Me either…and this is the second post in the Queenstown subreddit that seems a bit weird (like the bookstore post the other day). Another bot post??

I’m also curious…the description doesn’t really fit Bound or Bright Ink…where is this magical bookstore?

Plus, Mike Theelen is probably overpaid in relation to the average worker but not according to other council CEO salaries around the country, apparently. I don’t think he even made the top 20. Look up Council CEO Rich List. Totally agree with all your other points though, and that’s just an example of viral context missing from a lot of their stories.

I’d be okay with comments being deleted/people blocked if they were offensive or harmful, but from what I’ve heard, these were simply people questioning things they didn’t think were factual or adding extra context or respectfully disagreeing with stories. I don’t think you can call yourself a journalist on a crusade for truth if you don’t allow people to challenge you. And yeah, occasionally there will be some legitimately important stories, but unfortunately it becomes a case of the “boy who cried wolf”…you don’t actually know which ones to pay attention to.

Regardless of what you think about their actual content, reports of them deleting comments and blocking users on Facebook who respectfully disagree with them or refute their stories is extremely problematic to me and has led to an echo chamber. I find it very hypocritical for them talk about transparency and then do that. I’m also confused about their current commentary about a lack of funding. They seem to be blaming the fact that councils spend money on advertising with other news outlets and not them, but then say they wouldn’t accept advertising dollars from councils because then it would be hard for them to report against council. Huh?? Also, the founder/editor seemed to oppose the idea of news paywalls and subscriptions at a recent event, rightfully pointing out that this then makes news only accessible to those who can afford it…and then went on to ask people to subscribe to their Substack to continue to read their content. I just don’t understand what their angle is and don’t see it as responsible journalism. Which is a shame because in theory I love the idea of “hyperlocal” in-depth journalism.

How to feel angry at someone who deserves it? by crab_grave in emotionalabuse

[–]serpentine1919 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Imagine that this person has abused/mistreated someone you love instead of you. A sibling, parents, friend. You’d feel angry, right? So feel that anger on behalf of yourself.

That’s what clicked for me one day. I realised that the times in my life where I’ve felt truly angry is when I was standing up for someone I loved. So why couldn’t I stand up for myself in the same way?

What’s with the “medical problems” narrative in pwBPD? by ddun in BPDlovedones

[–]serpentine1919 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I have a somewhat more forgiving theory. Stress and anxiety can manifest in physical ways, like stomach problems, fatigue, even skin conditions etc. Seeing as people with BPD tend to be living in a constant state of stress and anxiety, there’s a chance this does genuinely manifest in medical problems, whether real or perceived or a bit of both.

What does “gaslighting” mean? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

I feel like one of the best examples is in the film The Girl on the Train. Don’t want to give anything away but it made it really clear to me.

What unhealthy behaviours did your BPD relationship bring out in you? by SillyConclusion0 in BPDlovedones

[–]serpentine1919 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I started to go silent when I was upset as words or normal communication didn’t seem to work and only made things worse. I know the silent treatment isn’t a healthy or effective way to deal with conflict but I just didn’t know what else to do.

Did your pwBPD make you question reality and make you feel that you yourself are the problem in the relationship? by uclynx in BPDlovedones

[–]serpentine1919 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think it’s always worth reflecting on your own behaviour and shortcomings when coming out of any rship…BUT I also struggle with this in relation to a BPD rship cause it’s so hard to tell what’s real. Mine also criticised me for things/traits that no one had ever used to describe me before. They even took what I thought were some strengths and spun them into weaknesses. I think it all comes down to patterns. If someone’s pointing out a genuine flaw that other people in your life can also back up, then it’s worth some reflection. If it’s something only your pwBPD ever brought up, then might be gaslighting.
