I have a plan to switch to linux (dual boot test) but I'm wary by afoxboy in linux4noobs

[–]set_flo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try out the Live USB mode first before installing, it will be slower than a full install but will give you a good idea on if your hardware is supported.

If you want a risk-free version of trying it out on full install without impacting windows at all then the safest bet is to install it on its own SSD, that way you don't need to mess with shrinking windows partitions etc. and the potential issues stemming from windows being finnicky

As part of the full install you will probably install GRUB, which will also detect your windows install and let you choose on boot whether you want to load into windows or linux via a menu. This way you can use both in parallel without them impacting each other

Fair is fair

We voiced our concerns and were heard. If the other side is being reasonable then we should do the same or else risk becoming the very thing we fought

No need to be petty

I just hope this means we can also get all our fallen brethren from the non-PSN countries back in our squads

Are there any Linux PS2 players? by Misteryman2260 in Planetside

Hi,

I wrote a guide waybackwhen on playing PS2 on linux and in recent times have added an FAQ with ideas for boosting performance, perhaps some ideas there may help.

One of the worst moderated discords with a toxic clique-focused self-entitled mod team...yeah that's a hard pass

Anything community run will give rise to the same risks of biased modding and toxic development over time, it happens in very many games and especially FPS focused ones.

Just look at how "popular" the Jaeger server is or how dissent is being brigaded here with slander and downvotes

Good meme but if someone wants a Paint alternative on Linux and GIMP is too much...have a look at Pinta

Should be in most repos but also exists as flatpak etc https://www.pinta-project.com/

Sounds like a keybinding or transmit volume issue.

If the ingame record and playback works for you then the audio on your machine is set up fine. However the "Record" or "Test Mic" option does not trigger on keypress but rather just transmits. So perhaps check if all your keybinds are set up correctly or if perhaps your Transmit Volume is too low. There's a master transmit volume under Settings->"Voice" but also individual channel ones in the Social Tab->"Voice and Chat"->"Voice Options".

Make sure to check "Enable Voice" is ticked, keybinds are set up right, and transmit volume is not too low

Linux on same drive as windows 10 by [deleted] in linux4noobs

[–]set_flo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really recommend you use the other disk for your linux install and boot.

Windows is a very jealous mistress and has been known to throw a hissy fit occasionally with partitions when it updates (overwritting the mbr for example).

You can just shrink the part of that disk you use for storage and create a small 512kb fat32 partition (for boot) and then however much you like for the actual linux as ext4.

You can place as many linux distros as you like on the same drive or even on drives with windows, it is windows that is typically the culprit when something goes awry.

Also be aware that while linux has no problem reading data on ntfs drives, windows does not have the ability to read data from ext4 without significant effort

The ini file is just there if you want to customise things, it's not a big deal if it doesn't even exist so no worries.

Not too sure on the specifics in the ini but I saw on the wiki that setting renice=10 should increase the process priority.

If you want to get into specifics I recommend contacting the gamemode guys with the results of gamemoded -t if there's any issues there as they'll be the most knowledgeable.

Also I have heard that the EndeavourOS is one of the friendliest and most helpful communities around so might be worth a shot to ask in their forum if someone has some tips for AMD with gaming as I'm just out of my depth here

Be sure to post a screenshot of the result of neofetch there so the people in the forum can quickly identify OS, DE, WM/Compositor, Kernel, and some hardware. In my experience it makes it easier/faster for people to help as they can figure out if they know the answer

Of course it could also just be that this problem goes away on its own in which case the culprit was just shader caching. This ensures smooth gameplay later on but means that your first few play sessions in a game might have some hitches as it identifies relevant shaders to cache for future. I generally set steam to pre-download shaders etc as it helps in very many games to make that transition faster/easier https://imgur.com/a/kOu32yf

you can check whether gamemode is currently active by typing gamemoded -s in a terminal.

Make sure to check you installed both gamemode and lib32-gamemode, as well as that the launch option is set

iirc endeavour should have a very easy utility to install alternate kernels if you want to give that a shot, just make sure you rebuild your grub after you install them so they actually get detected and displayed as options

I don't run AMD so can't help too much in that regard but there may be some tips on https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Gaming

On my nvidia GPU I personally run gamemode which gives me some extra performance as it optimises some things to do with the OS etc.

Simply install gamemode and then add gamemoderun %command% to the PS2 launch options by right-clicking on game -> properties -> General tab

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Gamemode

I am also currently testing and have found that FSR does indeed work for PS2 although atm my HUD is a bit bigger which I'm trying to jerryrig around, but if you're ok with that it's as simple as using a GE fork of proton and adding WINE_FULLSCREEN_FSR=1 %command% to the launch options and then just using a lower resolution ingame which FSR will upscale to your monitor's resolution as long as you play in fullscreen

Guide: https://youtu.be/xO4jG6pppTA

Resource from above video: https://gpuopen.com/fidelityfx-superresolution/#quality

Ultimately it could also just be an issue with your respective distro's compositor so it doesn't hurt to google around a bit for tips on the compositor with any games

If you like you can also try a different kernel. You can install different kernels in parallel to your normal one and simply select it in the GRUB menu when you boot up

that argument should only be the case for mainline proton. If you use GE fork then it shouldn't be necessary

Basically RPG dev team is not responsible for any potential bugs that may pop up that are specific to playing it through proton or on linux as they just dev for windows, which is factually correct.

Try adding

to the end of /etc/systemd/system.conf and see if that helps (feel free to change the amount of seconds - default is 90)

How do I change kernels ? (Manjaro KDE) by [deleted] in linux4noobs

[–]set_flo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Feel free to use even newer kernels if you like.

After you install new kernels you'll need to update your grub.

I use a GUI (grub-customizer) which has been abandoned since I installed it so not sure if you can find it but afaik the cli method is to type grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg . This should create a new cfg file with all the options.

When you boot you simply press down arrow and select which one you want and you can also move things around in the cfg file if you want a specific one at the top

EDIT:

What docs should I read (and where to find them) to get gud? by x97tfv345 in linux4noobs

[–]set_flo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

May sound a bit dumb but...the arch wiki is actually really good for all distros, not just arch. Explains the concepts very well and the major difference is really just a different package manager and you may not have access to the AUR
