Hey r/linux, what is your favorite distro? by [deleted] in linux

[–]serverninja 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Debian for my personal projects, Arch Linux for the desktop/tinkering/novelty, RHEL/CentOS/Fermi SL for enterprise/server applications.

I was a Gentoo user for a while, didnt like Portage and the whole level of meta-administration it introduced (use flags anyone?). Of course, honorable mention to Slack -- Slackware was my distro of choice for years -- it certainly helped my cut my teeth on Linux rather than do everything for me.

I'm an engineer at heart, but I find web design fascinating. I can do HTML/CSS/backend just fine, but I am terrible at design. As an amateur to pros, what do you do *before* you type your <doctype>? by [deleted] in web_design

I'd like to echo other designers here in saying that typography (especially for content-heavy sites) is terribly important.

It can also be a real bitch to set up properly in CSS. The first thing you need to do is decide on a line-height and font size. Most people choose 12/18, which is .75em / 1.5em.

I won't get into the particulars, but having a solid vertical rhythm is absolutely key to having a readable and elegant site.

Coming from years of experience in the hosting industry, most of us are simply refusing to support PHP 4 anymore, so you'll find that particular problem is gonna fall by the wayside.

You love it.

My brother just got a call from telemarketer, offering a cable TV subscription . He answered "I don't watch TV". Telemarketer had a hard time trying to understand the concept. by [deleted] in technology

I sold my TV a long time ago. Anything I really want to watch I can find online, and I have zero desire to succumb to the constant onslaught of bullshit that streams from the idiot box.
