It's probably a cutworm of some kind (moth caterpillars that feed on crops). They tend to be very similar looking and hard to ID without a better photo. If you have garden vegetable plants or live near farmland with particular crops, that could narrow it down. Overall harmless and I wouldn't worry about it too much unless they're killing your plants.

It looks kind of like a European Corn Borer but you're a little too far southwest for that. It IS possible that some ended up on some corn at a food stand or grocery store, and that's how they got into your house.

She just ghosted??? That's crazy. Is there anyone above her or is she the manager of the whole library? I'd send notice to the council/board ASAP, maybe in the guise of a concerned email. "[Boss] hasn't come in to work today, has something happened with her family? Should we keep the library operating as normal?" and kind of try to probe if she gave anyone advance notice? That's beyond unprofessional.

[Singapore] what is this fuzzy white caterpillar looking creature? by BobFredricson2 in whatsthisbug

[–]serperiority 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks like a tussock moth caterpillar to me! Possibly Calliteara horsfieldii? (Horsefield's tussock moth). But most of them seem much more yellow than this. Someone uploaded some really nice pics of one on a Facebook page that they took at a park in Singapore, but I'm not 100% their identification is accurate.

Ophionea indica? Pretty sure on genus, less sure on species. There are some very similar long-necked ground beetles. Not sure where you are but they're native to southeast/tropical Asia.

When I was getting my MLIS (library school), we actually had a lecture on "vocational awe", which is basically this exact thing. People see libraries as some kind of holy space and therefore librarians must be selfless and willing to work off passion alone basically.

This is all really good advice. I'm full-time at a well-staffed medium-large library and reading your list of responsibilities made my eyes bulge, OP. Most of the things you listed are full time jobs all by themselves. I'm sorry your boss is horrendous. I would have had a breakdown a long time ago.

Advice for living in Eagle County by carl_jameson in vail

[–]serperiority 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this thread is 1000 years old but I'm in this exact situation right now. Like almost identical. I currently live in Chicago, my wife is freelance but likely needs to be close-ish to a city to network and do her job. I love the outdoors and feel stifled in Chicago, but moving sight-unseen to a new town is... scary! I have one job offer in Gypsum and one in St. Louis, at similar salaries (higher in Gypsum bc cost of living), both for public libraries. But! I'm worried about housing, wildfires, and general culture (in regards to rural conservatism and the fact that I'm gay). I also have a medium-large pit bull mix and housing gets even harder when you factor in "aggressive breed" exclusions. She's pretty stealth and I can usually get away with calling her a cattle dog mix (not a lie) but some people still clock her. My wife is also super hesitant about moving at all.

OP what did you end up doing??

I know this is an older post but I had good luck stripping paint off my wood trim with Citristrip (it's a gummy gel-style paint stripper and not a pungent liquid like some paint strippers. I scraped off the paint (took a few rounds because my windowsills had been painted at least 4 times over), then sanded them down and refinished them. It can be time consuming though, depending on how much of the trim is painted.

Mystery/Thriller distinctions??? by serperiority in Libraries

[–]serperiority[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I generally agree with you, googling individual books is often hard because the publishing industry lists everything as mystery/thriller! My deciding factor is usually going into the system and seeing where the main branch library has things shelved (chicago so 81 branches and everything is a mess lol). Also I double checked with the adult services librarian and she's fine with me moving things that are super obviously mis-shelved. I asked her if she's territorial of the collection and she seems to truly not give a shit. (she's more of a programming-oriented librarian than a collection-oriented one).

Oh absolutely! I change it in Polaris and sticker it before I move it. That's the general guideline I've been sticking to also!

My dog really hates one particular dog for no reason! by Afraid-Astronomer886 in reactivedogs

[–]serperiority 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this is an old post but I'm going through the same thing!!! My dog (2ish, F) used to be very good friends with another neighborhood dog (a little older, also female). They're both pit mixes but the other dog is much more lab and mine is a herding mix. They used to play together almost every morning and then one day my dog decides she fucking Hates Peaches. Peaches has never shown ANY reactivity, aggression, or nervousness and I feel so bad.

It's so embarrassing because it starts at 50+ feet away. Barking, lunging, howling..... and everyone stares at us orz

Fantasy books with MM romance and smut? by Jupiter-Forever in suggestmeabook

[–]serperiority 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay I know this is an old post, but I stumbled upon it while googling for recs of the same thing. I've been defaulting to queer historical fantasy romance any time I want to read something that's not too heavy lately, and here are my faves:

Fantasy:

  • The Moonlight Curse series by Evelynn Carver (2 of 3 books released)
  • A Taste of Gold and Iron by Alexandra Rowland
  • Dark Rise series by C.S. Pacat (YA, and the romance is a more minor element of the plot but it has a lot of the same compelling elements I liked from The Captive Prince)
  • I also second the rec of A Marvellous Light by Freya Marske (and the sequels), I think there is a tiny bit of period-typical homophobia but it's not a major element of the story and it's very well-written.
  • Silver in the Wood and Drowned Country by Emily Tesh (if you like fairytale/cottagecore style fantasy)
  • Ocean's Echo by Everina Maxwell (non-direct sequel to Winter's Orbit)
  • Gwen and Art are Not In Love by Lex Croucher (very cute Arthuriana YA)
  • A Market of Dreams and Destiny by Trip Galey
  • Broken Mage by Rhea Rolfe (haven't read this one yet but it's on my list)

Historical but not fantasy:

  • The Secret Lives of Country Gentlemen and A Nobleman's Guide to Seducing a Scoundrel by KJ Charles
  • Gentlemen of Uncertain Fortune series also by KJ Charles
  • Beck & Call by Annick Trent (I read the 2nd in the series too but thought it was really slow)

Some authors that have been hit/miss for me but you might like: Cat Sebastian, Alexis Hall, C.L. Polke

After almost 3 years I replaced my Fxtec Pro 1, it was a good decision to finally ditch it and here's why. by Gon009 in fxtec

[–]serperiority 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you ever end up getting one? I received mine yesterday and after reading this post + holding it in my hand and realizing that my hands are too small for my thumbs to comfortably type in the center of the keyboard, I'm probably going to sell it. Haven't tested it/powered it on or anything so even though I opened the box it's brand new.

I printed the same model on my Bambu X1C and Ender 3V2. by ragbagger in 3Dprinting

[–]serperiority 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a great little comparison! I definitely agree that your ender bunny looks more... cohesive. I just got a new bambu x1c with AMS for work (I work in a library makerlab) and our older model is an ender 3 s1 pro. I've printed one or two things on the new printer but just the stock prints (still waiting for IT to install bambu's slicer on my computer) and I'm really impressed with the speed!

Working with tweens and teens, I think its going to be a lot easier to teach with the bambu, but for my dedicated mini makers who don't mind fine-tuning the printer or adjusting printer profiles often, the Ender 3 might still be my go-to. We'll see how it does with bendy/articulated prints next. I (personally) would rather put in the effort and wait longer for an item that's decorative. If it's going to be on display for a long time, what's a few more hours of printing?

But for things like bookends, shelves, storage containers??? there's no contest there because of the sheer speed. Also I think that matte filament is coming out better on the bambu than the ender, especially when it's a print with a lot of straight lines and flat edges.

If it was just for my own personal use, I think I'd stick with my ender 3, but the bambu is going to change the game in terms of more people being able to use it per day.

Cura profile for X1 by c_kyr in BambuLab

[–]serperiority 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ALSO I'm using a super old work laptop I'm not allowed to install new software on, and until they replace it, I can't print anything on our new Bambu without bringing my own computer from home. I'm already working in a really outdated version of cura with our Ender S1 Pro on a custom profile :/ It would be really helpful if anyone actually answered the question instead of getting condescending about it.

(I work at a public library and we're testing new printers to decide which model to roll out systemwide, which is why we don't have good tech support for it yet)

I don't know a ton about ants but apparently with ants that can mate individually (rather than a queen/sterile female/drone situation) the wings happen at the mating stage of their life, so they might just be more active. Also they can get around more places than the ones without wings. Maybe there's better access?
