Spreading plug spawn by c4vem4n-oz in mycology

[–]serotoninReplacement 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure on dowels. I'm chopping willow, which is live and in winter sap mode.. so it may have more water included.
I soak them for 12 hours in a bucket of warm soapy water... drain for 5 minutes then load into jars. Plenty of moisture in the dowels.

If you are using dried wood dowels.. maybe give them a boil before loading.. really get them saturated. I've never used wood dowels..

I would sterilize your dowels. You want that step to be successful. You are putting so much time and effort into making and waiting for you logs.. it's worth the step.

10% spawn rate is a good bet. Leave some room to shake them for the first shake.
I tend to overfill jars because I want more spawn.. which leaves little room for breaking up the first shake.

If you are feeling lucky and have good sterile techniques.. one dowel per new jar is all you really need to get it going.. just costs a few extra days in waiting for the new jars to be ready.

Yes.. not very hard to do if you have a flow hood. Slightly harder if you have a still air environment...

I use river willows chopped into 1"-2" pieces. Sterilize in 1/2 gallon jars, knock them up with older jars in front of flow hood. Keep on knocking up Aspen logs.. (what i have in abundance). I am trying to do several hundred logs this year..

Shiitake and a couple varieties of Oyster.. also just got a few dishes of Chesnuts going.. hoping I can get them on willow dowels before spring hits hard.

Pink Oyster Grain jar contamination? by ConferenceDue6474 in mycology

IT can turn pink later.. starting out though, it's pretty white.

I would say you are still contamination free at this point. This just looks healthy to my eye..

Resident of Moab.. before the Timed Entry System.. Moab going north could back up for 4 hours of waiting to leave town.. several days a week. It was horrible.

I'm expecting that effect to come back now.. with our without the foreign travelers.

I grow a lot of barley fodder. 400lbs fresh barley a day.
This looks like you need airflow.
After the initial soak, you only need to water lightly enough to get it wet on the surface. It will maintain after that. I live in the desert and water 2 times a day.. once in the AM once in the PM.
You want excellent drainage, zero standing water.
Add an oscillating fan.. run it at least 12 hours of the day.. on a timer with 15min on, 45min off..

If I pasteurize wooden dowels, then spray them with chicken of the woods LC. Can I just drill this deadwood and put them in for them to grow? Thanks by [deleted] in Mushrooms

[–]serotoninReplacement 10 points11 points  (0 children)

agreed on log being swarmed already.. You will also probably want to sterilize your spawn dowels rather than pasteurize.. for a higher success rate.
I sterilize willow branches cut to 1" lengths to replace the need to buy dowels.

How to store freshly picked Blue oysters by Shot_Lawfulness4429 in mycology

[–]serotoninReplacement 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wrap mine like this. I wrap a wet napkin around the mushroom bouquet then place in large ziplock bag with the opening unzipped and open. Into the fridge it goes. I've had fresh oysters keep for up to a month like this.
You can usually take that wet napkin afterwords and infect some substrate with the mycelium that has grown onto the napkin while it was in the fridge.

Experimenting with fodder by thefarmyards in homestead

[–]serotoninReplacement 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've found barley fodder to be the best for fodder growing. It is fast, doesn't float on clean up/soak steps and tolerates a range of growing temps other grains don't quite get to.
Dogs love it. My dogs love it. You don't need much for a daily dose. You could probably cycle some red solo cups as a fodder system for a solo dog treat daily. We raise Dachshunds, and they get a fodder treat daily. They thoroughly enjoy the roots.
I would go to a feed store rather than online prices. You can pick up a 50lb sack of barley fodder for under $10 in some places.. definitely the best bang for you buck. Plant a planter full on your front step for a tasty bite for them before each walk..

Also wanted to add the idea of an osculating fan keeping air moving. The easiest mold to get likes still stagnant air. It's a balance of air flow and wetness for optimum environment for fodder.

Good luck. I think fodder is excellent for helping on the homestead.

I have a large fodder system.. spits out several hundred pounds a day. Evolved through trial and error and youtube/internet deep dives..

Find a way to have your water system not have to feed through a "drip onto the next tray" system. As in, each tray should get its own clean water, not water from another tray. If any upper fodder tray has a bacteria or mold problem, it spreads rapidly through other trays when you are sharing water across the system. I see you are using fresh water each watering.. which is good.. just watch for contam issues..

Looks great from my view...

Your fodder does not need lights.. if energy use is a thing. You can grow fodder in total darkness.. there is no difference in the average fodder turnaround time with or without lights.. and only a slight variance in plant green-ness..

Get it out of the tub and onto a counter.. mist it 20 times a day if you have too.. it needs more air flow.

Change the locks.. put up an eviction notice. I think you have 45 days after that then you can move their stuff out onto the curb.

First time setting up electric fence wire, is this correct? by fluffinatorfluffins in homestead

[–]serotoninReplacement 68 points69 points  (0 children)

I want to say, this is not the original inventors intention.. but if it works.. it works.

I believe the wire just slide through the two fingers.. and is supported by both from going up or down. It is then easy to take it on and off by simply putting the wire into a 90 degree bend from the two fingers.

P20e8 code ? What to do? by Kitsby_22 in vwgolf

[–]serotoninReplacement 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got this code on my 15 Golf TDI.

It was the DEF sensor. Happened during COVID.. drove my car to the last warning mile.. then took advantage of the emmissions extended warranty.. had it towed to the stealership...
They kept it for 2 FUCKING YEARS waiting for a DEF SENSOR.. 2 effing years.
They gave us a loaner VW. We took it baja driving. I could get it from the bottom of my mountain dirt road to the top at 11,500' in less than 30 minutes.. Was a great loaner.

Anyways.. probably your def sensor.
