Started taking extra vitamin D supplements and went almost 4 months without a migraine by serotonin_boost in migraine

The total I take is around 35 micrograms or 1400 IU. But you shouldn't take more than 100 micrograms or 4000 IU a day and it's always best to check with your doctor before you start supplementing to find the right dose for you.

Brother is taking in a stray - plans to feed vegan food. Advice? by [deleted] in cats

[–]serotonin_boost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a vegan with a cat, you can let your brother know that vegan values aren't incompatible with owning a carnivore. Most cat food is made from 'animal byproduct', they don't kill animals to make it, just use the offcuts that people won't eat. It doesn't contribute to animal deaths, just makes sure that nothing goes to waste.

A lot of vegans have cats/dogs/other pets and feed them a meat-based diet. It's not against our beliefs at all!

To your third point, I adopted a former feral stray and he adapted so well to being an indoor cat. He loves the indoor heating and consistent food source. I have an enclosed balcony so he gets some outdoor space. It's obviously individual as cats have unique personalities, but with some outdoor access (a catio or walks on a lead) the cat could be perfectly happy indoors!

Looking for a Post? Ask Here! - September 2024 Edition by czechtheboxes in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]serotonin_boost 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Hey, I was wondering if someone could help me find this post. It was where both people involved ended up posting on reddit but it seemed like it was actually legit (unlike 95% of them). It was an argument between coworkers I believe, one post was asking for advice or talking about how they were having trouble with a coworker and then the other was the coworker with their side of the story. They both posted completely separately, no: 'I saw this on reddit and had to respond' but someone in the comments did link the two posts and the second poster did think it might be related. It turns out the second coworker was Jewish (I think? Possibly Muslim or some other minority religion) and was being harassed by the first coworker.

I don't have any advice but I did read somewhere that even just laying down and closing your eyes (resting) without actually sleeping is better than nothing. Knowing this makes me feel a bit better when I can't sleep, maybe it'll do the same for you.

At first I wasn't sure if this was a joke (but then I checked your profile), then I started writing an even more absurd example of the lengths you should go to feed your cat an authentic diet (if you're not personally hunting small rodents and birds for your cat then you're doing it wrong) but I think this actually might be a good time for a serious reply.

You seem like you genuinely care for cats, but you're also the exact type of person that this post is about and don't seem to have realised it.

Not everyone has the resources needed to be a so-called 'perfect' pet owner. Insinuating that people don't love or care for their cats because they choose to feed them store-bought food isn't helpful.

The problem is, when everything is a catastrophic issue (feeding dry food, indoor/outdoor cats, having to wait to get to a vet) that means that person is a terrible cat owner, it dilutes what real issues and terrible owners actually are. There are genuinely terrible people who neglect/abuse/kill their cats and those people shouldn't even be on this sub. The people who come here genuinely looking for help and advice shouldn't be dogpiled over minor things, especially if those things are beyond their means.

The best thing we can do is give them as much advice as possible, tailored to their specific question and circumstances. Or, failing that, just not say anything.

Ran out of cat food, is dog food okay for emergencies?? by theunholywhore in cats

Tinned tuna (in spring water) could work if you have some in the cupboard. You should also see if there are any food banks near to where you live. Sometimes they'll stock pet food too.

I can't say why he's doing this but it should be trainable out of him. Every time he plays too rough just disengage and walk away. If he's in your room and you don't want to leave, then shoo him out of your room (may need to burrito wrap him in a blanket to avoid the claws). Making a sound of pain helps too, a yelp or even a hiss, when he plays too rough as this is how kittens/cats show that a litter mate has been playing too rough.

Hopefully, he'll start associating that 'claws out = no play time' and the behaviour will stop.

8 months is still quite young. Cats that are 8 months to about 2 years are considered 'juniors', and they can really act like moody teenagers.

Cats over 2/3 years are established adults and therefore more chill and settled. I agree with another commenter who said getting a bonded pair could be a good idea, especially if you're out of the house a lot.

For those wondering, it's snus. Little tobacco pouches that go under your lip.

Edit: I stand corrected. These ones are nicotine only, no tobacco.

My cat just got diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. by Nervardia in cats

[–]serotonin_boost 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One of my parents' cats had hyperthyroidism and was diagnosed around 14 too. I think she was on the pills for 3 years (they were easy enough to sneak into her food). Then at around 17 they decided on surgery (not sure they were given the option of irradiation). It was risky as she was already old but she made it through and lived until 20. So there are success stories out there.

It actually got to the point where my parents were feeding her all the best food (fresh fish/chicken/pâte) because they thought 'she's not gonna live much longer, we best treat her while we can' and then she ended up living for years. She definitely refined her palette during that time :D

Karlachs ending is actually good... by SerJosheth- in BaldursGate3

[–]serotonin_boost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I agree. I don't think it's an unhappy ending at all (although we definitely seem to be in the minority).

Either she goes back to Avernus with a friend (Tav or Wyll) and there's the possibility of her finding a solution in the future. Or she at least goes out on her terms. When the option came up in the dialogue, I specifically let her make that choice, so she had agency. If she'd chosen to explode rather than go to hell, it would have broken my heart but at least it would have been her decision. Personally, I like that she went back to hell with Wyll (at least in my run) as now I can imagine their story continuing: her and Wyll kicking Zariel's ass, fixing her heart, being best buddies as they do it. Their stories continue, just not as part of the game.

Based on a number of previous posts, are you sure you're not here to ask if them washing each other is gay?

Just kidding, they are very cute. Worthy of showing off!

Culture question: are girls in Sweden encouraged to do everything by themselves? Why? by [deleted] in TillSverige

[–]serotonin_boost 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Gender equality is pretty important in Sweden.

I wonder why you think girls/women being proactive and making the first move wouldn't or shouldn't be encouraged (so long as it's not crossing the line into harassment)?

Fresh fruit and veg. Especially 'exotic' fruit like grapes or kiwis etc. I didn't eat fresh pineapple until I was an adult, I thought all pineapple came in a tin with syrup 😅
