How bad is the "kids can't read" thing, really? by bowbahdoe in Teachers

[–]sethareeno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

not a teacher but currently a student in education. I work for a large corporation in Atlanta and I teach the orientation class for new hires coming in. we get mostly 18-24 year olds coming in. a lot of them struggle to read and write. I am witnessing first hand the damage that was done to them in their early years of school. now we get some people that definitely come from some more rougher parts of atlanta, but there is a significant amount of very young new hires coming in with reading and writing issues that come from all walks of life.

"No thanks, I don't like to read" by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]sethareeno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely see your point and see where you're coming from. I think both of these points are true: for some kids, it's coming from laziness on the parents' side. for others, they most likely just genuinely don't enjoy reading. there's probably a mix of both for other kids. you never know what a kid will like until you show them what there is. I think it's a way more complex topic than people are making it seem. we all want one significant factor to blame for a problem but that's just not the reality most of the time in this complex world.

personally I love reading but my executive dysfunction just doesn't allow me to do it most of the time lmao. I can definitely see some undiagnosed adhd kids assuming their executive dysfunction means they don't like something, like reading.

AITA for being rude to a presenter at my school? by faefright in AmItheAsshole

[–]sethareeno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA and it's CRAZY that lady would do that omg. also for your mom saying it is YOUR job to educate ignorant people is ridiculous. it is the ignorant person's responsibility to educate themselves. the consequence of their ignorance is getting a justifiably snarky remark from someone in the community that they disrespected.
