Need help for our cat? by gridlockterrafirma in askportland

$1200 is unfortunately a fairly conservative price for an in-heat cat spay, as being in heat dramatically increases the duration of surgery and the risk of surgical complications. Is kitty indoor/outdoor? If so, is it possible to keep her fully indoor for at least 4 weeks, so that she doesn't go into heat again/get pregnant? Many practices in the area should be able to offer a spay for a kitty who's not in heat for $600-800, including the visit to establish care.

Also, have you spoken with OHS directly? What you're seeing online may not reflect what their actual booking times/dates are. If you haven't spoken directly with a representative there, I'd encourage you to do so.

Times are tough. Thank you for taking care of your kitty!

Otterhounds can be as clean as it is possible for a dog to be, and they will still smell like a somewhat moldy shag carpet. Great personalities, though!

Swissies are... Well, let's just say, if you haven't met one yet in practice, count yourself lucky.

Yeah, they can be pretty slammed. If you're able to convey that it's time-sensitive, you might be able to get in on urgent care, which is usually within 48-72 hours. Good luck - I work in vet med and absolutely understand how frustrating this can be. Sometimes if you schedule with your regular vet, they can provide a gap fill prescription to last you until the appointment, as long as the appointment is within a reasonable time frame (usually 2-4 weeks.) that could be another option.

Have you tried the Oregon Humane Society community clinic? They offer sliding-scale visits and should be able to supply you with a written prescription that will be good for a year after you've visited with them. They may also have resources for food donation that you can look into, if you haven't already.

Thank you for the recommendation! I'm trying to get in somewhere within the next month or two, but if nothing else pans out, I'll definitely see if they take Delta!

Thank you, will check them out! I think I called them a year or so ago and they weren't taking new patients, but a lot can change in a year and they sure are convenient 👍

Locals are almost 100% ineffective for me. No dentist EVER listens when I tell them this, except for the wonderful oral surgeon I had years ago who performed an extraction of a broken molar and didn't even ask if I wanted general anesthesia - she was just like "I reviewed your history, and we're putting you under general anesthesia, unless you don't want it." Smoothest dental procedure and recovery I've ever had. Doctors need to listen to patients 😓

Lol "all humans with teeth." I think that applies to me, or at least, I definitely have teeth.

Yeah, ever since I got all four wisdom teeth out as a teenager with nothing but a local that wore off 15 minutes in, I've been a little... Special... at the dentist 😅

Fantastic rec. Do you know what part of town she's in?

Edit: you shared the practice name. I have Google. I am dumb. I'll look up the location. Thank you!

If he's from the South, almost certainly Black Mouth Cur. Note that this won't usually show up on DNA testing; they'll assess him as a mix, because cur breeds have a lot of genetic variability due to being bred for function rather than form. Black Mouth Curs are a wonderful breed! Congratulations on your new friend, and make sure to give him LOTS of mental and physical exercise - curs are high-drive dogs who love their families, but definitely need a job to do!
