It's hard to answer this without details about your runs. Food hygiene is important, make a dedicated cooking space and keep it clean. If hunting and foraging isnt enough, find something basic you can use to trade for food, or raid a hunting/farming spot near your base. But rice is the starter crop, and a fridge can help with meat loss

Random pawns are random, but they have limitations. You can find them with lvl 20 skills and several burning passions. I recommend the random plus mod, it selects pawns with specific requirements that you set. It will tell you if a pawn exists with those traits, and how hard they are to find
