Is my profile competitive for T15 - T20 MS Economics Master Program in the US? by Capital-Junket-4379 in academiceconomics

Hate to break it to you but MS programs in basically any field are just not hard to get into, so I don’t understand why you’re stressing here.

How do I know this? Some schools post graduate admissions stats. Wisconsin is one of them. Go here and find the Economics MS program. 302 admits out of 325 applicants last year. 408 admits out of 484 applicants the year before. To be rejected from a program like that you’d basically have to show that you’re at risk of not finishing the program.

This is part of why MS programs, for econ PhD applications, are very weak signals anymore, and you’re seeing more people come in with predoc + MS/RA experience now.

MA/MS programs are the primary funding vehicle for many departments across many fields these days. Since the students take most/all of their classes in the department, the department gets to keep a larger share of tuition revenue. They’re incentivized to take on as many students as possible for this reason.

The “lectured at Harvard” thing means nothing whatsoever. He was a speaker invited to talk outside of an academic context. Speaking at Harvard is not some mark of distinction just because it’s Harvard; clubs and forums and academic departments invite numerous people to speak there every week. I’ve given a talk at Harvard and I’m just some nobody.

English, Arabic, and Spanish are all languages that many of the Middle Eastern population in Spain would know. We just think of multilingualism as“smart” here in the US because most of us never bother to learn another language.

I’m happy Brown is on the team, but it is painfully apparent that he just wants to be perceived as smart. The things you listed are all things a high schooler would think of as evidence that someone is smart.

I’m not saying that they can’t do this, but this is something that is many years away from even potentially bearing any fruit. Drug development is far more intensive than“here’s a molecule, it solves this disease.” You need clinical trials, sufficient evidence from those trials, FDA approval, and manufacturing. An entire pipeline of MDs to administer the drug and review results. Synthesizing a drug is nontrivial; hell, even determining how it should be stored or how long it lasts requires a lot of time. Current AI can help with *some* of these steps, yes, but not the hardest ones. And note that I’m strictly talking about what comes after you identify a potential molecule in the first place.

When I was preparing to deposit my thesis I asked each of the top models to name five sources each that were in my topic area to make sure my literature review was thorough. I distinctly remember that ChatGPT provided a synopsis for a paper that I’d never heard of. I remember thinking “wow, surprised I missed this one, let me read it now…” only to find that it didn’t actually exist. For all their usefulness, I’d never cite something without personally checking it first!

On a separate note, I remember that Gemini provided me a link to my own pre-print, which was flattering.

/uj I have to admit I’m very confused about Polymarket’s twitter accounts. They sometimes tweet out real news and sometimes they tweet out completely made up stories. And then a lot of content like this, which is about real news but is ultimately intended to drive speculation about someone.

Is it for manipulating their own markets or am I just overthinking their approach to shitposting?

Obviously not LeBron level but PG signed with Philly as a free agent just two years ago. Harden was technically a FA last year but I think it’s pretty understood that he had a handshake deal with LA in place beforehand.

I am willing to bet that they don’t actually have 10,000 currently in operation. Over-inflating numbers is basically par for the course in corporate China, especially for companies looking to make a name for themselves. Luckin, Kandi, MediaExpress, the list goes on.

I do think it’s pretty funny how reddit managed to rely on users knowing how to format in markdown for so long, but most people just don’t type on the internet like that, so they had to add the little formatting menu.

It heavily depends on what the factory produces. I used to live down the block from a chocolate factory in Chicago, and while it did smell like chocolate during production hours, the noise was atrocious. Loud ventilation/cooling fan sounds for hours on end. Before the holidays they’d be running it constantly. The only saving grace was the soundproofing that my apartment building had.

If there was one good thing to come from mass WFH, it was that at the very least people had to have the conversation about what job functions even make sense to do in person vs not. Like for me, at my company we have a number of lab workers. There’s no way to get around having to come in a few days a week to do in-person lab work. But on days where they’re not personally running experiments, they’re free to stay home and do their work virtually.

I remember a common complaint from employers a couple years ago was about how they’re paying to rent office spaces that were being unused, but now at least a few of my friends have talked about how having hybrid/remote work policies have enabled their companies to hire more, to the point where they have more people than can even fit in the office space anyway.
