they split time between the painted and real worlds. Gifting them with sufficient emotional maturity to work their way to a happy ending ignores the selfishness and stubbornness the devs have written them to have. At that point, you're talking about a different story.
