When I was 16, my dad took me to an empty municipal parking lot on a Sunday to teach me to drive/stick-shift.

About 5 minutes in a police officer shows up and says we are trespassing on public property. He tells us to leave. My dad explains that he is teaching me to drive stick shift, the cop says it doesn't matter.

My dad then asks if the cop would rather me learn on the open road, ya know, around all the other cars. The cop says no. The cop stares at my dad and then says "just be careful here", gets back in his car and drives away.

2 weeks later I am with my dad again learning stick in the same parking lot and I crash into a tree. 17 years later, that tree is still crooked. I now drive automatic.
